    Mike Phelan

There's nothing fake about that smile.

Mike Phelan wants to sit in that chair on a permanent basis and a little bit more often. But it's still very much in a temporary role as he faced the media again with the Hull City a club very much as you were. Nothing has changed.

It's seven weeks since Steve Bruce walked away, but Phelan could be named Manager of the month after an impressive start with no new arrivals and injuries to key players.

He said: "Right now we have one owner. I’m not sure what is going on. I can’t answer those questions, that’s for the owner. For me, it’s about making sure the players aren’t distracted by any of that. All we’ve done is sat down once and spoken about the possibility of me becoming manager. All I see it as is talks are in progress."

Shaq to be inducted into Hall of Famepublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 9 September 2016

    Basketball

Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, who played for six teams including the Orlando Magic, LA Lakers and Miami Heat is going to be inducted into basketball’s Hall of Fame later on Friday.

O'Neal won four NBA titles - three with the Lakers and the last with Miami - and was named as the league's Most Valuable Player in 2000.

'Shaq' who is 7ft 1in tall, is apparently also a big fan of League One Northampton Town, and the Cobblers are among those sending their congratulations to the big man...

Well, if it's going to fit anyone...

Sylvia Gore MBE passed away this morning. She was 71 and had been suffering from cancer. She was an icon of the women’s game and scored the first ever official England international goal, against Scotland in 1972, after the FA had lifted their 50-year ban on women playing the game.

Nicknamed the “Denis Law of women's football”, she once scored 134 goals in one season.

She was made an ambassador of Manchester City Women’s Football Club in March this year.

Mike Phelan took temporary charge of Hull after Steve Bruce left the club on 22 July.

But the 53-year-old could be named Premier League manager of the month after wins against Leicester and Swansea.

At one stage the Tigers only had 13 fit senior players.

Phelan said: "It would be a terrific achievement, not least because of the difficulties we’ve had."

Hull City made a raft of signings at the end of the transfer window including Dieumerci Mbokani, Markus Henriksen, James Weir, Will Keane, David Marshall and club record signing Ryan Mason.

The Tigers won their opening two games before losing to Manchester United.

Mike Phelan said all the signing are fit to face Burnley and Uruguay striker Abel Hernandez will be assessed today after returning from international duty on Thursday night.

"We’ve got the belief we can build on the start we’ve made. We’ve now got a squad we feel is more competitive.”

“The Burnley game is a big one. I don’t consider us favourites because they won the Championship title last season.”

Caretaker manager Mike Phelan has been discussing his Hull future "It's irrelevant. It's still about preparing the team.

"Those discussions will continue. It's not that it's ended. We've had a good start to the season. Why wouldn’t I want to be sitting in this chair more often?"

If nothing else we all thought Mike Phelan would be appointed as permanent manager at Hull City this week, but clearly that's not the case and it's as you were with the takeover of the club by a Chinese consortium having stalled.

Same owners, same temporary manager and same need to overcome the odds.

Phelan's future and that of club's is still unclear...

One of the biggest shocks of the transfer window was Jack Wilshere joining Bournemouth on a season-long loan.

Arsene Wenger says he expects the England midfielder to be a Gunner again next season.

"We had a chat and he himself was concerned he would not get enough competition. I couldn't guarantee that and it looked logical to give him time - the challenge is to play the games."

He added:  "I hope personally that he stays his whole career here. He is a world-class player, doesn't have to show me his quality."

West Brom boss Tony Pulis was said to be disappointed by the club's failure to land some of his preferred targets this summer and there were even rumours he may resign.

Speaking today he said: "We've got players in and now everything has to be batted down and we have to get on with it.

"Everybody has got to get together now. We've got four or five months now to get as many points as we can.

"We have to focus on getting results. All the stuff that surrounds transfer windows is over. We need to get the results fans want."

Sibling rivalry or brotherly love? There's an element of both at Selhurst Park this season after Christian Benteke pointed Palace in the direction of his younger brother Jonathan, who will also be vying for a forward spot in Alan Pardew's line-up.

"Christian's settled in well because he's a lovely guy," said Pardew. "His brother has too and I'll be taking him this weekend.

"Jonathan Benteke is a young striker. And young strikers are hard to come by. It was his brother who pointed him out to us."

Pardew also added former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini to his ranks this week, and says the Frenchman will travel with the squad to Middlesbrough.

"Whenever I watched Arsenal when Mathieu was in the side, he always gave them that winning mentality, that will to get over the line," he added. "That mentality is what I want to add here. So he can be the figurehead of that move.

"He'll be pushing the likes of Joe Ledley and Yohan Cabaye - and I think he will push them very, very hard."

New signing Loic Remy looks set to be sidelined for up to two months, and boss Alan Pardew says the club must treat the forward's thigh injury carefully.

"Remy's got a tear in his thigh," said Pardew. "It's an area where recovery is difficult, so we have to be very, very careful.

"We're so disappointed, because he's looked great. We have enough cover for now, but look forward to his return in seven to eight weeks."
