Kansas City will probably take that from the first drive and first sampling of this feverish atmosphere. Mahomes almost converts on third down with a big throw to Justin Watson but Dane Jackson helps knock it clear.

Harrison Butker then lines up for a 47-yard kick that's into the stiff wind at Highmark Stadium, as you can tell by the way he gives it the beans just to get there, which it does.

The Bills Mafia, as they're known, turns up the volume to the max to 'welcome' Patrick Mahomes onto the field, but despite the noise he manages to hit rookie Rashee Rice for a 25-yard gain.

Tyler Bass converts from 27 yards but that winds looks tricky as it was trying to push the ball wide right even from such close range.

A couple of strokes of luck for Buffalo there when the Chiefs could have stolen possession, but it was a strong opening drive that has not only given them three points, but confidence that they can move the ball on the second-best scoring defence in the league

Buffalo had sliced right through the Chiefs defence, but they've been great all season and finally they stop the Bills in their tracks in the shadow of the end zone, so the hosts will line up for a field goal.

  6. 'Great opening drive'published at 23:52 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Great catch from Dalton Kincaid as the Bills continue to roll along - Josh Allen has come to play tonight that's for sure. He's slinging absolute rockets and has also been using his legs early on.

Josh Allen with a heads-up play as he throws it sideways as he is beyond the line of scrimmage so can't throw a forward pass. It looks like it may have gone forward but the Chiefs don't challenge.

Allen makes the most of it by barging over for a first down on a QB sneak on the next play to keep the drive going.

It's often said in NFL circles - it's not a rivalry until you beat them. And Josh Allen accepts Buffalo need to beat Kansas City in the play-offs.

Sure, the Bills have beaten the Chiefs three times since Allen and Patrick Mahomes have been their starting quarterbacks, but all three of those victories came in the regular season - the most recent a 20-17 win at Arrowhead in December.

Now the Bills are playing at home, in Mahomes' first play-off game on the road, so they are unlikely to get a better chance to get one over the Chiefs in the post-season than today.

"They've been at the top of the mountain, they know what it takes to get there - we've yet to do that," said Allen. "As a competitor, as a player, to be in a situation like this is something that you dream about."

We're underway in Buffalo, so let's look at the QB stats.

Patrick Mahomes' stats for this season don't make for great reading. They're his worst since becoming the Chiefs' starting quarterback. But they'd look a whole lot better if his receivers didn't top the league for dropped passes.

Josh Allen has passed for less touchdowns than he has in the last four seasons and thrown a career-high 18 interceptions.

However, he has claimed a career-high 15 rushing touchdowns, and a combined 44 TDs is more than any other QB this season.

This is the third time in four years that Buffalo have met Kansas City in the play-offs. The Chiefs have won the previous two - and who could forget the last one?!

Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen produced a thrilling finish, with the lead changing hands three times in the final two minutes before the Chiefs won it in overtime.

It was considered an instant classic and with Mahomes and Allen yet to hit their prime, many anticipated it becoming a classic quarterback rivalry - including Mahomes.

"We're going to play this team a lot in games like this," he said afterwards. "With that quarterback, that coaching staff and those players, there are going to be a lot of battles."

Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen have a 3-3 record in games against each other, although Mahomes has won both their play-off meetings.

With Kansas City and Buffalo still among the best teams in the AFC Conference, the star quarterbacks could meet many more times over the coming years.

The pair have become friends, admitting this week that they play golf together in the off-season, and Mahomes is among those hoping they can have a similar rivalry to that of legendary quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

"I grew up watching those games and remember how many memories I have from that," he said. "Hopefully we can play in these great games as well and give memories to the kids that come up behind us. I'm excited for the challenge."

Immediately after winning last season's Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs were favourites to do it all over again this season.

Their quest to become the NFL's first back-to-back champions since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004 began with a 21-20 loss at home to the Detroit Lions. They had improved to 6-2 before beating in-form Miami in Germany in November and then losing a Super Bowl rematch at home to Philadelphia the following week.

The Chiefs weren't really on the radar for the rest of the season. Their offence registering more dropped passes than anyone else so their 11-6 record was more down to their defence, which ranked second in the league for both points and yards allowed.

Kansas City showed their play-off pedigree as they disposed of Miami last week and although Buffalo beat them at Arrowhead in December, it's difficult to bet against them as long as Patrick Mahomes is their quarterback.

  18. Story of the season: Bills riding hot streakpublished at 23:34 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

The Buffalo Bills started the season among the Super Bowl favourites but kept giving away games by making mistakes on both sides of the ball.

At 6-6 they were in trouble, but they reeled off five straight wins - including in the final game against Miami - to pinch the AFC East, the second seed in the AFC and therefore home advantage for wildcard weekend.

The Bills have been in play-off mode for a while now and brushed aside Pittsburgh last week so they're battle tested just when you need it.

And they'll need to be to finally get one over Kansas City, who they face in the play-offs for the third time in four years. The Chiefs won the last two but this time the Bills have home advantage.

Make no mistake, this Detroit Lions team will be fighting tooth and nail next week against San Francisco - who only just about escaped with a win against Green Bay.

Deebo Samuel will be a huge miss if he can't go for San Francisco, and Dan Campbell's Detroit side will not take a backwards step.

Jared Goff knows them well from his time with the Rams, and maybe, just maybe, this is finally Detroit's year....
