  1. Ind 304-7published at 97 overs

Stokes is fired up, banging in a short ball that Jayant has a poke at. It's perilously close to taking the edge of the bat but Jayant somehow manages to avoid getting a tickle on it. Stokes is throwing everything he has at this, sweat dripping off his brow as he swipes a hand across his face in frustration.

Stokes, having taken a wicket, has now popped off the field. Still, that was another good innings from Ashwin. He's passed 50 three times in this series. Jayant Yadav has joined Jadeja at the crease, and watches as his partner inside edges past his stumps again. Anderson is the picture of happiness as they jog a single.

It was wide and Ashwin went for the drive but he wasn't quite on top of the ball. He's upset with himself, as he should be, because he was batting so well. He could have left that ball alone.

If you want something to happen, give the ball to your angriest bowler. Ben Stokes has struck in his first over of the day. Ashwin is furious with himself. A length ball that he tried to drive over the field but instead it went straight to Buttler at backward point.

I don't think this line of attack is right for Anderson. He'd be better going over the wicket to the left-hander. The pitch is really holding together.

  7. Ind 301-6published at 94 overs

Anderson grimaces with effort as he keeps Jadeja on the defensive, but there's nothing to help him in this pitch. No bounce, the ball is going low through to Bairstow. England will still be kicking themselves for wasting the toss on the first day. These two look unruffled so far.

There is a silk and grace to the way Ashwin has been batting this series. He doesn't rush anything and doesn't try to hit the ball so hard.

Ashwin does have a lot of pretty shots in his locker. Woakes spears it too wide and Ashwin gets up on his tiptoes to drive it through the covers and away for another boundary. A classy way to release any pressure that England had started to build. Another lovely drive rounds off the over, the ball racing across the outfield as Woakes turns and snatches his cap back from the umpire.

This is a very, very handy partnership - it started when England would have fancied their chances of getting ahead. All these runs are going to be very valuable.

  11. Ind 292-6published at 92 overs

    Ashwin 64, Jadeja 45

Anderson has decided he's had enough of people taking runs off him. He keeps everything outside the off stump, angling the odd delivery in, and Jadeja forces Ashwin to take a quick single that he's not too pleased about. He was struggling to run yesterday but he seems to have recovered.

If Hameed has been off the field all the while, that must be a source of concern. If it is broken, I'm sure he'll bat in the second innings, but will he play in the next Test?

  13. Ind 291-6published at 91 overs

Ooft. Woakes deceives Ashwin with a cutter that he inside edges into his pads. The ball balloons up towards cover but there's no-one there and even Stokes, with his Superman dives, can't get near that. Woakes looks disgruntled. He ends the over with his hands on his head as he finally draws an edge from Ashwin, but it doesn't carry through to Bairstow.

England haven't done much wrong, it's just that the ball isn't doing anything for the seamers. This pair are looking busy, confident and don't look like getting out. All this talk we had of bowler-friendly pitches has not really come to pass.

Enough's enough, for Cook. He's thrown the ball to James Anderson, who will be bowling to his old mate Jadeja. It's a defensive field and a defensive line, Anderson going wide of off stump. The final ball is angled into the pads and Jadeja flicks it up, but just short of Batty at cover. Batty looks furious as he stomps away at the end of the over.

There's not much happening out there in turns of movement. Moeen bowled a couple of respectable overs, but there was no spin. Woakes steamed in, but didn't beat the bat.

  17. Ind 289-6published at 89 overs

Anderson is skulking around in the field, watching as Woakes continues to aim at Ashwin's pads. Ashwin reaches for a very wide delivery, looking to smash Woakes away for another boundary, but even he can't get bat on to that one.

I think that Hameed injury might be more serious than we are led to believe.

  19. Ind 287-6published at 88 overs

    Ashwin 63, Jadeja 41

14 minutes. That's how long it's taken India to go into the lead this morning. And Jadeja has brought it up in glorious fashion, getting down the pitch to Moeen and driving him up and over Cook at mid-off. Cook won't mind that too much - there's always the chance Jadeja would miscue it - but there's nothing doing for Moeen.
