    Target 303

Sarfraz is built for comfort not speed, so it's useful when he can hit boundaries, pulling Stokes to fine-leg to reach his fifth ODI fifty in his 64th match. It has come from 44 balls and it also brings up the 100 partnership from 93 balls.

Pakistan are going pretty nicely. So much of the game is mental. They are placed well and England have work to do.

  3. Pkn 174-3published at 28 overs

    Required run-rate 5.86

Wood replaces the beleaguered Dawson but Malik, in his 237th ODI, continues the momentum by driving a slower ball down the ground for four.

Jack Hayes: Does Liam Dawson know he's allowed to pitch the ball anywhere other than leg stump?

Jon Dunn: Dawson & Jordan have such little control. Impossible to set fields for them.

  6. Pkn 168-3published at 27 overs

    Target 303

The floodlights are taking effect now as the nights begin to close in. How many shopping days until Christmas? The required rate is under a run-a-ball for Pakistan now but their recent record is not good. In their last 19 chases of 280 or more they have won only one - against Bangladesh. Six runs easily accumulated in the Stokes over as the partnership extends to 91.

  8. Australia win ODI seriespublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 4 September 2016

Over in Pallekele, Australia have secured a 4-1 win in their ODI series in Sri Lanka after stand-in skipper David Warner's 106 guided them towards a five-wicket win with seven overs to spare in today's final match. It's some consolation for the Aussies who were whitewashed 3-0 in the Tests.

Dawson doesn't look very happy - he's taking a bit of a hammering here. Morgan might need to think about changing things at this end.

    Dawson 0-41 from 4

Thanks Stephan, pretty even indeed, England were three runs less at 146-3 after 25 overs. Dawson continues for the 26th as a persistent hunting horn chirrups into the effects microphones, he's hit for four again down the ground by Malik, who then clobbers him over mid-wicket for six.

  11. Pak 149-3published at 25 overs

    Target 303

Sarfraz, emboldened, sticks his head over the trench to Jordan, skipping to loft over extra cover for four. At the minute, it's bubbling up into a close one. England need a wicket - this stand is now worth 72. Halfway point in this chase. Here's Lord Jamie Lillywhite...

With Dawson it is worth taking him out of the attack, maybe changing ends, give him a breather, try and get a wicket with one of the seamers and then bring him back on.

  13. Pak 140-3published at 24 overs

    Target 303

Sarfraz has got the broom out to Dawson, sweeping like Trigger in Only Fools & Horses. The deep square leg fielder is the busiest man is Cardiff. A dance and swipe just evades Alex Hales at mid-wicket. Pakistan fans starting to get rowdy.

Simon Goodall: Re Porschehead (22 overs) This is Dawson's Simon Kerrigan moment.

Ste Rushton: The cranks who tweet #bbccricket, external out in force as usual slagging off a lad on debut.

  15. Pak 130-3published at 23 overs

    Malik 24, Sarfraz 27

Chris Jordan is wearing some garish spikes, flashes of luminous yellow illuminating the gloom as he runs in. Only singles for Pakistan here, following the Test plan of keep the pacers out and whack the spinners. When a boundary does come, it's entirely unintentional, via Sarfraz's inside-edge. Remember that Joe Root drop off Shoaib Malik? Watch it for yourself and see how tough a chance it was.

From the first few balls of Liam Dawson's ODI career the indication is Pakistan are going to have a go at him!

  17. Pak 124-3published at 22 overs

I get the feeling that Pakistan don't rate Liam Dawson. They are running at virtually every ball, trying to whack him out of Cardiff. Dawson asks the question against Sarfraz, deciding against the review, before Sarfraz skips to clip through mid-wicket for four.

  19. Pak 117-3published at 21 overs

    Target 303

Some very juvenile games going on between the England subs. Tymal Mills and Jake Ball sit behind Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali, who is holding a paper cup. Mills is flicking what look like sweets into the air, with Moeen trying to catch them. Is Ball now explaining the Tommy Cooper empty bag trick to Rashid? Adil looks bemused.

Robert Pearce: Ridiculous that accidentally flicking off a bail is a free hit. How about one for a bowler not tucking his shirt in too?
