It's quite incredible to think that every season Patrick Mahomes has played as a start in the NFL he's played in the AFC Championship game.

The Chiefs will appear in their sixth straight AFC title game next week, which puts them second only behind the New England Patriots (8) but this time they'll be on the road after hosting the last five.

With 13 play-off wins, Mahomes now joins Ben Roethlisberger and Brett Favre in joint-sixth on the all time list - and a win next week will see him tie with Terry Bradshaw, John Elway and Peyton Manning on 14.

There's still some way to go to get anywhere near Tom Brady's 35 though...

  4. Road rulespublished at 02:48 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

It's very public knowledge that Patrick Mahomes hadn't played a true play-off road game before tonight, well, now he has, and come out on top.

In one of the most raucous atmosphere you could imagine as well, and he admitted the Chiefs came to prove a point.

"First of all, this is a great environment," said Mahomes on the field after the game. "We did hear about it [Mahomes not playing an away play-off game] all week and we came here to prove a point.

"That is a great offence and great football player in Josh Allen, but our defence in the fourth quarter said enough is enough."

  5. FT - Chiefs win!published at 02:44 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

There it is! That was a draining, bruising, brilliant play-off game between two of the best teams in the business and best QBs in the league.

Both of them produced the goods but in the end there's a familiar sense of failure for the Bills with a missed field goal costing them the game.

So it's the Chiefs who move on to face Baltimore on the road as they play in their sixth straight AFC title game.

  6. First down!published at 02:41 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Isiah Pacheco barges his way with two runs to get a first down and that's going to be enough to send the Chiefs through to yet another AFC Champinship game!

  7. field goal

Field goal - No good!published at 02:39 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen can't make anything happen so Tyler Bass walks on to kick a 44-yarder to level the game.

    But he's missed!

The kick set off nice enough but took a massive swerve off to the right, and that has stunned Highmark Stadium into silence.

  8. Two-minute warningpublished at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Drama all the way in this one, with the game firmly in Buffalo's hands as they sit on the KC 26-yard line they're already well within field goal range to tie this up.

They'll be going for the touchdown though, and to ideally leave it as late as possible so as not to give Mahomes any time to work with - it only took him 13 seconds once...

  9. Postpublished at 02:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

The Chiefs will be kicking themselves for the mistakes they've made in this game, as Buffalo are now marching towards the red zone with under three minutes left to play.

The Bills could well win this without Mahomes even getting the ball back.

  10. How did Buffalo keep that?published at 02:31 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen fumbles on a run and the ball is right there for Kansas City to scoop up, but they bobble it and can't grab hold, leaving Buffalo to recover.

They're now going to go for it on fourth down - and they get it! Another bullet dodged by the Bills as they move the chains.

  11. Postpublished at 02:29 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Buffalo back in a groove now and getting into short enough third down situations for Josh Allen to convert easily enough. They're nearing midfield as we dip under six minutes remaining.

  12. No go!published at 02:22 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

These two have been marching up and down the field at will, and yet now everything has just tightened up and now it's the Chiefs who have to punt - for the first time today.

Superb coverage there on that possession by the Bills secondary, while they also got pressure on Mahomes - strange play calling there not to give Pacheco the ball and run it on the early downs.

  13. Big flagpublished at 02:18 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

It looks like the Chiefs will have to punt, but there's a late flag for pass interference on Buffalo. Again it's a close call and this time it goes Kansas City's way.

  14. Shank!published at 02:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Buffalo do punt it this time, with injured punter Sam Martin shanking his effort somewhat and it bobbles out of bounds at the KC 43.

Another decent position to start for Patrick Mahomes, who will no doubt still be fuming at Mecole Hardman's fumble on the last drive.

  15. Buffalo ball!published at 02:09 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Again, wow! It's a close call, a really close call, but the TV officials decide there's enough to overturn the original on-field call of him being down.

That's a truly massive stroke of luck for the Bills, is it their night?

  16. 'No reason to extend the play'published at 02:09 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Phoebe Shecter, former Buffalo Bills coach, on Sky Sports: “It’s first and goal, there’s absolutely no reason to be reaching the ball out like that.”

  17. Hang on!published at 02:06 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

This is huge, and I mean huge! Just after the turnover the Chiefs are looking to punch in a touchdown, but the ball pops out of Mecole Hardman's grasp and bobbles into the end zone.

That could mean a touchback and the Bills getting the ball back. It's probably the worst rule in the game, but it could come to Buffalo's rescue.

  18. Turnover!published at 02:04 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Wow! Sean McDermott has been pretty safety-first but on fourth down he goes for a fake punt, with Damar Hamlin of all people taking the ball.

He's stopped short though and the Chiefs take over in tremendous field position. That's a huge change in momentum.

  19. Postpublished at 02:02 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Ndamukong Suh, 2021 Super Bowl winner, on Sky Sports: "It's going to be a very interesting end to the game. It seems which offence has the ball last will win it but it also depends on which defence can get a stop and get the ball back to their offence to give them a chance to score."

  20. Last possession wins?published at 02:01 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Seems like this could come down to another case of whoever gets the ball last wins the game.

Neither defence has looked like getting a stop - but if one did step up then that could also turn the tide in their favour.

Buffalo probably the most likely given they've been hanging onto the ball a lot longer during their drives and that means the KC defence will be pretty gassed.

Can't wait to find out either way.
