A bogey for the defending champion Xander Schauffele after going well over the back of the 15th green with his approach shot. The par putt from about six feet slid to the left of the cup.

Following Shane Lowry's group around the front nine was an increasingly brutal battle against the elements. Thankfully, there's no sign of the wet stuff as the first hole awaits the Masters champion.

McIlroy has been waiting six years for another crack at this opening tee shot. It feels like a huge moment and that's reflected in the endless sea of wetgear-wearing fans craning their necks towards the first tee.

  5. Postpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 17 July

    Hatton E (1)

At the first green, Tyrrell Hatton is just off line with a birdie putt.

Good start from the Englishman though.

  6. Big group tees offpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 17 July

    DeChambeau, MacIntyre, Rose

Fairway for Robert MacIntyre, and Justin Rose, and just in the left rough for Bryson DeChambeau as we get going for this fascinating group.

Can Bryson finally figure out links golf? That will be interesting to see after he missed the cut here in 2019.

MacIntyre made his Open debut here and finished sixth, still his best result in the event and he arrives having gone so close to a maiden major at the US Open.

And then there's Rose, who played better than everyone bar Xander Schauffele at Troon last year and then lost that dramatic play-off to Rory McIlroy at Augusta - surely he's got a second major in him?

    Let's find out...

The Open: Rory McIlroy speaks ahead of the Open at Portrush

Rory McIlroy says winning on home soil at Royal Portrush would be "just as emotional" as his career Grand Slam-clinching Masters victory.

McIlroy became just the sixth man to win all four majors when he beat Justin Rose in a nerve-shredding play-off at Augusta in April.

The five-time major winner missed the cut when Royal Portrush staged The Open in 2019, but he regards himself as a "completely different person" and feels better equipped to navigate the intensity of the occasion.

"It would be amazing," the 36-year-old told BBC Sport NI when asked what a Portrush win would mean.

"I think it would be just as emotional, if not more emotional than Augusta - and everyone saw the mess I was after that.

  8. Rory warming uppublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy, Thomas, Fleetwood (15:10 BST)

Rory McIlroy is just warming up by hitting a few balls at the practice tees.

He will make his way to the first tee in plenty of time to get his round under way at 15:10.

The Northern Irishman is sporting a grey jumper, white cap and slightly off-white trousers.

  9. Burns stays solidpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 17 July

    Burns E, Koepka +3, Potgieter +6 (16)

Since a bogey on the ninth, Sam Burns has registered seven straight pars to remain level par for his round.

He was bang in the mix at the US Open last month before slipping away in atrocious conditions late on.

A good start from the American today as he looks to put himself contention at one of the majors again.

Some people will do anything for a bird's eye view....

Meet Cheyenne and Caine - two hawks that are working hard by keeping those chip-stealing, pesky seagulls at bay around the spectator village and 18th.

David and Joanna Trenier - a husband and wife duo who run a local falconry business - actually have four hawks that take shifts throughout the day, so you may also see Belle and Aurora about the course too.

Apparently they will also have an American bald eagle, called Elgrin, on Saturday and Sunday. Presumably in the hopes an American is leading.

  11. Par for Fitz at penultimate holepublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -4 (17)

Two holes left to navigate for co-leader Matthew Fitzpatrick and he's found the rough off the tee at 17.

His approach does at least catch the green, but even his fine putting makes a 35-footer for birdie troublesome.

Nicely judged and tickled up to the hole. He stays at four under par.

Bryson DeChambeau on the putting green

Maybe they're after Bryson DeChambeau? After all, he is one of the biggest personalities in golf.

This was him on the practice greens earlier and his group should be one of the most watchable.

Bob MacIntyre came second at the US Open last month while Justin Rose was runner-up at both the 2024 Open and the Masters.

Brian Harman, the Open champion at Hoylake two years ago, gets his first round under way at Royal Portrush.

The American left-hander puts his approach to the first on the front of the green, leaving himself a mammoth birdie putt.

Just as he was at the US Open, JJ Spaun has been absolutely lethal from that six-to-eight feet range with the putter. Another one from that distance drops for par on the 14th.

Jon Rahm goes one better with a birdie that takes him to one under for the round, while defending champion Xander Schauffele knocks in from four feet to stay level par.

  17. 'Little bit of argy-bargy with Lowry and his caddie'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry E (13)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sjane Lowry didn’t quite get the line, didn’t get the pace. Not a great effort to be fair.

We’ve just seen him and his caddie have a little bit of a set-to at the front of the green, talking about where he should have landed it. I think the caddie had a little bit of an argument back with him.

Interesting couple of seconds with a little bit of argy-bargy between them ,which can happen.

Hopefully it won’t derail his game too much.

RTE's Greg Allen has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's James Gregg about Rory McIlroy's chances this week: "When you scale the Everest of not just winning the Masters but also competing the career Grand Slam, you wake up a few weeks later after all the celebrating has slightly died down and wonder what the next mountain to climb is.

"He went through that wobble, his humour dipped, he didn’t play very well and then he came to the final round of the US Open and produced a really fine round to get a top-20 finish.

"That clicked something and he has been in flying form.

"He was signing autographs for ages yesterday. It’s vintage Rory - great to see a smile on his face. His game is back."

    Burns E, Koepka +2, Potgieter +6 (15)

Brooks Koepka is over the back of the 15th green and unable to get up and down in two. Another bogey to add to the scorecard.

  20. 'Absolutely sensational from Fitzpatrick'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -4 (16)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on 5 Live

Matthew Fitzpatrick just got the ball first and was trying to be aggressive, mis-hit it and straight in.

    That’s absolutely sensational.
