    Whelan purchased Wigan Athletic in February 1995 with the club in the old Third Division.

    They were promoted to the Premier League in 2005 and spent eight seasons there.

    In 2013 they beat Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup and went on to qualify for the Europa League group stages.

    In a statement, Whelan said: "The time has now come to hand over the reins. I am approaching 80 years old and spend an increasingly long time abroad, and cannot make it to games. It is a decision I have been mulling over for some years and I believe David is now ready.

    "Contrary to some suggestions, there are no plans to sell the club, which will remain in family hands and I have every confidence that David, along with chief executive Jonathan Jackson, will lead us forwards with wisdom."

    Dave Whelan has resigned as chairman of Championship side Wigan Athletic but will remain as owner.

    The 78-year-old's grandson, David Sharpe, 23, will oversee the running of the club.

    Premiership side London Irish have added to their staff for next season with the appointments of assistant coaches Grant Doorey and Clark Laidlaw.

    Doorey will be defensive coach, while Laidlaw will coach the backs, and both men will work under incoming head coach Tom Coventry.

    The FA of Wales's response is, well, that there is no response from them yet.

    "We are making no official comment at the moment," a spokesman told BBC Sport.

    Wales accounted for five players in the Great Britain men's squad at London 2012, with Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Neil Taylor all taking part.

    Northern Ireland's governing body says, like their Scottish counterparts, it has not changed its position from London 2012.

    No Northern Irish players were included in either the GB men's or women's squads at the last Olympics.

    "The association was of the understanding that participation at the London Olympics was a one-off," the Irish FA told BBC Sport.

    "The Irish FA believes that, when playing, our players should play in a Northern Ireland shirt."

    The Scottish FA's stance is believed to be unchanged from London 2012 when it opposed a Team GB but did not prevent Scottish players from taking part.

    No Scottish players made the GB men's team, although Kim Little and Ifeoma Dieke represented the women.

    The Scottish FA's opposition is based on the threat that backing a Team GB could poses a risk to its individual memberships of Fifa and the International Football Association Board.

    Reanne Evans has accepted an invitation to take on the men in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship.

    The 29-year-old 10-times ladies champion said she is "thrilled" by the offer which leaves her three wins away from competing in the televised stages at the Crucible.

    "It shows that everybody gets a chance if they work hard enough and can achieve their dreams" she said.

    The Scottish Football Association says Dave Mackay will be remembered with a minute's applause before Scotland's friendly against Northern Ireland later this month.

    Former Scotland midfielder Mackay, who won 22 caps and helped his nation reach the 1958 World Cup finals, has died aged 80.

    "The Scottish FA is deeply saddened by the news of Dave Mackay's death," said a SFA statement.

    "He was a legendary figure with Heart of Midlothian, Tottenham Hotspur and Derby County; an inspirational pillar for the clubs with whom he played with distinction and, of course, his country.

    "His last international appearance occurred against Northern Ireland in 1965 and the Scottish FA believe it is appropriate that a minute's applause should be observed in his honour prior to the forthcoming match."

    Irish rugby star Paul O'Connell says he has been "on the back-foot all week" after a poll voted him as Ireland's sexiest rugby player., external

    Fellow Ireland player Andrew Trimble joked that his Ulster team-mate Tommy Bowe is "gutted" after missing out on the award.

    "Tommy really thought this was going to be his year to win the sexiest rugby player in Ireland so he hasn't left the house," Trimble told BBC NI. "He's very disappointed."

    Could the 2019 Solheim Cup be held in the UK? Certainly if England, Scotland or Wales get their way. Each nation has expressed an interest in holding the biennial competition which sees Europe take on the United States.

    Seven other countries - Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey - are also teeing up a bid.

    The Ladies European Tour will hosts a 'bidding seminar' on Wednesday (tomorrow), with the winning nation set to be announced later this year.

    Europe won the most recent event, held in 2013, with an historic first victory in the United States.

    US Open champion Marin Cilic and world number seven Stan Wawrinka are the latest players to agree to play in the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club.

    The pair join British number one Andy Murray, defending champion Grigor Dimitrov and four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt in the line-up for the tournament which takes place from 15-21 June.
