Stokes lbw Shakib 85 (Eng 197-7)

Stokes' brilliant innings come to an end as he is trapped bang in front while attempting to sweep Shakib. Interestingly, Woakes seems to be encouraging to review it but Stokes opts against it. He clearly thinks he is out. What an innings, though.

The 'feel-like' temperature today has been 41 degrees, which shows you how hot it's been for Ben Stokes out there.

Charlie Johnston: Stokes goes in for lunch, a quick bite then goes out and has a net. Now on 70 odd not out. No coincidence.

Daniel Reed: People say Stokes only scores easy runs, they are only easy runs because of how simple he makes it look.

Andy Cooper: Can't work out if Woakes & Stokes sound like a 1970s TV comic double act, a cash & carry outlet or a firm of country solicitors.

  4. Eng 197-6published at 64 overs

    Stokes 85, Woakes 1

Woakes almost chips a catch to short mid-wicket but is fortunate as the ball drifts just over the fielder's head. It gets him off the mark with a single.

Stokes is seeing it big now. He steps across and forward and punches the ball powerfully to leg but is denied a boundary by the man at mid-on.

Bangladesh are a bit more interested now. They go up for an lbw against a sweeping Stokes but the umpire isn't interested. Stokes really has been the Tigers' nemesis today. He rocks back and plants a short ball from Shakib into the stand.

The shadows are very long on the pitch. The head of the man at short cover is just poking on to the track.

Chris Woakes joins Stokes and sees off the rest of Kamrul's over.

Is it too late for Bangladesh? I would say to listen to the applause for Jonny Bairstow as he walks off, but there won't be one. At Lord's, they'd be rising from their seats. But not here.

    Bairstow b Kamrul 47 (Eng 189-6)

That is a shame. Jonny Bairstow deserved a half-century for the way he has helped stage England's recovery. Kamrul has his first Test wicket as the wicketkeeper looks to steer the ball to third man and instead chops on to his own stumps. Is this too little, too late for the home side?

Ben Wire: Exciting stuff. Might spinning wickets woo Test cricket's detractors? Do seam wickets create a risk of boring cricket?

  10. Eng 183-5published at 61 overs

    Bairstow 42, Stokes 77

England are now picking off Shakib - their chief tormentor from earlier. Bairstow is on to a short ball and pushes through mid-wicket for four. The pursuing fielder offers a dramatic dive but is nowhere near the ball. He must be the only man in the ground who thought he still had a chance of stopping that.

Stokes and Bairstow have got Bangladesh on toast at the moment - they have resorted to a one-day field with four men on the boundary and five men on the edge of the circle.

Kamrul is charging in but it is like jousting with a draft excluder. He chucks one down on leg that deflects off Stokes' pad and skips away to the boundary at fine leg.

With the lead already over 200, the sages will say 'oh we need at least 300'! But when two good batsmen get in it's another wonderful fluctuation in this match because, by and large, the batsmen have struggled throughout.

After some much-needed drinks and a good towel down by Stokes and Bairstow, Shakib continues. Bairstow misses out with a sweep that fortunately lands safe, short of short leg.

Despite the heat and the length of the time they have been at the crease, these two are still keen for a quick single, which they nab following a little tap to the off side by Stokes.

It's been very noticeable over the last 3-4 years, even against Australia, that both sides would often lose five wickets for less than 100 against the new ball, but would then recover as it got older.

This has become almost habitual, though of course more unexpected when spin not seam takes the new ball.

Stokes has played superbly and, slightly in his shadow, Bairstow has been very good as well. At 62-5 this game was firmly in the balance but the whole complexion has changed. Stokes has accelerated but he did the hard yards to start with, he has paced the innings beautifully.

England are taming the tigers. One fella, painted head to toe (I'm assuming) in the yellow/black stripes of the big cat, sits glumly, his head resting on his hand. I know that look well. You see all around Wembley every time the England football team play and on my face whenever my girlfriend suggests a weekend trip to a certain Swedish furniture shop.

What can Kamrul do? He can go for a couple of singles in another easily managed over by England.

Nick Hall: Ben Stokes looking for consistency and a long injury-free run to become one of England's best.

Bloody Bishop: Ben Stokes getting wickets as a seamer, hitting 50 on this wicket and as a ginger in that heat! Unbelievable.

Harry Wood: Seems very unfair/poor planning that England's two gingers are holding the fort in the Bangladesh heat. Great performance.

  20. Eng 166-5published at 57 overs

    Stokes 72, Bairstow 34

I think the only thing these Bangladesh fans like anywhere near as much as cricket is the prospect that they might appear on the telly. The very sniff of a camera lens turns them into teenagers at a One Direction gig. An untroubled England take Shakib for a couple of singles.
