Hales, Vince and Ballance made 15 between them. They're the question mark. The two world-class players, Cook and Root, got themselves out. When England win usually they make runs. When they get themselves out you're not sure about the question marks.

Here's that Jonny Bairstow catch. You'll want to watch this one again and again if you're an aspiring keeper.

    Younus 132, Wahab 0

Younus continues his solid occupation of the Oval crease. Cook takes a while to attract the attention of his deep square leg, bringing him in to save the single - and as soon as he comes in, Younus pulls a four over that fielder's head to take Pakistan's score past 400.

First bat was a Gray Nicholls Elite as used by the king of the square cut Robin Smith. Even had a yellow grip put on it.

If we say the ball zipped for that Sarfraz wicket, what do we think will happen when Wahab comes on to bowl? He's got a 90mph delivery. You can't give away a 100-run lead.

Wahab Riaz is the new batsman - England will sense one end is open here, given that Wahab averages less than 10 in Test cricket. And it's time for TMS listeners to digest their first morsel of Boycott today. The right-handed Wahab is solid in defence so far, he sees off a wicket maiden.

A fantastic catch from Jonny Bairstow. It's almost done him for pace. It was full and drew Sarfraz forward. Bairstow was going the wrong way, a bit like a goalkeeper facing a Gareth Bale free-kick. But he came back and recovered brilliantly. It's just what England needed, else it was running away a bit from them.

    Sarfraz c Bairstow b Woakes 44 (Pak 397-7)

Finally a breakthrough - and it's Chris Woakes who finds the edge, Bairstow takes a great, tumbling, one-handed catch in front of Cook and Sarfraz is the man to go, six runs short of his half-century.

No sign of England turning to spin yet as Pakistan continue to plunder ones and twos against Finn, punctuated by the occasional boundary as Younus drills one through the off side.. The way with which all this chat about old bats has taken over the live text (and TMS) gives you the hint that it's steady, unspectacular progress on the field.

My first bat was an SS Jumbo which I loved, even more so when Beefy signed it for me after a match at Worcester. A few years later, my Dad discovered it In the shed, decided it was past its best and chopped it up for firewood! Needless to say I was livid, but I managed to salvage the autographed bits, which I glued together and kept to this day. My mum later wrote to Kathy Botham, who persuaded Ian to post a new signed one to me! Both are treasured items.

The last ball of Finn's over is an absolute rip-snorter, no bat on it but Bairstow has to leap high in the air to take it.

It was right in the middle of two fielders. A good delivery from Finn, a quicker bouncer and it took a top edge.

Some fans still taking their seats at The Oval - while Stuart Broad has sneaked off the field to be replaced by substitute fielder Freddie van den Burgh of the Surrey 2nd XI. Sarfraz is inching towards a half-century, while Younus gets away with a top-edged hook which flies to fine leg where Woakes takes it on the bounce.

This partnership is worth too many for England. It's developing nicely. We're going to have a bit of Moeen soon.

Edged - and wide! With two slips and a gully in for Woakes, Sarfraz edges and the ball flies through the gap where fourth or fifth slip would have been, and they run one. It's the first of three singles as Pakistan continue to grind England into the dust.
