    Morikawa -12 (17*)

A frustrated swish of the club from Collin Morikawa as his effort comes up way short.

It'll be 15 feet to save par.

  2. Detry finishes with superb eaglepublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 17 May

    Detry -9 (67)

Thomas Detry take a bow. The Belgian zips his approach shot into eight feet from 225 yards on the par-five 18th.

And then cooly slots his eagle putt to move into a tie for third as he heads into the clubhouse.

    Morikawa -12 (17*)

Can Collin Morikawa make it six in a row to close his round?

He eyes up the ninth green from the middle of the fairway but he's just hung it short and there's a devious slope waiting to drag his ball backwards off the green.

He'll have to chip that in if he wants to nick another shot.

  4. Par startpublished at 19:56 British Summer Time 17 May

    Aberg +1, Schauffele -9, Thomas -2 (1)

A comfortable par start for Xander Schauffele, with a promising lag putt that showed he's already got the speed of these greens figured out.

  5. Postpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 17 May

    Clark +1, Harman -1, Scheffler -8 (15*)

A rare bad one rom Scottie Scheffler at the seventh as he sprays a shot miles wide right and into the crowd, but it's a par five and that's only his second so he has shots in hand on this hole.

  6. Schauffele underwaypublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 17 May

    Aberg +1, Schauffele -9, Thomas -2

Our overnight leader is underway with Xander Schauffele teeing off along with local hero Justin Thomas and Swedish sensation Ludvig Aberg.

Schauffele's had a long time to think about what he did yesterday, and he finds himself now chasing. Interesting dynamic.

  7. Postpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 17 May

    Rahm E (16*)

Par fives ought to be meat and drink for Jon Rahm on this expansive course but he's let an opportunity slip on the seventh (his 16th).

He was on the green in two but three-putted from 19 feet and comes out only with a par.

Holes running out for the Spaniard.

  8. Morikawa bags another birdiepublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 17 May

    Morikawa -12 (17*)

    No stopping Collin Morikawa!

FIve birdies in a row for the Californian who has lengthened his stride on the back nine and wrested control of this tournament.

Penny for the thoughts of Xander Schauffele who is just getting his second round going.

  9. Schauffele sets record pacepublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 17 May

    Schauffele -9 (19:38 BST)

Xander Schauffele sets the pace with a major record-equalling 62 to sit on nine under and three shots in front.

Amazingly, Schauffele also shot 62 at last year's US Open, but this time he hopes to stay in front and win a major maiden title.

The American holed nine birdies in a sensational bogey-free round to lead by three at Valhalla."I think not winning makes you want to win more, as weird as that is," Schauffele added.

"For me, at least, I react to it, and I want it more and more and more."

  10. Hubbard bounces back in stylepublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 17 May

    Hubbard -10 (13*)

Oh my word. Mark Hubbard is showing the bouncebackability of a player way higher up in the world rankings. Certainly not one that has never won on the PGA Tour and whose best career ranking is 66th.

He follows his bogey on the second with a lovely shot off the tee on the third to 10 feet before sinking the putt.

And not content with that lofts a superb wedge into nine feet on the fourth before draining another birdie putt.

  11. Postpublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 17 May

    Clark +1, Harman -1, Scheffler -8 (15*)

Is Scottie Scheffler human? I'm not too sure, his consistency is just incredible, especially with everything that's gone on today.

He's produced another tidy chip, still leaving three feet but there's not a hint of his concentration lapsing as he knocks it in for par. Three to go.

  12. Who's still to come?published at 19:37 British Summer Time 17 May

Some of the groups still to head out and potentially provide some sparkle in the gloom and rain this evening... the 'sunset' in Kentucky is around 21:00 local (02:00 BST) so there's a good chance a few groups won't get finished up tonight. All the times below are BST.

    From hole one:

19:38 Ludvig Aberg (Swe), Xander Schauffele (US), Justin Thomas (US)

19:49 Keegan Bradley (US), Adam Scott (Aus), Tiger Woods (US)

20:00 Dustin Johnson (US), Rory McIlroy (NI), Justin Rose (Eng)

20:11 Viktor Hovland (Nor), Hideki Matsuyama (Jpn), Cameron Smith (Aus)

20:22 Max Homa (US), Brooks Koepka (US), Jordan Spieth (US)

20:33 Tony Finau (US), Tyrrell Hatton (Eng), Sahith Theegala (US)

    Morkawa -11 (16*)

Oh give over Collin. Morikawa moves on to the 190-yard par-three eighth and lasers another pin-seeker of an iron. He's left himself another five-footer. He's probably wishing he had another nine holes to play.

  14. Morikawa extends leadpublished at 19:33 British Summer Time 17 May

    Morikawa -11 (16*)

A familiar shake of the upper body as Collin Morikawa settles in over his putt. And he takes a stride towards the hole as the ball drops in for a fourth birdie in four holes.

Tremendous run by the two-time major champion and there's suddenly a bit of daylight between him and the chasing pack.

  15. Noren bounces back on the 18thpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 17 May

    Noren -5 (70)

Bogeys on the 14th, 16th and 17th have ruined Alex Noren's card and probably his day a little but the Swede bounces back with a birdie on the 18th - the reward for a superb little chip and run off the downslope on the left of the apron.

  16. Postpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 17 May

    Morikawa -10 (15*)

The rain was forecast to come in a little heavier around this time of day, but the umbrellas have been put away. This could be good news for the later starters who won't have to contend with damp clubs.

Collin Morikawa, meanwhile, left himself 94 yards to the pin for his third shot on the par-five seventh. And that's a great number for the Californian, who flicks a wedge straight at the flag, the ball thudding onto the green and stopping five feet from the hole.

A fourth successive birdie coming up?

  17. Postpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 17 May

    Morikawa -10 (15*)

Collin Morikawa is just off the edge of the right side of the seventh fairway, He can't reach the green on this par-five hole in two so hits a lay-up back into the fairway.

How far ahead of Xander Schauffele can he get before the overnight leader tees off?

  19. Close!published at 19:14 British Summer Time 17 May

    Clark E, Harman -2, Scheffler -8 (14*)

Scottie Scheffler's just so, so good with the wedge, either full shots up chips like this one at five which is about a turn and a half away from dropping into the cup for yet another birdie.

    He stays at eight under.

  20. Postpublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 17 May

    Hubbard -8 (11*)

Live text commentators curse (see 18:55 BST post) for Mark Hubbard, who picks up an unwelcome bogey on the 11th after failing to recover from finding the right fairway bunker off the tee.
