Haseeb Hameed isn't daft, is he? Blow to the finger, don't field, just bat. That's how you play Test cricket. Still the blond-haired Batty, twinkling in and delivering the ball with a grunt. There's chirp from Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps, but England are suffering death by a thousand cuts.

This has been one of the most responsible innings I've seen from Jadeja. He's knuckled down to the task. Yesterday showed what he can do when he applies himself. This has been the first time he's faced 100 balls in a Test.

Once again, England eschew the option of bowling James Anderson at the start of a session. It was Chris Woakes first thing this morning, it's Woakes again after lunch. Why not Jimmy? Jayant Yadav, one of the best number nines I've ever seen, puffs out his cheeks and drives for a single via a Ben Stokes misfield. Woakes then continues to hang the ball outside Jadeja's off stump, with Ravi not interested.

Haseeb Hameed batted before play, didn't field during the morning, then batted again at lunch. England are clearly trying to work out if he can open the batting. I find it strange - his finger is either broken or it isn't. If it's just bruised he should be fielding.

Why do off-spinners now always bowl round the wicket to right-handers? It's a fashion, isn't it? Like beards, craft gin or pulled pork. I blame Nathan Lyon. There's no turn for Batty, he's bowling straight-breaks. Little happening, India continue to show how many runs should be scored on this pitch.

The players are back out, England now into a fifth session in the field. Ravi Jadeja is on strike, Gareth Batty has the ball (really). England need something to happen quickly.

Glued to TMS while soothing my baby back to sleep at Brompton Hospital in Chelsea. Commentary from India a very welcome exotic distraction but we could all do with three more down!

I'm wondering which city would provide the best XI if it came down to a scrap. My Stoke-on-Trent side would include Sydney Barnes, David Steele, Bob Taylor, Dominic Cork and Kim Barnett. That's probably not matching up to the Bradford XI, mind.

I make it 15 or 16. Bob Appleyard, David Bairstow, Gareth Batty, Don Brennan, Arthur Dolphin, Richard Illingworth, Jim Laker, Frank Lowson, Anthony McGrath, Doug Padgett, Steven Rhodes, Phil Sharpe, Abe Waddington, Arthur Wood and Johnny Bairstow and possibly Craig White depending whether you regard Morley as Leeds or Bradford. A decent squad for one city, but 6 wicketkeepers seems unusual!

There's been some chat about how there are three Bradford-born players in this England side - Batty, Rashid and Bairstow.

    I'm going somewhere with this...

Couldn't sleep so going in to work a couple of hours early. About to get on the Tube at Bethnal Green. Please can we be batting when I resurface as Shepherd's Bush?

India scored 83 runs in the morning session, losing only Ashwin when he outside edged a Stokes delivery to the lurking Buttler at backward point. Other than that it's been a slow march towards a three figure lead from India.

Jadeja, making his third Test half-century, has been well supported by Jayant, who looks a more than capable bat. England look flat. It's a good batting pitch, offering their bowlers pretty much nothing. That will, of course, all change when they come to bat.

It does as if the pitch has behaved very well. You can't fault England for effort. Their bowlers have done everything they can, but can't get anything.
