  1. Pak 281-4published at 17:20 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

New ball available in four overs

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq is the new batsman, cutting his first ball straight through where third slip would (should?) have been and away for four, as third man can't cut it off.

I think they can have three spinners. If Woakes and Stokes play, you can have Moeen, Adil and another.

Joe Root could open, but only in subcontinental conditions. I wouldn't see it as a massive change if everyone moved up a place. And from three to two is not a massive change.

Drinks breakpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

As we're just about halfway through the final session, in a rare outbreak of common sense, the wicket is a perfect opportunity for the players to take some drinks. There are 17.3 overs left today.

It's a brilliant catch - well positioned. That second new ball is due in five overs, it's the perfect time to get a wicket. A wonderful innings from Shafiq. He was dropped on seven, but then he knuckled down and hasn't put a foot wrong. He's played some terrific strokes.

    Shafiq c Broad b Finn 109 (Pak 277-4)

What a catch! Shafiq tries to spank Finn through the leg side - and it's the unlikely figure of Stuart Broad, diving full length to his left at mid-wicket, with a stunning grab. Shafiq departs for an assured 109, and England have a glimmer of hope.

I think Sam Billings is one of the most exciting batsmen in the country. He's up there with Stokes and Jos Buttler. I have seen him play spin, I haven't seen him enough in four-day cricket , but his ability is unquestioned.

I do believe I've called that one... Joe Root into the attack! Perhaps Cook's "bowling" motion was directed at his vice-captain. Bowling in his sunglasses, Root is quickly through his over - good for the over-rate, if nothing else - but Pakistan negotiate it without too many problems. Although Root sinks to his knees when Younus helps one off his legs for four - perhaps he was hoping for a legside catch.

  8. Pak 270-3published at 17:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    Shafiq 107, Younus 70

Given that England don't really seem to have much of a plan on at the moment, apart from just getting through to 80 overs and the second new ball, I wonder if there's any harm in giving Joe "Goldenarm" Root an over or two. And as I type that, Alastair Cook almost looks like he's miming bowling. While Cookie has a none-too-shabby Test bowling average of seven, I don't think they're that desperate just yet.

Finn keeps it tight as best he can, but is annoyed with himself when he sends one down on middle and leg which Younus flicks off his thigh for four.

To get a pair, and then come out in the next match and score a century takes some inner confidence.

  10. Pak 265-3published at 17:05 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

New ball available in seven overs

Moeen Ali wheels away for his 16th over, once more the Pakistan batsmen aren't afraid to use their feet to him. Younus reverse-sweeps him for four, while Shafiq chips the ball towards long-off, scatters a few pigeons and it's saved just inside the rope as they run two.

England shuffle their seamers as Steven Finn is going to have his first trundle of the evening session. The Pakistan flag is flying at half-mast today following the sad passing of Hanif Mohammad, but it's fluttering proudly after a great show by their batsmen today. Younus dabs a single, Finn fires in an aerial wide, and it's really not been England's session - or their day.

It's the first time Shafiq has scored a century outside of number six and his second century outside Asia. He's the 12th player with a century in a match after making a pair in the previous match. He's the first Pakistani to do that.

He's done it! Shafiq pushes Moeen for a single past the diving man at mid-wicket, and Shafiq celebrates by raising his fist in triumph before removing his helmet and acknowledging the crowd. It's his ninth ton in Test cricket.

Lest we forget, he was dropped on seven...

Anderson brushes his hair away in frustration as Younus aims a flashing drive but gets an inside edge past the stumps for four. If ever one moment encapsulated a day of cricket... Since Shafiq reached 99, Younus has advanced from 41 to 58.

That's the Younus Khan we know. Head still, economy of foot movement, no messing about. Pakistan have a certain look in their eye.

While we're all waiting for Shafiq's century, it's time to doff our caps to Younus Khan as he cuts Anderson for four to pass 50 - he now has 31 Test fifties to add to his 31 centuries.
