  1. Eng 98-5published at 41 overs

    Stokes 28, Bairstow 12

Still plenty of high-pitched, excitable screams from the fielders whenever the ball bounces off the pads to a sweep shot but just the single results for Stokes in the Taijul over.

Bairstow punches a full toss from Shakib but it goes straight to mid-on. Despite a mis-field, and Jonny's undoubted frustration at not smashing it for four, the batsmen decide against a run, after a brief moment of worrying mid-pitch indecision.

Kamrul bowled the ball in from the deep there as if to remind his captain he is available. If he does get a bowl I suspect Bangladesh will be getting desperate.

  4. Eng 97-5published at 39 overs

    England lead by 142

Stokes clips Taijul and the batsmen race through for two. A Bairstow single takes the partnership to 35. Insistent cries of "Bangladesh, Bangladesh" come from the patriotic crowd sheltering from the sweltering sun. They are not stopping with it.

My guess at this stage is that England need to double their lead, at least. Even at around 240, I would probably make Bangladesh slight favourites - 270 and England should do it. But that's a VERY long way off...!

  6. Eng 93-5published at 38 overs

    England lead by 138

Bairstow, full of intent as always with his bat above his shoulders as the bowler approaches, sweeps Shakib for just the third four of the session. It would have been interesting had he missed it but it comes firmly out of the middle of the blade.

Thomas Measures: The batsmen may disagree but for me this test match has been one of the best this year. Very intense and both teams still in it.

  8. Eng 89-5published at 37 overs

    England lead by 134

Stokes makes no contact with a sweep and then a reverse sweep, but calmly plays out the rest of the over from Taijul and the players take a well-earned drinks break.

I have been very impressed by Stokes, who has been very disciplined. You don't often think of Ben as a similar player, but he is reminding me here of Graham Thorpe. He had great concentration, picking off singles. I remember he batting for a long time against Murali in Sri Lanka.

  10. Eng 89-5published at 36 overs

Shakib, looking a little weary after 18 overs without a break, I wouldn't be able to move for a week, but he is still impressively accurate, although occasionally drops short and this allows both England batsmen to collect singles.

Mushfiqur hasn't got Sabbir to bowl the occasional leg break. His options are a bit limited. But it is his trio of spinners that have done most of the bowling. Shakib has bowled all the way through so far.

  12. Eng 87-5published at 35 overs

    England lead by 132

Taijul beats Bairstow with a beautiful turning delivery past the outside edge but the Yorkshireman regains his composure and grinds out another run with a sweep.

Stephen McCormack: Yet again England batsmen showing why more tour matches are needed before the Tests. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!!

  14. Eng 86-5published at 34 overs

    Stokes 23, Bairstow 5

Shakib's 17th consecutive over and just a single from it, worked away to leg by the industrious Bairstow, the partnership extending to 24.

Stokes continues his mission for man-of-the-match, sweeping Taijul over square-leg for only the third six of the match.

hlc1221: How Ballance continues to get in the team despite lack of runs and huge deficiencies against spin I have no clue.

Fred Nerk: Batsmen throwing away all the work done by the bowlers - yet again the bowlers will have to save the match by batting.

Russell Anderson: Biggest problem with the England national team is the selectors. Ballance and Batty shouldn't be anywhere near this team.

  19. Eng 79-5published at 32 overs

    England lead by 124

Still it is Shakib for his 16th over and England pick up five penalty runs when the ball scuttles through the legs of Mushfiqur up to the stumps and hits the spare helmet behind the wicketkeeper. Imagine if those five runs are the difference in the match.
