Colin Troth: Desperate review. The polar opposite of LBW, all bat no pad.

Jonny Lipsham Studio: That was possibly the WORST review in the history of DRS. England desperate having dropped crucial catches.

    Shafiq 99, Younus 48

Shafiq, back on strike after a Younus single, has now been on 99 for 14 deliveries - but he can't even get a Moeen full toss away, and cuts the last ball of the over straight to a fielder at backward point (while dislodging a pigeon). The wait goes on.

Louise Cooke: Pedant alert! Younis's career does span two centuries [see 14:32] as 2000 was the last year of the 20th century.

My pedantry detector is off the scale... did you not celebrate the Millennium until 2001?!

New ball available in 12 overs

Shafiq is not tempted by an Anderson delivery which starts wide and gets wider. Then he swishes the bat at one which is only marginally less wide... why do batsmen suddenly panic like this when they get to 99? It's a maiden over.

Rob Zabrocky: That could be the most bizarre review I've ever seen.

    Shafiq 99, Younus 47

A rather curious over ends. Charles Dagnall on TMS reckons it's England's worst review since that ODI when Alex Hales smashed the ball to mid-wicket and reviewed it. Back to the Shafiq Show...

It's hit the middle of the bat. You can even hear the umpire having a little giggle. It's a shame as it was going on to hit the stumps.

  8. Pak 238-3published at 16:40 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

That's a shockingly bad review. It hit the middle of the bat! Third umpire Joel Wilson is a master of understatement when he says "it looks like bat first". There's nothing on HotSpot and England have wasted a review. Both sides have one left (though they get them back after 80 overs).

As a bowler, you kind of know if it's pad first. Moeen seemed very keen on that.

Hang on, what's happened here? Younus plays back and England are reviewing it for lbw...

As soon as Moeen's on everyone tries to take him on over mid-wicket.

Shafiq may be on 99, but for now it's Younus providing the fireworks, advancing down the track to blast Moeen over long-on and into the new stand at the Vauxhall End for six. He's on 47.

Shafiq, on 99... leaves the last ball of Anderson's over outside off stump. Keep the celebrations on hold for now.

A brief council of war is held before England turn back to Anderson in place of Broad. With 15 overs left before the new ball, this may be Jimmy's last spell with the old nut. Shafiq, on 97, hammers one into the deep at mid-wicket, scampers back for a two but Hales is quickly onto it to discourage thoughts of a third run for his hundred.

Although being run out going for a hundred would be a fitting tribute to the late Hanif Mohammad who died yesterday, and was famously run out going for his 500th! Shafiq on 99...

The umpires on the field I think should give Hales out because they had clear uninterrupted views. Has he been fined? 15%? Is that his dinner money gone?

    Partnership 103 from 154 balls

A sweep shot right out of the coaching manual from Younus, whose Test career almost spans two centuries - making his debut against Sri Lanka back in February 2000. Shafiq then unleashes the second six of the day, hoisting Moeen into the crowd over cow corner to move from 90 to 96 - and bring up the century stand. A back-cut to deep point brings a single - so he'll be on 97, and on strike for the next over.

I caused much outrage in the pub last night when I said I would have declared on 250, I still believe I'm right I think we would have knocked four over in the gloom of yesterday.

No-risk cricket from Pakistan against Broad - but the Notts paceman does find a bit of bounce from the pitch as Shafiq aims a hook shot, misses and Bairstow rather optimistically appeals for a catch behind. As Simon Mann points out on TMS, if the batsman had got a touch there, it would have probably flown over Bairstow's head for four.

In the last Test at Edgbaston Pakistan got a lead, England still batted very, very well to win the match. Today Pakistan get a lead or tomorrow, it might not go the same way. Sport doesn't always work out like that.
