England's Ben Duckett is just three short of the fifth double century of his career when he resumes at Edgbaston this morning after a masterful first day 197 out of Notts' 367-8.

"Ben Duckett showed why he is an international cricketer," said Warwickshire fast bowler Olly Hannon-Dalby, who took half his side's eight wickets, and had all the Notts top order in trouble, apart from Duckett. "He batted really well and scored over half his team's runs.

"It was a fluctuating day and the conditions changed a little bit with the weather. When it went overcast just after lunch the ball did a bit for us and then again later on we were glad to be bowling and took advantage with a few late wickets.

Nottinghamshire half-centurion Ben Slater added: "We know how good Ben is. He has been a bit annoyed to miss out in the first couple of games, but he has had a couple of decent balls in there and you can get that early season in England."

Somerset's Tom Banton, who went to school just up the road at Bromsgrove and played club cricket locally for Barnt Green, stole the first-day honours at Chester Road, Kidderminster.

He top-scored with 92 before being run out by home skipper Brett D'Oliveira late on as the visitors posted 309-9 declaring.

“I rode my luck a bit," he told BBC Radio Somerset. "With a club wicket, there is always enough in the wicket. Balls with your name on it. Things are going for me at the moment and long may it continue.

“The run out is just cricket. I was pretty gutted when I walked off but I wasn’t going to change the way I was playing just because I was in the 90s.

After declaring to send down five overs at Worcestershire openers Jake Libby and nightwatchman Adam Finch, the hosts survived intact.

Al-rounder Matthew Waite, who bowled impressively to pick up two wickets on his recall, told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "They came with a good counter-attack after Jason Holder’s three wickets just before tea.

“Tom Banton played really well and got stuck in and, for us, that’s what it is going to be all about. The ball nipped day and there is a bit more carry this week. It’s a tricky pitch but you can get in and make a big one."

  6. Durham have the edge, says Ackermannpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 27 April

Durham’s Colin Ackermann feels his side are on top in their clash against Championship leaders Essex after recording a maiden century for the county on the first day at Chester-le-Street.

Ackermann, who moved from Leicestershire at the end of last season, top-scored with 112 in Durham’s total of 358 and shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 137 with Ollie Robinson (90).

“I’d say we’re slightly ahead in the game,” said Ackermann. “It would have been nice to get 400 but in saying that, we’ve got the bowling attack that can really run through them if we’re disciplined with the new ball.

“It was very pleasing to get my first hundred for the club. I’ve worked extremely hard over the last couple of weeks and it was fantastic to see it pay off.”

Essex faced just two overs in their reply last night, with Dean Elgar and nightwatchman Sam Cook guiding their side to 5-0 in that time.

Kyle Abbott ticked off a personal landmark when he claimed his 600th first-class wicket at The Oval – and Hampshire will need more from the veteran seamer to fight their way back into contention against Surrey.

After 15 wickets tumbled on the opening day, defending champions Surrey will resume on 123-5, still 28 behind Hampshire’s first innings total of 151 although skipper Rory Burns remains at the crease on 39.

“A lot has happened in between that first one and the 600th but I’m pretty proud of it and hopefully there will be a few more.

“It’s been a tough start to the season but as a bowling group we were in good shape and that showed. The pitch did a bit and it also swung as well as nipping a bit more than perhaps we expected.”

James Fuller, Brad Wheal and Mohammad Abbas all claimed a wicket apiece to back up Abbott’s two for Hampshire, who have drawn all three of their Championship fixtures so far this season.
