    Siem -2 (10)

So close to a tremendous birdie putt at the 10th for Marcel Siem.

Eyeing up 37 feet, it's a cracking effort and just turns a smidge too late to drop.

    Easy par though.

  2. Clarke opens with a birdiepublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 19 July

    Clarke +5 (1)

The crowds won't fail to spot 2011 champ Darren Clarke who looks resplendent in highlighter pink.

And he's rewarded those who are watching him with an excellent birdie putt to start his round.

Up to five over for the tournament.

  3. Brown's in townpublished at 08:52 British Summer Time 19 July

    Brown -6 (11:04 BST)

Our leader Dan Brown has arrived at Royal Troon, less than 12 hours after sinking his final putt of a stunning 65 last night.

I wonder, did he manage to get any sleep?

  4. Postpublished at 08:50 British Summer Time 19 July

    Mickelson +2, D Johnson +3 (08:47 BST)

We didn't see much of Phil Mickelson yesterday but Lefty was gritting his teeth and getting on with things rather tidily.

Three over through four holes, he played the final 14 in one under par.

He's handily placed at two over for the tournament and has just teed off, alongside fellow LIV golfer Dustin Johnson (+3).

The 5 Live radio commentary team is assembling and getting their running orders for the day.

Alistair Bruce-Ball and Andrew Murray will be following Tiger Woods group from 09:25.

Kat Downes and Catriona Matthew are out with Shane Lowry's trio at 09:47, while John Murray is following Scottie Scheffler's group at 09:58.

BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter is accompanied by Graeme Storm as they track the progress of our leader Dan Brown from 11:04.

And, of course, Mark Chapman will provide the glue to hold them together!

  6. Siem bogeys the ninthpublished at 08:43 British Summer Time 19 July

    SIem -2 (9)

A momentum checker for Marcel Siem at the ninth as Royal Troon fights back.

He's been deadeye so far with his putter but rolls that eight footer for putt past the hole and has to take bogey.

Still, 32 for his first half is a sensational start.

  7. End of an erapublished at 08:39 British Summer Time 19 July

A poignant moment or two as the BBC's Garry Richardson makes his final broadcast from an Open Championship on Radio 4's Today programme.

And what a final guest for the man who has presented the sports bulletins for 43 years. He's been talking to five-time Open champion Tom Watson.

You can listen back to the interview, which started around 08:25 on BBC Sounds.

Watson recalled "some wonderful memories" at Royal Troon, where he won in 1982.

"I remember the wind being in a different direction," the American added.

"It was maybe the toughest incoming wind in championship golf."

    Stenson +5 (4)

A first birdie of the round for Henrik Stenson at the fourth after a delightful chip.

Who can forget his mesmerising final round duel with Phil Mickelson last time we can to Troon in 2016?

He won that day - but will need to find some of that form again today if he is to make the weekend.

  9. What's Woods up to?published at 08:36 British Summer Time 19 July

    Woods +8 (09:25 BST)

There was a moment on Thursday, at the third, when Tiger Woods rolled back the years and slammed home a putt from the fringe of the green.

The fist went up, the crowd went wild. The great champion was under par.

But he couldn't keep it going. By the time he reached the turn, he was four over par and it was the same on the way home.

Two years on from that emotional walk down the 18th at St Andrew's, he is very much an outsider to make the cut.

  10. While we're praising good play...published at 08:28 British Summer Time 19 July

    Jaeger +3 (14:04 BST)

My good friend Paul Higham was beyond delighted to describe this as a "Jaeger-bomb" yesterday (other brands are available).

Stephen Jaeger, who beat Scottie Scheffler in Houston to win on the PGA Tour earlier this year, probably saw this 132-yard eagle as a bonus.

  11. Absolute Siemspublished at 08:26 British Summer Time 19 July

    Siem -3 (8)

This is now turning into a serious charge up the leaderboard by Germany's Marcel Siem.

His ball never looks anywhere but in the middle of the hole from the moment it leaves his putter. A fifth birdie in eight holes.

Barely a flicker of emotion. But then a bit of a fist pump. There's a low score out there today and Siem wants it.

  12. On the Postage Stamppublished at 08:23 British Summer Time 19 July

    Siem -2, Ferguson +4 (7)

The eighth, the shortest hole on the Open roster, is playing 120 yards today and the hole is tucked over on the left of the green, around four or five paces from the 'Coffin' bunker, so named because it's where balls go to die, I assume.

Take it on at your peril.

Marcel Siem is on a hot round here and he has the confidence to fly straight at the pin. Brave. But what a shot, the ball slams on the brakes and ends up pin-high, eight-feet right.

Playing partner Ewen Ferguson trickles off into Rory McIlroy's bunker. At least he's got plenty of green to work with

  13. Dry conditions aheadpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 19 July

    BBC Weather graphic

The 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott summed it up yesterday when he said: "I was picking clubs for the first time off every tee today. I hit very different clubs than I did in any practice rounds."

Monday - Wednesday, holes one to nine played downwind.

Thursday, the breeze switched, and it flummoxed plenty of them.

We've not got much rain forecast today but expect the wind to still wreak havoc.

And it's likely to pick up later.

  14. Where's the cut line?published at 08:17 British Summer Time 19 July

    Rory McIlroyImage source, EPA

Rory McIlroy says he needs to concentrate on making the cut and then take it from there.

It's the top 70 and ties, currently standing at +3.

So he'll need an outstanding round to even get in contention to reach the weekend - and hope that others fall away.

  15. Postpublished at 08:13 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy +7 (15:10 BST)

    Media caption,

'Big problems' for McIlroy on the eighth hole

We've not mentioned Royal Troon's most infamous hole The Postage Stamp yet - Marcel Siem is about to get there and he's in our opening group.

The eighth green is a tiny speck and Rory McIlroy was close to the perfect tee shot on Thursday, only for his ball to dump itself back into the bunker.

He eventually emerged with a double bogey - and did not recover.

  16. Postpublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 19 July

    Horschel -1 (2)

While Marcel Siem sets a lightning pace up ahead, American Billy Horschel seeks to follow suit.

A really tidy opening for the eight-time PGA Tour winner as he slots in from six feet at the second for a birdie-birdie start.

He's up into the red now too.

  17. In major troublepublished at 08:07 British Summer Time 19 July

    McIlroy +7 (15:10 BST)

    Rory McIlroyImage source, PA Media

The last time we saw Rory McIlroy at a major he was leaving the car park at Pinehurst Number Two in North Carolina after blowing the US Open.

He contended well last week at the Scottish Open but Troon on Thursday gobbled him up.

Double bogeys at eight and 11 were crushing and he faces some fight to make the cut today.

More on McIlroy's "tale of woe" over here

  18. Postpublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 19 July

We should debrief on Rory McIlroy.

    I think I'm ready.

  19. Siem makes fourth birdie of daypublished at 08:02 British Summer Time 19 July

    Siem -2 (6)

Another one for Marcel Siem! He's on the charge this morning.

    Four under through six holes.

This is how you're supposed to play Royal Troon.

(It helps when the wind is playing ball).

  20. Big day for Brownpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 19 July

    -6 Brown (11:04)

    James Gregg
BBC commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds

"I used to play golf with Dan Brown, he was a junior team-mate of mine for Yorkshire.

"Leading the Open Championship for anybody is a big deal so I'm really looking forward to seeing how he gets on."
