Pakistan added 99 runs for the loss of one wicket in the afternoon session. And they pretty much enjoyed 99% of it. Asad Shafiq in particular must have had fun hitting Moeen Ali for six.
Younus 101* - 32nd Test century
Shafiq 109, Azhar 49

Mike Bell: Les Dawson said marriage like the war. Periods of boredom and uncertainty interspersed with bouts of hostility. Bit like today.
Well, time to put your feet up for a bit and enjoy whatever bird life floats past in a very Henry Blofeld sort of manner. Pakistan go into the tea interval in a very strong position, and could have been even stronger had Azhar Ali not departed. Moeen bowls the last over, which includes a paddle from Shafiq as well, and England trudge off. Toil, toil and more toil so far.

It was a frenetic first day, it's been calmer today. In a way, the day's cricket is yet to catch light. Pakistan, after all, took a 100-run first-innings lead at Edgbaston, but it was after that their problems started.

Out of nowhere this Oval crowd has woken up from its slumber. Finn is roared on with every ball and that puts some extra bounce into his deliveries. There's a massive cheer when the ball appears to loop off Shafiq and into the arms of a diving short leg. Big shout from the keeper as well but ball came off the pad. Bit of a let-down!

Pakistan have always had a good Test match XI, but to watch them compete so well in England has been pleasant to watch.
Pak 192-3
Younus Khan hits his 1,000th four in Test cricket, a leg glance off Woakes. What a stat to keep.
Bairstow could certainly not look out of place if he turned up at an Olympic event, all those moves he's pulling off to catch Finn's bouncers and Anderson's outswingers. Sadly, even his dive can't prevent a four to fine leg as the ball clips Shafiq's inside edge and runs away. Weirdly, the umpire gives it as four byes. Hello, what's this? A definite noise of ball on bat, backed up by a big spot on the heat thingamajig.
Great Britain have won rowing gold at the Olympics in Rio as Heather Stanning and Helen Glover defend their women's pairs title.

Perhaps more frustrating than a slowly ticking scoreboard is a maiden at this stage. At least playing strokes and going for runs opens the door for wickets a bit more. Shafiq has no problem defending a few and leaving others in this Woakes over. Bambi on ice eh? Bet he never had to face in-swingers from an England boy wonder on a hot day at The Oval.

IRD: Watching Finn bowl to Younus is hilarious, neither have any balance whatsoever. Bambi on ice would be more stable.

Pakistan will be happy with the way they've stroked the ball around, and the scoring rate has been good. The first session went well, and they've not looked back. But all eyes will be on Younus Khan, who's been jittery and jumpy. This has been a much better Younus Khan so far.

What's so hard to understand about cricket? You can appeal for lbw and be given out caught. Easy peasy! Finn gives away three, in what is quickly becoming another dull phase if you're a neutral. Although we do seem to have a fox flanked by a couple of chickens in the crowd.
Must be a mighty fine town-o.

For me, Shafiq is Pakistan's best player - the best technique. it's a big call from the captain to send him in up the order after a pair, but it's worked.
Shafiq 73, Younus 20
Even those in the crowd of an England persuasion don't look too happy about this current state of affairs. I've seen one chap who's about one annoying itch away from pulling off that Michael Phelps 'game face' everyone's raving about. See, I'm not totally about food eh? Woakes mimics Finn in trying some short stuff to Younus. But steady defence continues.

Re 14:34 the fry up. Only one egg?! Are you mad? Eggs are like slips, you need at least two.

The England cordon is not exceptional. I'm not convinced Hales is a slip fielder. But I think confidence is very important in catching. Normally you pick a team and work out who the best available catchers are, but I don't think this team is over-burdened with good slippers.
England looking more tired with each passing over that a wicket doesn't fall. Finn, with plenty of sunscreen on his cheeks, falls over - more than once - in his follow through. He did try to check Younus with a short one, but when you've got them springy feet it's easy to get on top. More frustration for the hosts.
