  14. Mark Hughes news conferencepublished at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

And Hughes knows he needs to keep his side challenging until the end of the season.

"We weren't anticipating challenging [for Europe] this season, but given the fact that we are in a good position, we have good games coming up then you never know," he said.

"Sides who started brightly, like Southampton, they have fallen back a little bit and we have gained some momentum. If we continue to play as well as we have done and those teams slip up then we are ready to get in there.

"We try to give our players targets throughout the season and break it up into more manageable pieces. Once one period has been navigated then we focus on the next batch of games. In my career that has helped. I also think that our training means we are always fresh. We push players early in the week, but later on we make sure the lads are fresh. We work hard and train for quality rather than quantity."

  15. Mark Hughes news conferencepublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

More from Mark Hughes as his side bid for a league double over Everton after they won 1-0 at Goodison Park on Boxing Day.

"A huge thing in the Premier League is confidence, and at the moment we are hugely confident," he said.

"Everton are maybe less so given the fact that they haven't carried their European form into the Premier League. They did ok against Arsenal, albeit they lost the game on Sunday, and we know that they are a good side. That said, we are playing well and we see it as another opportunity for maximum points. That is what we are looking for.

"We are trying to improve upon last year's total. That is the aim. If we continue then European football is an outside chance."

Last of the Premier League managers facing the media on Tuesday is Stoke City's Mark Hughes ahead of the visit of Everton.

And Hughes has criticised Hull City manager Steve Bruce over the injury which left Stephen Ireland with stitches to his leg following a challenge by Tigers defender Maynor Figueroa.

"I think Steve has fallen into the trap of trying to defend the undefendable," said Hughes. "He has seen the two challenges and I don't think there is any comparison whatsoever. I don't think Steve has done himself too much credit with his opinions of the events that day.

"It is easy to defend your players, and I will say I am guilty of it too at times. On this occasion, I don't think Steve needed to defend him. It would have been better for him to have come out and said it how it was."

  17. Monk says Williams is not for salepublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Swansea manager Garry Monk insists his skipper Ashley Williams is not for sale.

Williams turns 31 in August and signed a new four-year Swansea deal last summer but television pundit Robbie Savage claimed last weekend that the Wales captain should be playing for a top-six club.

"Ash is massive for us and I think he's been linked every year near enough to moving away," said Monk.

"He's very settled here and loves the club. He stands for a lot of what we are doing and how I want to go forward with the club and the team, so I don't envisage that changing at all."

  18. Mauricio Pochettino news conferencepublished at 15:05 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Tottenham also confirm they will hold a minute's applause in honour of former skipper Dave Mackay ahead of kick-off against Swansea.

The ex-Scotland midfielder, who helped Spurs win the league and FA Cup double in 1961, has died aged 80.

Black armbands will be worn by the squad and a number of the club's highest-profile former players will pay tribute to Mackay at half-time.

When asked about Mackay, Pochettino described the Scot as a Tottenham "legend".

  19. Mauricio Pochettino news conferencepublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Spurs need three points against Swansea on Wednesday to lift the gloom - but Mauricio Pochettino knows it will be a difficult task against the side directly below his team in the Premier League table.

Swansea, who include former Spurs midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson in their ranks, could close the gap on seventh-placed Spurs to one point with a win.

"Swansea are a team who can play very good football, very good players and we know players like Sigurdsson," says Pochettino.

"It is important to get the three points. We need to get some good feelings and this game is important."
