It was football weather today at our seven cricket grounds.

And, let's be honest, it was a day when more people were worried about what was going on at their local football ground, and several other football grounds besides, than at the cricket.

But there were still some notable individual contributions around the country - chiefly at Headingley, where England duo Joe Root and Harry Brook both filled their boots with centuries against Derbyshire.

And currently discarded England opener Rory Burns also made a ton, 113 against Hampshire as reigning champions Surrey took a surely match-winning 208-run first-innings lead.

The Surrey-Hants game at The Oval is the only one of the seven matches into a third innings going into day three.

And sadly the weather may well have the final say in a lot of them.

    But there's always hope.

    Until the morrow . . .

  3. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 27 April

    Yorks 450-5 dec v Derbys 190-3

Joe Root completes a tidy spell of 0-8 from six overs and it's left to Matthew Fisher to bowl the final over of the day, switching from over to around the wicket against Wayne Madsen.

The veteran Derbyshire batter has to take a blow on the body from a short ball, but also picks up two more runs that take him to 88 at the close.

Brooke Guest is 74 not out at the other end and the visitors will resume in the morning 260 behind Yorkshire.

    Yorks 450-5 dec v Derbys 188-3

Wayne Madsen and Brooke Guest have batted superbly to haul Derbyshire out of the mire at 23-3.

Madsen has just negotiated a maiden over from Matthew Fisher and we'll have just two more tonight, with the visitors still trailing by 262.

  5. 'A good day for Essex'published at 18:35 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358, Essex 314-3

    Another good day for Essex.

Durham will have come in today with good hopes, with 358 on the board and a nightwatchman Sam Cook in.

But Cook hung around with Dean Elgar, before the century from Feroze Khushi. Nick Browne batted well for his 94 not out and Jordan Cox is not in any hurry whatsoever, on 19.

It's been a tough day for the bowlers once again. Durham have plugged away but have only managed to remove three Essex men.

  6. 'Browne might have to wait for his 100'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 27 April

    Close: Durham 358 v Essex 314-3

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Nick Browne might have to wait until Monday for his 100.

    He's on 94 from 219 balls.

  7. Close of play in Bristolpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 27 April

    Middlesex 203, Gloucestershire 271-6

Just two games left going now as the weather also has the final say at Nevil Road.

Thanks largely to half-centuries by Miles Hammond (81) and captain Graeme van Buuren (75), Gloucestershire lead Middlesex by 68 runs going into day three.

  8. Close of play at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358 v Essex 314-3

No rush of blood for Nick Browne in that final over of the day as he plays out three deliveries from Paul Coughlin to reach the close on 94 not out.

Jordan Cox added a single, fending off a short ball towards deep square leg to finish unbeaten on 19 and Essex will go into day three just 44 runs behind their hosts.

  9. 50 partnership for Browne and Coxpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358 v Essex 313-3

That's the third partnership of 50 or more in this Essex innings, with the largest that third-wicket stand of 166 between Nick Browne and Feroze Khushi.

Browne has also shared this current partnership with Jordan Cox as Essex have whittled the deficit down to below 50.

But it could be a slightly anxious night for the left-hander, who is 94 not out with one over left.

  10. Postpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 27 April

    Yorkshire 450-5 dec v Derbyshire 176-3

Into the final eight overs of the day at Headingley.

Joe Root has come on for a bowl alongside Ben Coad to see if they can break up the Wayne Madsen/Brooke Guest partnership which is now worth 154.

Basically they have pretty much all of Derbyshire's total!

Can the duo stay in til the close or will the hosts grab a precious wicket?

  11. Close of play at Chester Roadpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 27 April

    Somerset 309-9 dec, Worcestershire 107-1

Another game gone for the day at Kidderminster.

It has been a grim day in the Midlands - and the early finish at Chester Road comes rapidly after news of the day's abandonment in Birmingham.

Also, as at Edgbaston, prospects are not a lot brighter for Sunday.

  12. 'Essex have taken risks, nothing spectacular'published at 18:11 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358 v Essex 310-3

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex Sport

Essex have taken the risks and they've taken the bad balls when they've been there.

They've done nothing spectacular but the conditions are there and if you graft, the runs are there.

  13. Postpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358 v Essex 308-3

Nick Browne is up to 90 now and must have one eye on trying to add 10 more before the close.

The left-hander just tried to keep the strike with an on-drive off the final ball of Paul Coughlin's over, but a good piece of fielding sent him scurrying back to the safety of his crease.

Four overs left to be bowled tonight.

  14. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 27 April

    Surrey 359 v Hampshire 151 & 31-2

Sadly, that's all for today from the Oval, where Surrey are firmly in control against Hampshire - but the rain has prevented them from continuing to drive home their advantage tonight.

The champions will be hoping for better weather in the morning, while Hampshire may not mind the odd spot of damp too much.

  15. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 27 April

    Notts 400, Warwickshire 71-3

It has also been called for the day in Birmingham after a good hour of expectation to that effect.

Local wordsmith Brian Halford described it earlier as "Stygian gloom".

Which sounds a far more accurate reading than any light meter!

Back for more at 11,00 in the morning. But alas, the third-day forecast is not good!

  16. Postpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 27 April

    Yorkshire 450-5 dec v Derbyshire 163-3

The weather seems to be doing it's best to curtail the evening sessions across the grounds but we're still playing at Headingley.

And it's still Derbyshire's unbeaten rescue act of Madsen (70) and Guest (65) who are dictating proceeedings.

They've done a great job of frustrating the Yorkshire bowlers after the hosts made such a blistering start.

  17. Second batting point for Essexpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358 v Essex 301-3

Well, finally Essex have hauled themselves above the 300 mark and on to a second batting bonus point.

Nick Browne latches onto a Brydon Carse half-volley and drills it back down the ground across the rope to move on to 85.

Surely Browne must be tempted to have a dart for his hundred tonight?

  18. Close of play in Leicesterpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 27 April

    Northamptonshire 453-7 dec, Leicestershire 97-2

No more play today at Grace Road.

The weather has had the final word.

  19. Still off in Birminghampublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 27 April

    Notts 400, Warwickshire 71-3

Still grim at Edgbaston - and unlikely to play again.

The bad light kept them off when they were due to resume at 5:30 - and still keeps them off now.

  20. Postpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 27 April

    Durham 358 v Essex 296-3

Essex are really crawling towards this second batting point, although they've still got 20 overs left prior to the cut-off.

Eight more of those are due to be bowled tonight, with Nick Browne on 81 and Jordan Cox 14.
