Royal Portrush junior captain Farrah Park has been playing golf since she was eight and has been looking forward to having The Open on home turf.

“It’s a really beautiful course,” she says.

But there’s one thing she’s looking forward to most.

“I’m really excited to see Rory [McIlroy], especially after his big win [at the Masters],” she says.

“It’ll be class, especially at his home ground.

"It would be great if he could play well here.”

  3. Bogey for Lowrypublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry E, Morikawa +3, Scheffler -1 (13)

Worst putt I've seen Shane Lowry make all day on 13 as his par save is well wide of the target and costs him a shot at the par three.

From free flowing on the front nine, the back nine is just looking more of a struggle for the 2019 champion, who is in danger of wasting that fine early form now.

  4. 'You wouldn't think I was a member here'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 17 July

    Clarke +4 (75)

Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke, 2011 Open winner, speaking to BBC Sport NI:

"Four over wasn't what I was hoping for. In my practice I was hitting the ball nicely, putting nicely and doing everything well, but that's golf. Today it didn't quite happen.

"On the front nine I hit shots that wouldn't make you think I was a member here. I was missing them in the wrong places and it's like 'what am I doing?'.

"Just stupid mistakes, but the chip in on 17 was a huge bonus and it was nice to do something good and positive for the day.

"I just need to play well tomorrow."

I'd wear it to play all four rounds in if I were him.

  7. Garcia going wellpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 17 July

    Garcia -2 (6)

Sergio Garcia is back in The Open after missing the last couple of years, which ended a brilliant run of 24 consecutive appearances in the tournament.

To make matters worse, he missed out agonisingly in qualifying the last two years, but this year he managed to get in via his LIV Golf ranking, and he's looking to make the most of it.

Back-to-back birdies to start two under after six will do just nicely.

  8. Fowler starts wellpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fowler -1 (6)

One of the best players of recent times who is yet to win a major?

Rickie Fowler has had three top-10 finishes at the Open, including second spot behind Rory McIlroy at Hoylake in 2014.

The American made consecutive birdies on the fourth and fifth holes to move into red numbers. There are currently 21 players under par for their opening rounds.

  9. Postpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 17 July

    Jordan -3 (68)

Matthew Jordan's round showing how he accelerated around the turn on day one at the Open

Matthew Jordan was just chugging along until he hit the turn.

Four birdies in five holes ignited his round and he dug in as the weather worsened.

Back-to-back top 10s for the Royal Liverpool golfer at the Open and he's already jostling for similar this time around.

Matthew Jordan is back in the clubhouse with a three-under par round of 68.

He has a birdie chance at the 18th but comes up just short on the green.

Jordan has earned himself a cup of tea, hot toddy or whatever else takes his fancy.

  11. 'Whole island desperate for McIlroy'published at 14:19 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fleetwood, McIlroy, Thomas (15:10 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Northern Irish actor James Nesbitt spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live a little earlier about the chances of home favourite Rory McIlroy:

“We’re so desperately hopefully for Rory. I’ve known him since he was young - he’s such a lovely man. He carries the hopes of this place so well and he understands it and it cannot be easy to do that.

"He seems to be embracing it now he’s won the career Grand Slam.

“The whole island is desperate for him.

“We’re so thrilled people are getting to see him and be here."

  12. Spaun birdies 13thpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 17 July

    Rahm E, Schauffele E, Spaun -1 (13)

The par-three 13th hasn't yielded too many birdies so far today, but JJ Spaun sends his tee shot within eight feet and his putt for a two drops.

The US Open champion is under par once more.

  13. 'Beautiful golf from Fitzpatrick'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -3 (15)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on 5 Live

    Absolutely beautiful golf.

[Matt Fitzpatrick] has hit every fairway certainly over the last hour or so and the middle of most greens.

Rory reflects on his Royal Portrush record

Just an hour to go until Rory McIlroy tees off, so we'll bring you some preview material in the build-up to that - including watching this baby-faced teenager rip up Portrush and set a new course record.

It is 20 years ago, almost to the day, since a 16-year-old McIlroy did this. Now doesn't that make you feel old!

  15. Birdie for Brookspublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 17 July

Brooks Koepka's topsy-turvy round continues - but has taken a turn for the better.

After dropping four shots in three holes around the turn, he's now registered birdies in two of the past three holes.

  16. Fitzpatrick goes closepublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -3, Fox +4, Matsuyama +4 (15)

Matthew Fitzpatrick goes within in a couple of inches of grabbing a share of the lead. A 20-foot putt from the Englishman finishes a fraction short of the hole at the 15th.

  17. 'Thoroughly enjoyed being back here'published at 14:13 British Summer Time 17 July

    Westwood -2 (69)

England's Lee Westwood speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after a fine opening round of two under par:

"It was enjoyable until the rain came down - then got testing and miserable! But I've thoroughly enjoyed being back here. Portrush remains playable even when the conditions are tough. It is a fantastically well designed golf course.

"It's as fair a links test as you can get. Fairways are fairly flat. It almost tells you where to hit it and it changes so much when conditions change.

"It's nice to not be playing indoor golf all the time and just hitting it to a yardage - it's nice to be able to use some creativity.

On his pre-Open goals: "I haven't come in with any targets - just to enjoy myself.

"I only decided to qualify three weeks ago and then did well at Dundonald having never played the course before. The reason I did that was I love Portrush and I love the Open."

  18. Bradley under parpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 17 July

    Bradley -1 (2)

Keegan Bradley opens up with a par followed by a birdie and the US Ryder Cup captain is one under through his first two holes.

  19. Pars on 12published at 14:11 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry -1, Morikawa +2, Scheffler -1 (12)

Close call for Shane Lowry who sees his 15-foot effort for birdie just run out of gas right on the edge of the hole - so just a par here on the 12th.

Scottie Scheffler matches that five after he found the bunker off the tee and then got down in two from 30 feet.
