I would like to see a little more energy from England. If you have aspirations to win a Test you would want to get the overs in.
England have to wary of slipping into a malaise, of waiting for this last wicket to fall. At the moment, Ashwin is doing a good job of farming the strike and chipping away at the lead. A back-foot drive for four off Rashid is the shot of a man toying with the field. Noise levels in Rajkot have cranked up. India know they are only one England collapse from a shot at winning this.

I'm wondering if Cook is not very well because he has been off the field quite a bit today and he normally takes everything at slip.

What a shot this is. Short ball from Broad, Ashwin leaning back to ramp the ball over a leaping Jonny Bairstow. Ashwin is scoring runs, could open the bowling, will probably mark the pitch and serve tea during the interval. This last-wicket stand is worth 17. Cook dropped Shami when it was worth one.

Rashid is not going to bowl teams out quickly, you won't find a Shane Warne. Most leg-spinners are a little expensive, but they can be quite vital.

Rashid is looking to wrap up the innings and claim a second Test Michelle Pfeiffer. He won't do it with this sort of long-hop, gifting Ashwin the opportunity to pull for four. That's the worst ball the Rashid has bowled for a long time. Useful runs, every one a bonus following that Cook drop off Shami.

Ashwin's third fifty against England and he averages 57 against them in 11 innings.
Ind 462-9
The lad from Lancashire, Our Ashwin, has played a lovely hand today. England looked like they could have run through the India batting this morning, but the all-rounder has guided the ship. A seventh Test half-century comes up with a dab to third man. His work, though, will really begin when he gets the ball in the second innings.
Ind 461-9
Oh, skipper. Where's your head at? This is about as straightforward a slip catch as you will see, but Alastair Cook has shelled it. Edge from Shami, heading for Cook's crown jewels, the skipper grassing the ball. Already thinking about batting? If he'd caught that, he'd be putting the mums and dads on now.

Rashid 29-1-94-4
Does Ravichandran Ashwin stick or twist. On 49, he has only Mohammed Shami for company and can't pinch the strike, so now must watch the number 11 take on Stuart Broad. When England do come to bat, what's the plan? Do they still think they can win this? I suspect it will be 'normal' batting for the rest of the day and have a look in the morning. In the first match of a series, I doubt we'll see a generous declaration.

There were three beautiful leg-spinners before the wicket. They bounced a bit, turned a bit and it gets in your head. He was thinking he was going to get out and he had a whack at it. Nice catch from Stokes, he's always alert.
Yadav c Stokes b Rashid 5 (Ind 459-9)
Lovely leg-break bowling by Adil Rashid, too good for Umesh Yadav, who is beaten three times so decides the cross-batted swipe is the best course of action. It isn't, and a top edge is taken by a diving Ben Stokes, who has to come in from cover. India nine down, England one away from having a bat, Rashid looking like a Test-quality leggie.

As captain of my village 2nd XI I would walk out for the toss wearing an umpires' coat with deep pockets. If the opposing captain did not ask to see the ball first I was in. One pocket contained a shiny new ball the other a relatively battered one. It depended on their toss which one I produced for the start of play.

A single takes Ashwin to 49, with England then closing in on Yadav. This is a man who only averages eight with the bat, so they shouldn't expect him to dish out the humpty. At the end of the over, the field spreads in the hope that Yadav will be tempted to keep the strike, a gift the number 10 accepts. Ballsy.
England Women 223-5 (38 overs)
Natalie Sciver's quickfire 51 (27 balls) has come to an end but England will still be looking to a post a big score in their second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Hameed is the fourth England player to take three catches on debut. The first one was Thomas Emmett in the first Test match in 1877. Paul Collingwood was the most recent.
Rashid 28-1-93-3
Rashid has got more bounce than perhaps any other spinner in the match. Jadeja couldn't ride it and the ball took the shoulder of the bat. Is the pitch starting to do more for the spinners? Might Aswhin cause some havoc? Umesh Yadav is the new man, announcing his arrival by belting a slog-sweep for four.

It came back and it bounced. A very similar ball to the one that got Vijay out. It surprised him with the bounce. A 60-70--run lead would be a good effort but I don't think it will be enough to win. Either side would have to play really, really badly to lose.
