Andrew Pitt: Maybe a little to early to ask but who is the youngest player to hit a 100 against India? And who for England?

The youngest ever player to hit 100: Mohammad Ashraful, at 17 years and 61 days, for Bangladesh v Sri Lanka (2001)

The youngest player to hit 100 against India: Mushtaq Mohammad, at 17 years and 78 days, for Pakistan v India (1961)

The youngest player to hit 100 for England: Denis Compton, 20 years and 18 days, against Australia (1938)

But yes, a bit premature there. We all know about the curse. Thanks to Kal Sajad for the stats there.

Stuart Broad's glamorous blonde girlfriend Bealey is watching on next to England supremo Andrew Strauss. Shami bowls a maiden over, in the cricketing sense.

May I suggest that the twitterati suggesting England 50-3 and 61-7 could be wrong?

There have been some remarkable scenes involving a table tennis ball, but that's a very different matter. A waiter bringing drinks to the crowd disrupts the batsmen and causes a delay, but eventually Yadav bowls a maiden and it will be drinks on the field as well as off it.

    Cook 29, Hameed 40

England have blunted the spinners so Shami shuffles in for another spell, after just two overs for six runs in his first. Hameed clips two into the leg side and moves within 10 of a maiden Test fifty.

All of the other opening batsman England have put on parade, as a former opening bowler I have seen weaknesses in their game. But there's nothing obvious about Hameed's game. He looks very solid and composed.

Yadav again and the big man is cut stylishly by the slender Hameed for two more.

  9. Day four summary so farpublished at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

A reminder of the story of the day. India resumed on 319-4 and lost the big wickets of Rahane and Kohli in the first hour, the captain treading on his stumps as he played back to spinner Rashid, who went on to take four wickets.

Ashwin made 70, putting on 64 with Saha and then 29 for the final wicket with Shami before India were all out for 488 on the stroke of tea, a first innings deficit of 49.

Hameed has made a big impression on me. That long search for an opener looks to be over. I'm purring - he's played three or four shots which have been perfection. He'd only hit one six before in his career - a hook shot off a fast bowler, Toby Roland-Jones. It was one of those moments where your eyes pop and you think 'Hang on, there's something a bit special here'. I bet in the dressing room, Trevor Bayliss will be looking on with more interest than ever.

A small contingent of England followers dressed in white cricket shirts look on, enjoying the purposeful start from the openers. Calmly collected singles again in the Jadeja over.

England's plan will be to bat tonight, and into tomorrow morning. The big question for me is how much Alastair Cook trusts his spinners if a declaration came into the equation.

  13. Eng 62-0published at 17 overs

    Cook 27, Hameed 34

The burly seamer Yadav returns and a classic Cook pull shot brings the England captain his third boundary, into position early and helping the ball round behind square.

Ray Roughmoose, Devon: Hameed has scoring shots of 6,5,4,2 and 1. When he hits a 3 how many Test openers will have bingo'd?

Comfortable progress, two singles for each batsman in the Jaedja over.

  16. Over in Colombo ...published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2016

Sri Lanka 44-0 (12 overs), England Women 295 all out

Sri Lanka's women have made a slow but steady start in reply to England's 295. A win for England will see them qualify for next year's World Cup, which will be taking place on home soil between 26 June-23 July.

  17. Eng 52-0published at 15 overs

    Cook 20, Hameed 31

An edge from Cook flies past the knee of the wicketkeeper but short of slip. Cook then collects his second boundary as Ashwin drops short, he pulls it away to mid-wicket to bring up the 50 partnership and take the lead into three figures.

For a 19-year-old who is on the back of just one full season with Lancashire, this is a real test - but one which Haseeb Hameed is coming through well. He's nicknamed 'Baby Boycott' but I'm not sure Geoffrey ever slotted a six to double his score.

  19. Eng 47-0published at 14 overs

    lead by 96 runs

Hameed pinches the bowling with another stylish stroke off the back foot for a single off Jadeja and he has reached 30 for the second time in his debut Test.
