The lbw didn't look out, but the following ball wasn't there to cut. He has to be very careful. He's very experienced and should know better than that. It's poor judgement.

It's spin from the other end, with the slow left-arm of Jadeja. Cook does not look comfortable, he is hit on the pad, which replays show would have been umpire's call, then gets a bottom edge. Surely he is experienced enough not to have drunk the local water, but he does not look himself, though he gets off the mark with a single.

I admire the positive aspect Rich, but England have gone with Cook and Hameed, who could be the opening pair for a few years. Cook was off the field for a while and dropped a catch, leading to speculation he might be unwell, but he is ok to take the first ball. Hameed opens his account by clipping a low Shami full toss to the square leg fence.

Rich Robinson: Root and Stokes to open second innings to try and score big and fast with Cook and Ali at three and four to settle in if it fails? Or does this show my lack of cricket knowledge?

Assuming that there will not be another chance to see Shami leathering it again with the bat (no harm in hearing that again is there?) he is the only player in the match not to have made a first-class century. There has only been one Test where the entire 22 players have all scored one and that was in 1905. It could never really have happened with the England tail for the much of the 1990s.

Thanks Stephan, I pride myself on my tea and coffee making. Nothing else. Well you could sense the spirits draining from England during that final wicket partnership of 29, which probably felt like 229 when you have been out in the field in extreme heat for more than 160 overs.

Most people expect a draw but perhaps it's time to regurgitate that stat about only three teams losing having posted more than 537 in the first innings in the 139-year history of Test cricket.

England lost one of those, that memorable Ashes match in Adelaide in December 2006.

England Women 295 all out (50.0 overs)

England's women are also in action this morning. They're facing Sri Lanka in Colombo, where a win will see them qualify for the 2017 World Cup.

And they will be in confident mood during the interval after 50's from Lauren Winfield, Heather Knight, and a superb quickfire knock from Natalie Sciver.

    Full scorecard here.

I think that's the best I have seen Adil Rashid bowl for England. He had runs behind him, but he showed some great control.

It was a tremendous innings from Ashwin, he timed the ball right from the word go and what a wonderful all-round cricketer he is now, a very intelligent cricketer in all he does. It wouldn't entirely surprise me if he opened the bowling from this end.

That's tea, by the way. England will come out to bat after the interval. I doubt it will be dull.

Are we at the stage where only India can win this match? I just can't see England getting far enough ahead quickly enough to have the luxury of declaring. Swift wickets would have the tourists is reasonable amounts of myther. I think the neutral would like to seem them about 110-5 at the close. That would set tomorrow up deliciously.

There's 37 overs left tonight. That's a lot of cricket. What we have seen is that when the spinners are bowling from a certain end, there's more going on. And if India get some early wickets, we've seen that the tail falls quickly. I don't think anybody will be writing this off as a draw yet. We could have England being bowled out or we could have England mulling over a declaration tomorrow. There's still possibilities.

Finally, Ravichandran Ashwin's fine knock and the India innings is over. It's good bowling from Moeen Ali, who cramps him from round the wicket, inducing the big shot that is held by Zafar Ansari at deep mid-wicket. India are all out for 488 and trail by 49 runs.

As a young lad I used to score for Old Town second XI when my dad played for them. He was a modest batsmen, never really in the runs so I always added a few of the total to his score, mainly leg byes and wides so not really cheating. He's still proud of his one and only fifty and I've never let on to anything for him to think otherwise.

    Ashwin 70, Shami 8

England try something new, bringing Ben Stokes into the attack. Stokes and Ashwin have exchanged some words today - some friendly, some not so. He's trundling a little, Stokes, looking a bit leggy. There's barely a fielder in Ashwin's postcode, with the number six then able to dink a single over the top when it converges at the end of the over. Momentum is shifting.
