  1. Eng 45-0published at 13 overs

Ashwin, from round the wicket, spins one back into the right-handed Hameed and it zips past the outside edge. But the young man is still there and the England lead is 94.

Danny, Bradford: Missed the first few days but fantastic to see England won by 49 runs.. What? Sorry that was just one innings each? But this is day four!!

  3. Eng 42-0published at 12 overs

    Cook 13, Hameed 28

Two more for Hameed, steering Jadeja delicately past slip for two.

Even the best players in the world - which Cook is one of - take time to adapt when the pitch is doing something.

  5. Eng 40-0published at 11 overs

    lead by 89 runs

Ashwin is rattling through the overs, unlike England during that afternoon session. One hesitates to say Cook is looking more settled and he calmly plays out a maiden.

Arjun Sohanpal:  Hameed just looks like the perfect opener to partner Cook, regardless of how many he makes.

Stuart Mitchell: The more you see of Hameed, both for Lancashire and now England, he looks the part. And only 19 years old. Impressive.

  7. Eng 40-0published at 10 overs

    Cook 13, Hameed 26

The Lancastrian demonstrates his compact defensive range and keeps out the threat of Jadeja. He was born in January 1997. The Titanic film was not even released until December of that year. He is destined to get England out of a few hazardous situations over the next few years.

What a lovely shot. Look at the stride... beautiful. He is putting the rubbish to the boundary.

  9. Eng 39-0published at 9 overs

Successive boundaries for the teenager Hameed against Ashwin, a late cut followed by a perfect cover drive. The young man has skilful, supple wrists. Have England found a pinball wizard?

  10. Eng 31-0published at 8 overs

    Cook 12, Hameed 18

Hameed collects a five when his quick single off Jadeja prompts a shy at the stumps and it trickles away for four overthrows.

Ravichandran Ashwin has opened the bowling 20 times in Test cricket. On 10 of those occasions he's gone on to take five-wicket hauls. The only time Ravi Jadeja has opened before he took five wickets.

  12. Eng 26-0published at 7 overs

    lead by 75 runs

The first look at Ashwin. He made 70 earlier today and now he looks to add to his 222 Test wickets. There are five men crowded round the bat but both batsmen collect singles, Hameed racing through off the final ball, really looking the part.

People who say Hameed is a blocker are talking tripe. He scored so many runs for Lancashire last year, he must have hit the ball somewhere. He's a careful player. That shot came from nowhere.

Hameed is built like a snooker cue but he times the ball beautifully and he takes a step down the pitch to Jadeja, a lovely high backlift and clean hit down the ground for six of the best. The TV cameras pick out Geoffrey as if to question those comparisons with the the new England opening batsman.

Micheal Allen: Prediction: England 61-7 at the close.

Andrew Pitt: To win this England have to score at least 120 by close and declare at 300 start of 2nd session day 5. Then hope for good spin

Jerry Chester: Just put 50-3 on the scoreboard now and save the England top three the walk to the crease.

  18. Eng 14-0published at 4 overs

    lead by 63 runs

A plethora of India fielders in mirrored sun glasses are gathered around the bat. Cook deflects one neatly for four but Jadeja then gets one to spit off the surface and it catches Cook's gloves, but with the India fielders leaping in excitement at the prospect of a wicket, it loops over short leg to safety.
