Haseeb Hameed, mark his name selectors and you dare fiddle with his talent because he will surely be here for a long time. I am from India but ever since Graham Thorpe I have not seen an English batsman with so much anticipation.

  2. Eng 92-0published at 30 overs

    lead by 141 runs

Cook, the previous youngest England batsman to make fifty on debut, solidly plays out a maiden to Ashwin. He was 21 then. I feel about a thousand years old.

  3. England Women on course for winpublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

Sri Lanka 95-4 (30 overs), Eng Women 295 all out

Meanwhile, England's Women look in complete control in Colombo. The hosts are still 200 runs shy of England's score with two wickets apiece for Laura Marsh and Danielle Hazel.

  4. 'Hameed is a proper player'published at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

He has done everything, from being able to defend sensibly and then when he has looked to attack he has stroked with precision and timing. He looks like a proper player.

  5. Eng 92-0published at 29 overs

    Cook 37, Hameed 53

Mishra rips one past the outside edge of Hameed but England survive. There are eight overs left to face today.

  6. When Haseeb met Sir Garrypublished at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

We're been doing a little digging on Haseeb Hameed's Twitter feed. Some call it stalking... anyway, here he is with a former great of the game: Sir Garfield Sobers...

  7. 50 runs

50 for Hameedpublished at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

Half-century for Hameed and he does it in style with a deft cut shot to the boundary. It has taken him 94 balls and it has been a pleasure to watch. Tears from his father watching on.

  8. Postpublished at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

And here's what Haseeb Hameed thinks of Virat Kohli. He tweeted this in March... now he's sharing the same field of play.

  9. Eng 84-0published at 28 overs

    lead by 134 runs

It's testimony to Hameed's accomplished style of play that India felt so desperate to review that one. He checks his guard, another sign of his assured nature, and emphatically blocks the final ball.

  10. Not out - Hameed on 48published at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

It hits him on the thigh pad. It is missing off stump by a distance. As you were.

  11. Umpire reviewpublished at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

Slight concern here. Hameed does not play a shot but he is given not out. Too high? An increasingly anxious India team ask for a review.

  12. Eng 83-0published at 27 overs

    Cook 34, Hameed 48

Hameed, luminous green strips on his gloves matching the panels on his bat, calmly keeps out the threat of leg-spin from Amit Mishra and remains two short of a well-deserved maiden Test fifty in only his second innings.

Word from the England camp is that Cook is fit and well and in India's innings he came off the field for a number of comfort breaks for 'refueling' and 'quick chats.'

  15. Eng 82-0published at 26 overs

    lead by 131 runs

Ashwin back into the attack, with a slip and a short leg waiting for a chance, but there is nothing on offer from the assured Hameed, who rocks back and strokes the ball stylishly off the back foot for his fourth four to go with his six. Two short of fifty.

Hameed just looks like he's got something about him. When I was 19 I was playing in the Yorkshire second division.

  17. Eng 77-0published at 25 overs

    Cook 32, Hameed 44

Both openers collect singles off Yadav. There are 12 overs left in the day, but the shadows are already stretching across the outfield.

  18. Eng 75-0published at 24 overs

    lead by 124 runs

Shami again and singles for both England batsmen as they move towards a century partnership. The last one was only last month...when all 10 wickets then fell for 64 runs...

Hameed looks like he was born to play Test cricket. Haven't enjoyed watching a youngster learning his trade so much since Joe Root came into the team. Wonderful temperament, technique, confidence and who said he scores slowly?

Two more to the young pup Hameed, working Yadav into the leg side. There are elements of Mike Atherton about the teenager too, another Lancashire opener.
