Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

    1UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (2)

Cameron Young is first to tackle the par three and he strikes a beauty to land 16 feet away from the hole, with Justin Thomas just a little further back.

Ludvig Aberg pulls a little face after his ball drops 35 feet away and Rasmus Hojgaard can't get much closer. Europe have it all to do.

Advantage Team USA at the third.

  2. Everyone outpublished at 18:32 BST 26 September

Scoreboard with two US winning and one Europe winning

Right then, everybody is out there and those two American putts have brought a dash of red to the early afternoon scoreboard.

That's what President Trump wanted - and it's sparked a bit more enthusiasm from the previously subdued New York punters.

  3. Rahm misses big chancepublished at 18:32 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (4)

Jon Rahm sticks his second shot to 10 feet on the fourth hole - where JJ Spaun gets down in two from 60 feet away for his four.

That leaves Rahm needing to make it for the win, and he just doesn;t give it anywhere near enough so pulls up short and the hole if halved.

That's as good as a win for the USA considering. The Americans seem to have the better in-form putters out on the course right now.

  4. Young wins hole for Americapublished at 18:30 BST 26 September

    1UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (2)

Rasmus Hojgaard takes the putter and you can't say he didn't go for it as he leaves his ball five foot past the hole. Ludvig Aberg is so, so close to a stunning 28-foot putt - landing 20 inches shy before he rolls it in for par.

Now Cameron Young can win the hole... and he does just that! He sends the American fans in the crowd wild after holing his birdie putt to send the US into a one-hole lead.

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (3)

Lovely shot from Tommy Fleetwood out of the sand on the par-three third after two loose shots off the tee from from the Europeans.

It should and indeed does secure a par and halves the hole with Bryson DeChambeau sliding a long-range birdie putt right of the cup.

  6. US lead in anchor matchpublished at 18:27 BST 26 September

    1 Up Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry (1)

That just jumped forward from Rory McIlroy on the second bounce of his little pitch. Not as close as will have hoped.

Four good looks at a three here.

Lowry: Misses. McIlroy: Misses. Burns: Makes.

    US one up.

    Young/Thomas A/S Aberg/Hojgaard (1)

Rasmus Hojgaard is up first for the second shot and he lands it perfectly on the green - just 35 feet from the hole. Team-mate Ludvig Aberg drops his ball 26 feet short. Still plenty to do for Team Europe.

Time for Justin Thomas to step up and he hits an absolute peach to leave just four feet between his ball and the pin. JT is fired up and the crowd love it!

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry (18:13 BST)

Exquisite from Patrick Cantlay. Spins it back to virtual gimme length with his second.

Rory McIlroy will need to get up and down for the half.

If anyone thinks Cantlay is going to be overawed by the Irish pair, they are very wrong.

My friend and colleague has vehemently pointed out the main problem with the Ryder Cup these days.

    The clothes!

He reckons it's surely an open goal to put the US players in red and Team Europe in blue.

Instead, we get them both in shades of blue, with a dash of white.

All in a favour of a wardrobe shake-up, hit the thumbs.

The man standing next to me behind the first tee lets loose with a deep fulsome boooo as Rory McIlroy emerges onto the tee.

Could be a fun match-up this one given what happened with Rory and Patrick Cantlay’s caddie in Rome.

“He’s in your head,” sing the European fans to the tune of The Cranberries song Zombie as McIlroy’s ball pulls up just short of the green.

  11. McIlroy starts with a rocketpublished at 18:17 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay v McIlroy/Lowry (18:13 BST)

Shane Lowry up first. That's a little left, but it is unlikely to prevent Rory McIlroy to do anything other than hit this out of his boots and try to get as close to the par-four green as possible.

That was absolutely nuclear. He can putt that.

Sam Burns is in the rough short right and Patrick Cantlay is down the left of the fairway.

    Young/Thomas A/S Aberg/Hojgaard (1)

Now on to the 383 yard par-four and it's Ludvig Aberg up first. He nails his drive just 106 yards away from the green before Rasmus Hojgaard lands 28 yards behind.

Cameron Young hits a beauty for Team USA and find himself 99 yards to the hole. Justin Thomas goes last and finds the fairway, too.

    Four tasty drives, there.

  13. Postpublished at 18:15 BST 26 September

    Griffin/DeChambeau A/S Fleetwood/Rose (2)

A few groans as Bryson DeChambeau flies through the second green with his approach.

Not sure that will matter too much here as Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and crucially for the hosts, Ben Griffin, all get into around three feet with their third strokes.

BDC manages that with a deft chip from the rough to the back left of the putting surface, which isn't particularly penal at all.

  14. Europe ahead in top match!published at 18:12 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (3)

Jon Rahm and Sepp StrakaImage source, Getty Images

Jon Rahm lands one at the third - draining an 18-foot putt for his birdie, a rare one on this tough par three.

Scottie Scheffler can't answer from 12 feet so Europe stride off with a 1UP lead.

  15. Postpublished at 18:12 BST 26 September

    Young/Thomas A/S Aberg/Hojgaard (1)

Rasmus Hojgaard steps up and sinks his putt for birdie - in his first hole in the Ryder Cup! - after pars from Ludvig Aberg and Cameron Young.

Can Justin Thomas make his for the half? He nails it and a fist pump follows. He knows that was important.

  16. Postpublished at 18:08 BST 26 September

    Young/Thomas A/S Aberg/Hojgaard

Down the left side is Ludvig Aberg, just 69 yards to the pin. He finds the front of the green and the ball settles after a little hop backwards.

Now for Justin Thomas. He takes advantage of the soft green and lands just over six foot from the hole before Rasmus Hojgaard plays a near identical stroke.

Tough for Cameron Young to make any impact now as he sits 25 feet away.

  17. Match four a delicious prospectpublished at 18:06 BST 26 September

  18. Straka strikes backpublished at 18:04 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun A/S Rahm/Straka (2)

A stripe show from Sepp Straka sinks Scottie Scheffler on the second hole.

That's enough alliteration on the Austrian, who played that hole superbly and slotted in a chip from just off the green 18 feet away for his birdie to draw level in this lead-off match.

They're all important, but you feel this one could set the tone as if Europe can take out the world number one again that'll be a big blow to USA confidence.

    Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (17:57 BST)

First on the tee for Europe is Ludvig Aberg, but it is Rasmus Hojgaard - with his first shot in the Ryder Cup - who hits a stunning drive just short of the green.

Cameron Young for the US is also just shy of the green but Justin Thomas finds the rough.

It's a short pitch from there for the former US PGA champion though.

    A/S Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (1)

All four players chip in to 10 feet or less. Tommy Fleetwood holes out and Bryson DeChambeau does the same. On we'll go after Justin Rose has a little putt just to get a feel of things with his flatstick.
