    Wilfried Bony joined from Manchester City on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day.

    Mark Hughes said: "He will add a key element to how we want to play and brings something to the table that we haven't had here for a very long time. At times we have been guilty of missing the final end product but I sense that Wilfried will address that."

    Switzerland midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is out with a calf injury. Hughes says Egypt midfielder Ramadan Sobhi and US defender Geoff Cameron only returned to Stoke on Wednesday and he will make a call on them today. Mame Diouf is another who has returned with a slight issue and won't be available to face Spurs.

    Some more news from Flushing Meadows where Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares have beaten defending champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut of France to reach the US Open doubles final.  

    They will play Spain's unseeded Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Saturday's final.

    Murray and Soares won the Australian Open title in January - their first Grand Slam tournament together.

    The Scot, 30, has now reached the final in four of his last six Grand Slam events, and two of four since teaming up with Soares at the start of 2016.

    Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova has stunned Serena Williams to reach the US Open final and end the American's reign as world number one.

    Williams, 34, double-faulted on match point to lose 6-2 7-6 (7-5), and Pliskova will face German second seed Angelique Kerber in the final.

    The result guarantees that Kerber will overtake Williams at the top of the rankings after the US Open.

    After day one Britain have won five golds and 11 medals in Rio.

    Steve Bate - with pilot Adam Duggleby - and Megan Giglia won cycling golds, while swimmers Ollie Hynd and Bethany Firth also took golds.

    Swimmers Harriet Lee and Stephanie Millward won silver and bronze respectively, while Jessica-Jane Applegate took bronze behind Firth in the S14 100m backstroke.

    Scot Andrew Mullen, 19, won bronze and Jonathan Fox claimed silver.

    A few hours ago Dame Sarah Storey became Great Britain's most successful female Paralympian by winning her 12th gold medal on the opening day in Rio.

    The 38-year-old Para-cyclist had shared the GB women's record for Paralympic titles with former wheelchair racer Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson,

    But she beat compatriot Crystal Lane in the C5 3,000m individual pursuit final to break the record.
