Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

We definitely feel like there is a bit of momentum going for the Americans right now. We’ve not had a lot to cheer about the last few holes.

  2. Halved in fourspublished at 19:35 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (5)

Shane Lowry can't make his putt for three. But neither can slick putter Sam Burns from closer in.

Halved in fours and on the final match goes to the 6th. If this match goes the distance the 'commentary' from the crowd is going to be constant.

And Lowry is going to be staring a serious amount of people down.

This just about sums up Scottie Scheffler's Ryder Cup up until now..

BUT he's just stuck one close at the eighth, will the real Scottie show up now?

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (4)

Rory McIlroy airmailed the fifth green and had to chip it into the rough to kill his speed and get his ball to stop anywhere near the hole.

Remember Colin Montgomerie at the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills? That.

    2UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (5)

Justin Thomas tees off at the sixth and thumps it straight down the fairway in match three. Jeers and boos for Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard but the Europeans keep their composure and land pretty decent tee shots of their own.

  6. Scrappy stuffpublished at 19:29 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (7)

Tidy scrambling from Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, who both get up and down from the rough and the bunker respectively off the seventh green.

JJ Spaun then has a chance to win the hole from 20 feet away but he can't find the answer this time.

Not the best quality in this match so far with just the three birdies between them after seven holes - and the last few have been scrappy, scrambling holes with only long-range attempts to win them.

It sounds like every taxi driver from every film ever made in New York is in the crowd now.

It's loud and they are chirping pretty much constantly.

But Sugar Shane laughs off the barbs to find the middle of the fifth green.

Europe can’t buy a putt this afternoon. Allowing USA easy holes.

Shame Fitzpatrick has not been playing this afternoon play, thought he played very well.

  9. USA go two uppublished at 19:19 BST 26 September

    2UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (5)

And Rasmus Hojgaard can't find the hole from 12 feet. The USA fans go wild as Justin Thomas steps up from four feet to win the hole.

Can he do it? Yes, he can. JT is on it.

    1UP Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (5)

Bryson DeChambeau lets rip off the sixth tee and almost finds the green on the 406-yard par four.

That's greeted by huge cheers from the home fans with the American a clear 40 yards ahead of anyone else. The enthusiasm ramps up as he plays a chip and run to five feet.

Could this be another hole that goes the way of the hosts?

Tommy Fleetwood's response for Europe is a excellent wedge into nine feet.

    1UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (4)

Cameron Young could only drop 48 feet away on the green but it's a huge effort with the putter as he leaves two feet before dropping it in for par.

Ludvig Aberg couldn't find the birdie so now it's all on Rasmus Hojgaard.

  12. All square, all funpublished at 19:16 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (4)

Well, it was gimme length I'd say. I didn't mislead you.

But the Irish lads made him putt it.

Patrick Cantlay knocks it in and looks a bit bewildered - but stops short of placing his putter on the green Tom Kim-style to illustrate the tiddler nature of what he was asked to hole.

It's hard to know when to put these leaderboards in but now is as good as ever.

Bit closer this morning when Europe were runaway leaders throughout.

    1UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (4)

Rasmus Hojgaard goes two better than his team-mate as Team Europe look to keep Team USA in their sights in this third match.

    Now for the putters...

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (3)

Nice pitch to five feet from Sam Burns. Birdie chance.

Long putt for Patrick Cantlay and he lags that beautifully to likely gimme length.

Rory McIlroy has a similarly lengthy putt and he makes a superb job of that. Four.

    1UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (4)

Ludvig Aberg looks to track down Justin Thomas and he lands his ball 11 feet shy. Chance for a half, though.

  17. Europe still ahead in top matchpublished at 19:11 BST 26 September

    Scheffler/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (6)

    Ryder CupImage source, Getty Images

JJ Spaun is obviously a much better putter from 30 feet than he is from 12, as it's a woeful effort from the US Open champion to try and win the sixth hole for the Americans.

This European pair, who look a bit more like a couple of nightclub bouncers than golfers, remain in the lead.

  18. What a shot!published at 19:11 BST 26 September

    1UP Young/Thomas v Aberg/Hojgaard (4)

Justin Thomas goes through his practice swings before lining up his second shot from the rough and what a ridiculously good hit that is! Over the trees and four feet from the hole.

    Shot!

  19. Postpublished at 19:07 BST 26 September

    Burns/Cantlay A/S McIlroy/Lowry (3)

Sam Burns smites his second on the par-five fourth to the edge of the green and Patrick Cantlay, knowing his partner is in good shape, flies his to the back of the green.

    Over to you, Europe.

Rory McIlroy says 'no problem' and arrows his iron from the left rough over the pin and safely onto the dance floor.

  20. 'Bryson's ready to play'published at 19:06 BST 26 September

    1UP Griffin/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose (5)

    Shaun Micheel
2003 US PGA Championship winner on BBC Radio 5 live

We sure needed like that. That’s the first roar I’ve heard since I’ve been out here covering these great matches.

What a great putt by Bryson. He’s settled down, he’s ready to play.
