Tom Potter: Gary Ballance is just dead wood to this team, what does he actually do? Much rather have seen Hameed in the team.

Simon Terry: Death, taxes and Ballance caught at leg slip.

Matt Wilkinson: Might as well play with 10 batters!! Ballance's England career is in the balance!

  3. Eng 55-4published at 23 overs

    Moeen 11, Stokes 6

A forceful shot off the back foot from Stokes off Taijul and they scamper through for three, which must feel like running six in this heat. Moeen gets the reverse sweep out, imagine if he got out to that, but it goes along the ground to backward point. No panic yet. The England lead reaches 100.

There was always the threat that wickets would fall today. The third day is often seen as the moving day. You start to wonder what England will consider enough to win the game? You have to be looking up to 200.

  5. Eng 50-4published at 22 overs

    England lead by 95

Shakib, round the wicket to the left-handers, has three men round the bat on the leg-side, a short-leg, a leg gully and a silly mid-on. There is also a conventional square-leg. Moeen is still going to play the sweep but he gets one outside off-stump that he can work through the covers for two.

It has been a tough job for the third umpire. Nobody is sure of how the pitch is behaving at times. It has turned, bounced and also stayed a bit low.

Stokes is away with a nonchalant single to long-on as the trial by by slow left-arm continues from Taijul.

  10. Eng 46-4published at 20 overs

    Moeen 9, Stokes 0

A maiden from Shakib, calmly defended by Moeen, who no doubts feels he has to drop anchor for England in these circumstances. Another innings of 68 would be very timely.

Ballance finds a lot of ways of getting caught at leg slip. It was almost off the face of the bat although he didn't quite middle it. It got to the man at knee-height at a good pace. Once again, Ballance has to go. This game... you just don't know which way it is going to go. A lot depends on Moeen and Stokes now.

Joshua Scott: Bye bye Gary Ballance's England career - you, my friend, are simply not good enough.

Jamie Holmes: Don't know what Ballance brings to the team.

It was a successful bowling change, another slow left-armer Taijul, who took two wickets in the first innings, having immediate success. Smart catch too, it was travelling and he was only a few yards from the bat. Stokes defends the remaining deliveries solidly.

So much for a steady period of accumulation, Ballance is smartly caught at leg slip playing the ubiquitous sweep. Bowling hero Ben Stokes, who had no doubt been hoping to put his feet up for a while, is having to come to the crease already.

    Shakib 2-23 off 9

Moeen advances down the wicket with a Shakib-style lunge at Shakib himself but it hits the pad and falls to safety. A maiden, only the third of the innings.

The way England play spinners does not appear to have moved on much over the past few years. Still far too many batsmen pick the sweep shot as the default method of attack and run-scoring. On a turning pitch with (especially) variable bounce and DRS it is not a good option. They should be looking to hit down the ground with not against the spin and a straight bat. This has plagued us for years since the Duncan Fletcher era, exacerbated by the advent of T20.

The slight figure of 18-year-old Mehedi continues, he too has three men around the bat but for the moment there is calm, both England batsmen collecting singles.

  20. Eng 44-3published at 16 overs

Ballance restores order, picking up four with a well played sweep off Shakib. The sweep can't be banished, it's still an effective scoring stroke.
