Former England favourite Paul Gascoigne has also had his say on Sterling as part of a wide-ranging interview on BBC Radio 5 live.

"There are 11 players on the pitch and Raheem was picked out," says Gazza. "That means he is doing something right, because Roy knows he is a great player.

"I'd say to Sterling if you are getting kicked left, right and centre and getting booed it is because they are scared. They don't want you on the ball because you are dangerous. Take it as a compliment. The time to worry is when they stop talking about you."

  2. Agony aunt Hodgsonpublished at 08:57 British Summer Time 9 June 2015

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling was booed throughout when he played for England in their goalless draw against Republic of Ireland on Sunday.

It was about as exciting as the game got as fans made their feelings known about the 20-year-old refusing to sign a new contract with his club. And, if Sterling needs a consoling figure, then Hodgson is ready for that role.

"Wayne [Rooney] might [speak to him], but we don't ask players to do that job for us," says Hodsgon.

"We make it clear as a staff we are always available and more than happy to listen to their woes or any situations that develop."

The fight on 18 July will be the Northern Irishman's first outside the United Kingdom and the second defence of his title.

"I want to become a star in the USA and this is my first step on that journey," said the unbeaten Frampton. "Alejandro Gonzalez Jr is a dangerous Mexican challenger but he has never fought anyone like me and on the 18th of July he is in for a big, big shock."

Hopefully, watching Sir Bradley Wiggins go round and round and round and round and round and round a velodrome didn't make you too dizzy.

Wiggins' exploits saw him break the hour record set by fellow Briton Alex Dowsett, who now wants it back.

The 26-year-old travelled 52.937km (32.89 miles) in May but was surpassed by 35-year-old Wiggins' distance of 54.526km (33.88 miles) on Sunday.

"It is an event I enjoyed. I enjoyed the build-up and executing it. It is right up my street as a time trialist with a track background," said Dowsett.
