Just on Jason Day (13:58 BST), his shoes are quite the sight too. They look like spats. Although I'm sure that's not how the young team would describe them...

You can read more about Ryan Peake's incredible story, external after BBC Sport NI's Matt Gault spoke to him about going from a former biker gang member to now playing in The Open alongside Phil Mickelson.

Despite shooting 77 today he had a real thrill playing with the six-time major champion at Portrush.

"I grabbed his putter off him a few times and had a little feel of it! That's the OG - the one from the Masters," Peake said.

"His caddy was giving out golf balls as he walked off the tee and I yelled, 'What about me?!' He had a laugh and thought I was being sarcastic but he said was I serious and I said 'deadly serious' and said could he sign a glove as well!"

Jon Rahm and defending Open champion Xander Schauffele make trips to the sand on their way down the par-five 12th. Comfortable pars for both in the end.

A fist pump from Shane Lowry as he rolls in a 20 footer to save his par on the 11th, and talk about dead weight, the ball was all out of juice when gravity took over and dragged it into the cup.

That's a battling four - and four is a great score on this hole today as again it's playing as the hardest hole on the course, with a scoring average of 4.46. It's a beast today.

Scottie Scheffler adds to that scoring average as he makes a five following a trip to some thick rough off the tee.

  8. 'I wouldn't say it was on the cards'published at 13:45 British Summer Time 17 July

Jacob Skov Olesen impressed on the course, and the current joint leader was good value off it when he spoke afterwards, too.

Is he going to go to the range this afternoon? "Not in this rain. I don't want all my clubs to be soaked tomorrow."

Did he imagine he might be first-round leader? "The way I've been playing, I wouldn't say it was on the cards. My approach game has been awful."

He's 26 now, but only relatively recently turned pro. Why? "I wasn't good enough."

  9. Birdie for Koepka on 12published at 13:45 British Summer Time 17 July

    Burns E, Koepka +2, Potgieter +6 (12)

The par-five 12th hole is playing as the easiest on the course so far today but only Brooks Koepka of this group, which has been toiling in recent holes, is able to take advantage.

Sam Burns has to settle for a par and Aldrich Potgieter cards a bogey to drop to six over for the day, but Koepka ends his personal horrendous run with a birdie to get back to two over.

Graph showing Lee Westwood's ranks on day one: Total	4 Off the tee	1 Tee to green	1 Approach	5 Around the green	16 Putting	78

What a performance from Lee Westwood today.

He has been a fixture at the top of the leaderboard all round and looking at how he ranks for strokes gained, it is not a surprise.

The best for strokes gained off the tee and on approach, it is only on the greens where the Englishman has been ropey.

    And it's not cost him.

  13. Westwood finishes with a parpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 17 July

Warm applause for Lee Westwood, despite the umbrellas, as the 52-year-old finishes up with a par at the last.

He takes his cap off after a fine two-under 69 puts him in the thick of it on day one.

Can he back it up tomorrow? Remember he did finish fourth when we were last here six years ago.

Chris Gotterup was one of the last players to secure a place at this year's Open by winning last week's Scottish Open.

He's made a solid start to his Open debut, going round in one over par.

There was just a slight blip on the back nine when the American carded three consecutive bogeys between 13 and 15, but otherwise it's been a fine round.

Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm both find trouble down the right of the par-four 11th hole. They can only hack out of the rough a little way down the fairway.

Rahm is 35 feet away for par and his attempt stops an inch to the left of the hole. So, so close.

Schauffele and JJ Spaun are in the 15-20 feet to save their respective pars but are also unable to do so.

The trio are all back to level par for the day.

    Fitzpatrick -2, Fox +4, Matsuyama +4 (12)

Matt Fitzpatrick is having a solid day. He misses a putt for a birdie at the 12th but does not seem overly fussed when he taps in to collect par.

Mickelson saves par from the bunker

Here's a bit of six-time major winner Phil Mickelson talking about his experience of playing Royal Portrush...

"I just find that it's a very rewarding course if you hit good shots and a very penalising course," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It seems to be consistent with the degree of how good or bad you hit it. Like if you hit a really good shot, it gets really rewarded.

"If you hit a really bad shot, it gets in a really bad spot, as opposed to getting away with really bad shots and getting lucky. It seems like it penalises it to the degree which it should."

Bosh. He's hit it flush down the middle.

A closing birdie would be a bonus here.
