    Moeen 11-0-51-1

Shafiq has eight Test centuries to his name (seven of which have come in Asia), he might have another in his sights as he sweeps Moeen for three. The Pakistan pair are finding easy pickings here, and Shafiq is into the nervous nineties.

Pakistan are toying with England here, waiting for the bad ball and then punishing them. Shafiq cuts Broad for four, earning him a glove-pump from his batting partner. Still bright and sunny, batting conditions utterly benign. Barely a cloud in the sky.

Shafiq has shown the wheel of fortune goes around. He was down a few days ago, and now he's on the verge of a hundred.

  5. Pak 204-3published at 16:18 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

Younus leans forward to punch a Moeen half-volley through the covers for four. Too wide there from the off-spinner. The veteran Younus has a measured 31 from 67 balls.

    60 overs

A ripple of applause around the post-tea crowd as Younus bounces up on his toes - in fact he's off the ground when ball strikes bat - to hook Broad for a single down to fine leg, as that's 200 for Pakistan. England have 20 overs until a new ball is available, and even Geoffrey sounds a little tired in his voice.

England have got some serious players - Younus, Misbah, Sarfraz - to get through before they get to the rabbits.

  9. Pak 199-3published at 16:11 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    Shafiq 81, Younus 26

England continue to pair pace with spin as Moeen Ali will continue. Shafiq adds a couple to move to 81, his side are one away from reaching 200.

James McCoy: No real debate around DRS. When you appeal normally you aren't specifying a way of getting out.

That's a very good point. An appeal covers all modes of dismissal.

Stuart Broad has applied a fresh layer of white sun cream all across his face - either that or he's been face down in a pile of cream buns during the interval. Either way, he takes the first over after the interval, Asad Shafiq aims a cross-batted slash and the ball bounces awkwardly out of Jonny Bairstow's grasp for a bye. Nine byes so far in the innings, and some rather harshly charged against the England stumper by the umpires.

Thanks, Bibhash. Safe hands? You've clearly never seen me field... So, two wickets have fallen today for the cost of 193 runs. So not a classic day of Test cricket - but an interesting one in other respects. And England are *only* three overs behind where they should be - so we should get a full 90 in today.

Teams are out, first England followed by the Pakistani batsmen, although Asad Shafiq is held up as a substitute brings out an arm guard he forgot. Which gives me an excellent opportunity to hand you over to the safe hands - safer than England's today anyway - of Mark Mitchener. Play!

Shafiq made the most of his chances, reaching his half-century as he and Younus began another productive recovery for Pakistan. There was still time for another half-chance for England, this time off an inside edge, but a diving Bairstow just couldn't get it.

And as people breakfasted in Chicago, pigged on pies in Glasgow, and tried explaining cricket to North Carolina folk, England were losing more opportunities for wickets. Asad Shafiq slashed at an Anderson delivery, but somehow found himself piercing the gap between Cook and Root in the slips. Another chance gone to go with the many from the first session.

Just when I had the nation in the grip of a fierce debate on fry-ups, Azhar Ali prompted another debate on DRS, as he was given not out lbw, but then sent walking for a caught behind after England reviewed and the third umpire found a spot on the batsman's glove.

England aren't out of the game, but Pakistan are in the position where they can take a good first-innings lead.
