"England will be thrilled. I don't think this is a belting wicket but anything under 250 these days is well within range."

  2. SL 244-9published at 45.2 overs

David Willey to bowl the last over, with the last pair together - Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep. They get going with a leg bye, Pradeep chips a single over mid-off.

  3. wicket

    WICKET - Tharanga b Woakes 40 (SL 242-9)published at 49 overs

Bowled him! Woakes completes his spell (3-35) in style, rearranging Tharanga's furniture as the left-hander heaves across the line and misses.

"Bairstow took responsibility and took it with confidence. He is used to having gloves on. We are used to talking about the various merits of Buttler and Bairstow, what I can tell you is that they are both wonderful outfielders."

    WICKET - Maharoof c Bairstow b Woakes 9 (SL 242-8)published at 48.5 overs

Another steepler for Bairstow coming in from deep mid-wicket - and that's the end of Maharoof. Tharanga is running out of partners.

Alex Shcnopple: I misjudged a ball travelling at speed, ended up with a broken nose, two teeth fell out; match delayed for 10 minutes and I carried on.

  7. SL 241-7published at 48.3 overs

Tharanga guides a two through the covers, there's some good tandem work in front of the rope by England's Jason Roy and Alex Hales who'll be batting together soon. An attempted legside nudge is signalled as a leg bye, and Maharoof rotates the strike.

"I quite like it when a six is an event. I make a note of it in my book but when there are 15 or so you don't bother. I suspect there are more sixes that dots in the IPL."

  9. SL 237-7 (Tharanga 37, Maharoof 8)published at 48 overs

The boundary drought continues - we've only had one four and one six since the 40th over. Sri Lanka limp along with ones and twos - 12 balls to come.

Fat Jeff: Played three weeks after hernia op, completely useless but we managed to make up the team numbers.

Tom Kirman: Snapped my finger back diving forward for catch at mid off, dropped it guy hits hundred and we lose by one wicket off last ball.

  11. SL 234-7published at 47.3 overs

Third umpire Bruce "Captain America" Oxenford, he of the trusty arm shield, has a look - the snickometer shows an inside edge onto the pad, and even though there's no HotSpot, the snickometer spike is sufficient to show there's not enough evidence to overturn the "not out" decision.

  12. Umpire reviewpublished at 47.3 overs

A pigeon on the outfield - sadly no Bill Lawry or Henry Blofeld in the commentary box - and Tharanga swings Jordan high over extra cover, Root and Woakes converge but the diving Root can't quite reach the ball and they run two. A single takes him to 35 from 27 balls. Maharoof is hit on the pad, Jordan appeals, umpire unmoved and as England still have a review left in the bank with 15 balls left, they decide to use it...

"You never know in these damp conditions. We might get a reduced game and it might zip around a bit for the bowlers."

  15. SL 230-7 (Tharanga 32, Maharoof 6)published at 47 overs

A bouncer to Maharoof is called as an aerial wide, Sri Lanka are progressing virtually at walking pace here when a few overs ago, a score in excess of 250 looked more than possible. Having scored four from his first six balls, Maharoof summons a new bat, and a long over ends as he bashes a full toss back past the bowler for two.

"I like the way England are going with one-day cricket, you've got the pace of Plunkett, Willey with his left-arm, Woakes is improving all the time and Ben Stokes to add to that, then Rashid with a bit of mystery."

  17. SL 225-7published at 46.1 overs

Chris Woakes to bowl overs 47 and 49 - definite drizzle now but they're staying on. There's a long delay after the first ball as Morgan dries the ball with a towel, and they shuffle the field for the right-handed Maharoof.

  18. SL 224-7published at 46 overs

Farveez Maharoof, who as we learned earlier has a fractured finger on his left hand, is the new man in. Jordan to bowl. No early sign of any problem with Maharoof's battered digits as he's off the mark with a single, and clubs a two to get Sri Lanka off double-Nelson. Four overs left, and a few brollies are going up. Can we get through the innings unscathed by rain?

Dezzy Boro: Took a rather sharp catch in the slips years ago. Felt smug, next chance came and I caught it falling backwards, unfortunately, in the mouth. Catch upheld but I needed 14 stitches and lost three teeth.

England's players celebrate running out ShanakaImage source, Rex Features

"It's panic from Shanaka, because he had a couple of dot balls. The England players didn't think it was out, they had got into their fielding positions for the next delivery. So it now takes a new batsman a few balls to get in when at this stage you just want to be flying at every ball."
