An lbw shout! It feels like an age since anyone made any noise that wasn't a disappointed groan. That delivery from Rashid is sliding well down leg, however, and so Jayant will continue.

These are familiar problems for England. Jadeja is showing a lot of restraint now. If they bowl wide, he'll leave it. Jayant is very composed.

There's ooh's from behind the stumps as Jayant leaves one that just bounces above the bails, but it's another quiet over from Stokes. England look flat. Gareth Batty readjusts his sun hat down on the boundary rope, preparing himself for a long day in the sun.

Short, pulled, four. Thank you very much, says Jayant. It was a poor ball from Rashid yesterday that sparked India's tumble of wickets, but that was hit comfortably over mid-on. Rashid shakes his head and returns to bowling a little fuller, which keeps Jayant defending.

Stokes and Cook have a long chat before the seamer returns, sticking to bowling wide of off stump and keeping the batsmen quiet. In fact that's almost sarcastically wide from Stokes, and he's twice signalled by the umpire, which doesn't best please him. He's some way away from Geoffrey's corridor of uncertainty.

Chris Elliott: Just boarded the 4:57 train from Bristol to London Paddington for my Monday commute. This makes the trip more palatable.

Nick Brooks: At home in Letchworth Garden City. Tuned in just in time for the 7th wicket, now we need the other 3 asap!

    Jadeja 58, Jayant 17

These two aren't taking any unnecessary risks. The boundaries that have been hit have had plenty of power behind them, making sure that they clear the fielders. The singles have been safe, the running good so far. It's just a good pitch to bat on. Rashid fizzes through another over, Jayant and Jadeja happy to trade singles.

This is Jadeja's third Test fifty and his second against England. In this home season in India he's averaging 47.20 with the bat in Tests.

A clever punch down the pitch brings Jadeja another boundary and Anderson a mouthful of turf as he dives despairingly, trying to keep the ball in. This outfield has been so quick. Cook and Bairstow stand like mirror images of each other. Arms folded, unimpressed look firmly on their faces.

It's been a reminder of what a good pitch this is, and the outfield is so fast. It emphasises how disappointing England's first innings was.

Rashid appears for his first bowl of the day and Jadeja pounces when he drops too short. A single helps him to his third Test half-century, which he celebrates by brandishing his bat like a sword. He swishes and slashes it around, a big grin on his face as the dressing room applauds.

    Jayant 14, Jadeja 49

Here's Stokes, who has decided to go short to Jayant. It's not a bad theory, but it sits up nicely for the batsman to punch it through point for three. Short leg gets a hammering in the knees as Jayant tries to steer the ball away, and Stokes repays the favour by bouncing the ball into the batsman's bottom hand.

It's not been the hour that England would have hoped for. Getting rid of Ashwin was a bonus, but Jadeja is looking threatening.

  17. What have you missed?published at 05:04 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

If you're an England fan just waking up, then I've got good news and bad news to follow Andrew's cheery stat. The good news is Stokes has dismissed Ashwin, caught at backward point off a leading edge. The bad news is there's nothing doing out there for the bowlers. Nada. Not a zip. New man Jayant is finding it terribly easy to push Anderson away to the boundary.

England have only ever won two Tests in Asia after giving away a first-innings lead, both in Pakistan. In 1961 they won after giving away a seven-run deficit and then famous game they won in the dark in Karachi in 2000 it was a 17-run deficit.

Jayant played a nice hand in the second Test in his partnership with Ashwin and he's continuing that here. Anderson overpitches and he's pushed through mid-wicket for four; too short and he's punched off the back foot for another boundary. Some much needed drinks, from England's point of view at least, have arrived.
