Stuart Foster: This is the England we know and love. Bowlers having to dig England out of the mire with ball AND bat.

Allen Cooper: A lot of people jumping on the bandwagon against Ballance, no-one mentioning others that have failed...

Guy D'Oyly: If Cook and Root are our class players yet 8/10 times it is left to the middle order surely something isn't right.

Ben Stokes can do no wrong today, a reverse sweep is perfectly executed at Mehedi and it brings him four runs to backward point, the first boundary since the 16th over.

From the moment Mehedi took the first wicket and opened with spin this game has not gone as we expected. It has been gripping stuff.

    Stokes 11, Bairstow 2

Slingy Shakib continues, Stokes down the wicket, but unlike his counterpart he realises the ball is not there to be hit and he calmly plays defensively. There is soon one to turn for a single. Nelson alert, the lead is 111.

Jonny Bairstow has now scored 1,046 runs at 74.71 this calendar year, taking him past Andy Flower as the wicket-keeper with the most runs in a calendar year.

He has a chance to break the England record for runs in a calendar year by any player, which is 1,481 scored by Michael Vaughan in 2002.

  7. Eng 64-5published at 29 overs

    England lead by 109

Mehedi, round the wicket to the right-handed Bairstow, has a slip, leg gully and short-leg but Bairstow clips a single to mid-wicket taking him to 1,046 runs for the calendar year and above Andy Flower's record for a wicketkeeper.

Michelle Garland: Is there anything more reassuring than to wake up to the news of a England batting collapse?

Richard Sumption: Hameed for Ballance, Ansari for Broad. Two easy decisions for the second Test.

  9. Eng 63-5published at 28 overs

    Shakib 3-30 off 14

Jonny Bairstow is the new man and he gets a superb delivery first up, it spins away significantly but fortunately misses both outside edge and off-stump. The much-maligned sweep is brought out to the next ball, however, and Jonny is away with a single.

Barry Eastwood: Another dismissal to a sweep shot. How about the England players agree to stop playing the shot

That was an excellent catch. Mushfiqur has to delay it. He was naturally falling forward but delayed it when the ball popped up and he made the last minute adjustment. This lead is decent but these are nervous times.

Shakib has taken three wickets now. Like a puppy that has widdled on the carpet, he is starting to become more popular after that shot first thing to get out early this morning.

All over for Moeen. Again it's the sweep and Mushfiqur, who had started to appeal for lbw, is alert to dive forward as it came off the back of the bat after brushing the pad and he snaffles the chance. The lead is 107 but half of the England innings is back in the hutch.

  14. In defence of Ballancepublished at 08:39 British Summer Time 22 October 2016

It's very easy to get on Ballance's case, but compare him to Moeen even just in this match. Ballance: out on review LBW. Moeen: in because Bangladesh chose not to review when he'd have been out. Today: Moeen caught in the leg trap fending, reprieved because the fielder juggled. Ballance: out caught sweeping straight to leg slip.

He's had a lot of bad fortune and scored a crucial 70 at Edgbaston two games ago. He deserves at least as long a run as Vince got!

He's done exactly that, Athar and Mehedi immediately produces a beauty that spins past the outside edge of a hesitant Stokes prod. But there are singles to be gleaned, with just the backward point and silly mid-off close in on the off-side and both England batsmen take them.

With two left-handers at the crease, Mushfiqur should consider using Mehedi just to get the ball moving away from the batsmen.

Josh Davies: Have to question the selection of Ballance, a batsman known for not moving his feet in these tricky, turning conditions!

Calum Macleod: Hameed has the temperament. Duckett the flair. Ballance has no part to play in the brave new England.

Andrew Whitefield: At least Ballance is consistent.

Shakib again and he is on his knees in frustration as a Stokes inside edge off the back foot goes into his pad rather than the stumps as the bowler would have preferred. The England all-rounder collects another run into leg-side. There have been 10 overs since the last boundary but every little helps, as they say.

Stokes keeps the strike with a confident push down to long-on off Taijul. The field is a curious mix between those clustered around the bat and those protecting the boundaries.
