The Clarets kept a 12th successive Championship clean sheet to keep pace with the top two and Bristol City finally broke into the play-off spots.

Of course, the Robins may see themselves displaced tomorrow with both Coventry and West Brom hot on their heels but for tonight, they get to sleep well knowing promotion is a very real possibility.

We will be back with you tomorrow as three games kick-off at 12:30 GMT including a battle at the bottom between Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City, while Derby County and Hull City are also in action.

  3. Substitutions had 'terrific impact' - Manningpublished at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    FT: Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Bristol City manager Liam Manning was full of praise for George Earthy who scored both goals for the Robins tonight in the 2-1 win against Middlesbrough.

The West Ham loanee, who joined the club last summer, opened his scoring for the club with his first goals after coming on from the bench.

“The lads came on and I thought had terrific impact," Manning told BBC Radio Bristol.

"Delighted for George [Earthy], he’s done terrifically well. I know he’s probably wanted to start more games but on a first loan he’s coped really well and he’s a fantastic character.

"I’m delighted for him, he deserves all the plaudits tonight.

Hopefully that’s the first of many, hopefully he can kick on from there. I thought he had really good impact, as did Yu [Hirakawa] with the cross he put in."

With 13 league games to play, Burnley have matched the Championship record of 25 clean sheets in a season, set by QPR in the 2010-11 campaign.

The record for the most in an EFL campaign is 27, currently held by Wigan Athletic in League One in 2017-18.

James Trafford has also equalled the most clean sheets by a single goalkeeper in a Championship season of 24 - also held by John Ruddy for Wolves in 2017-18 and Paddy Kenny for QPR in 2010-11.

Burnley have still only conceded nine goals in their 34 Championship games.

    Tight.

  6. 'Play-off push alive and kicking'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    FT: Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

    Sophie Hurcom
    BBC Sport at Ashton Gate

There was a real feeling of frustration around Ashton Gate when it was 1-0 to Middlesbrough, and not just because it was former Bristol City striker Tommy Conway who had scored the opener.

Bristol City fans know they have been tantalisingly close to the top six for some time and it felt like tonight could turn into another missed chance to move into the play-offs.

The substitutions from Liam Manning really made the difference however, bringing a whole new energy when their attack had started to fall flat.

All three played a part in George Earthy's first goal and even after the second went in you felt they could still get another.

There's a host of fixtures to come tomorrow, but either way Bristol City fans will have left with a whole lot of belief tonight that their play-off push is alive and kicking.

  8. 'Sheffield Wednesday tried to take it to Burnley'published at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    FT: Burnley 4-0 Sheffield Wednesday

    Steve Eyre
Former Manchester City coach on BBC Radio Lancashire

That is the best away start to a game at Turf Moor I have seen this season, but thankfully it dissolved into not that much.

Well done to the opponents for trying to take it to Burnley.

Wednesday could not make their chances pay in the first half, then Burnley showed them how to do it.

Everything got better on the back of being one nil up anyway.

  9. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Burnley 4-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Burnley make it 12 straight league clean sheets and go two points behind second-placed Sheffield United - but this wasn't as straightforward as the scoreline suggests.

Wednesday, who have now conceded 16 without reply against teams in the top five this season, will wonder how they didn't go ahead during a dominant display before Marcus Edwards' 43rd-minute opener, including hitting a post early on.

They had several good chances to make it 1-1 before Josh Brownhill and Connor Roberts struck from Jaidon Anthony crosses.

Manuel Benson then hit a goal-of-the-season contender with his weaker right foot from outside the box to compound the visitors' misery. Burnley extend their unbeaten league run to 21 games in style.

  10. 'It flew like a rocket into the top corner'published at 21:57 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Burnley 4-0 Sheffield Wednesday

    Steve Eyre
Former Manchester City coach on BBC Radio Lancashire

The moment it left his foot, it flew like a rocket into the top corner.

He does it for the first time this season, a trademark from a couple of seasons ago.

What a way to cap a great night now for the Clarets.

  11. goal

GOAL - Burnley 4-0 Sheffield Wednesdaypublished at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Manuel Benson (90+5 mins)

The goal of the evening comes from substitute Manuel Benson.

Burnley's latest sharp spell of passing towards the Wednesday box ends with the Angola international shifting the ball swiftly to his right from outside the box on the left and swinging a magnificent finish into the far corner of the net.

    Sensational strike.

  12. CLOSE!published at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Burnley 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

    Almost a fourth for Burnley!

Substitute Lyle Foster bursts through inside the box and applies a low diagonal finish beyond advancing goalkeeper James Beadle.

The ball rolls narrowly wide of the far post. We're in the first of five minutes of added time.

Wednesday looked like a promotion chasing side in that first half, but now look like a relegation threatened side by the end of it.

  14. '12th clean sheet in a row?'published at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Burnley 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire

This would be a 12th clean sheet in a row.

There has only been one instance of a better run of clean sheets in English professional football and that was Manchester United in 2008-09 who kept 14 clean sheets.

  15. CLOSE!published at 21:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Burnley 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

After setting up three goals in his last two home games, Jaidon Anthony wants one of his own.

The Bournemouth loanee bends a fierce shot just wide of the far post from outside the box on the left.

It proves his last act of the evening, making way for Manuel Benson after playing a considerable part in what is looking certain to be Burnley's 18th win of their league campaign.

    Five minutes to go.

  16. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

Djeidi Gassama lies on the turf as the livewire is booked for simulation, having appealed for a penalty. Josh Cullen helps him up.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Burnley 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl switched it up in attack for Wednesday after Burnley's second goal, sending on Ibrahim Cissoko and Ike Ugbo for Michael Smith and Stuart Armstrong.

The German didn't quite have as much fortune as Scott Parker did with his pair of substitutions, seeing his side concede a third shortly afterwards.

Now new signing Ryo Hatsuse comes on for his debut in place of Josh Windass, while Barry Bannan makes way for Svante Ingelsson.

The home fans are serenading short passes from their team, while Wednesday needed James Beadle to rush out of his goal and hurriedly clear when the Clarets threatened to break through again on the edge of the box.

George Earthy celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Bristol City come back from behind to pick up a massive three points as they make their play-off push, while pressure continues to mount on Boro boss Michael Carrick.

George Earthy had yet to score for Bristol City before this match but he walks out of Ashton Gate with a double to see his side reach sixth on the table.

Though for Boro the bus back north will be a long one, with a sixth game in seven matches lost and a place in the play-offs an increasingly distant memory.

  20. INJURY TIMEpublished at 21:34 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February

    Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

There are four more minutes added to the clock.

Robins forward Scott Twine is struggling with cramp and boss Liam Manning withdraws him.

On comes Joe Williams, who returns to the squad after missing the last three games with injury.
