    Hameed 8, Root 65

Ooh, Hameed shapes to cut Jayant and the ball just creeps above the shot, before he does well to avoid edging a low delivery to the keeper. The ball is doing much. The odd delivery keeps low but that's about it.

    Lead by 3

Hameed looks like a good gust of wind would blow him over. He's playing well though, barely looking ruffled despite the men around the bat. And that's the lead for England! Ashwin tosses it up and Root obliges, a cover drive beating the sprawling fielder and hammering into the boundary rope.

  4. Eng 131-6published at 59 overs

    Hameed 7, Root 60

Jayant Yadav will take over from Shami for a bit. Hameed is slow to respond to Root's call for a single but he runs his bat in before the throw gets back. Root throws up a hand and checks that he's okay, in big brotherly fashion.

Hameed plays his forward defensive, then holds it for two or three seconds. That will get the odd bowler riled.

Ashwin's into the attack, and that's a drop. Not an easy take, admittedly, but Parthiv could have clung on to that. Ashwin pushed the ball across Hameed's forward defensive, the ball just skimmed the bat and it flicked Parthiv's gloves before landing just in front of slip.

Shami continues his short ball tactic at Hameed but he's handling it well. He gets up on tippy toes to guide a delivery through third man and he keeps that little finger out of the way when he defends. He had three nets yesterday, by all accounts, and seemed to be okay during a throwdown session this morning.

Hameed is a bit of a puzzle because he had three nets yesterday. In one of them at least he played quite fluently. He's looked reasonably comfortable in defence.

Hameed faces a full over of Jadeja as the noise cranks up in the crowd. There's plenty of schoolkids in today. It's not quite as loud on the pitch as Hameed continues his mission to grind India down, although an inside edge that pops up towards short leg has India briefly interested.

  11. Pakistan collapse to defeat in New Zealandpublished at 05:12 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

It seems England aren't the only team prone to a batting collapse.

Pakistan have lost the final Test against New Zealand - and the series 2-0 - after slumping from 131-0 to 230 all out in pursuit of 369 on the fifth day in Hamilton.

They became the first side to lose nine wickets in the final session of a Test, with Neil Wagner claiming three in six balls to wrap up a 138-run win. The collapse spanned a mere 25 overs.

Wagner finished with 3-57, Michell Santner 2-49 and Tim Southee 2-60, while Sami Aslam (91) and Azhar Ali (58) were the only Pakistan batsmen to reach 20.

  12. Eng 124-6published at 55 overs

    Hameed 2, Root 58

Shami will continue, but he's got Root in his sights rather than Hameed. A single from the makeshift opener brings the actual opener on strike, who does get a bit of short stuff. Hameed gets on one knee and throws his head to one side, and then does well to jab his bat down on a low delivery that was threatening his pads.

India have got what they wanted, the nightwatchman Batty and the dangerous Buttler out quickly. Hameed is defending stoutly, so England will still feel like they have an opportunity - they have an opener and number three at the crease.

England are not out of it, yet. India's last four wickets yielded 213 runs. It can be done. Time is not a factor. A couple of good partnerships and get to at least 275. India's fielding is below par, they gifted England about 80 runs in the first innings, and are likely to leak more runs today.

I am not a fan of either team. Would like to see some positivity injected into the England side.

    Root 57, Hameed 1

Root isn't half quick between the wickets. He pushes into the leg side, sees the fielder is a little slow to return the ball and races up the wicket to add two to the total. Jadeja whizzes through the rest of the over before the drinks, towels and physios arrive on the pitch.

What a fine innings from Joe Root. He has been more cautious than aggressive, but that is understandable with the wickets falling around him.

That's a good leave from Hameed. Shami bowls a low one that goes past the off stump, through the keeper and away for four byes. Hameed then gets off the mark with a lazy jog, which brings a smattering of applause from the crowd. His family are also watching on from the stands, his Dad grinning as Hameed makes it safely to the other end.

This is Joe Root's second-slowest Test half-century, coming from 147 balls. The only one slower came on his debut in Nagpur four years ago.

That familiar chant of "Rooooooot" comes from the travelling England fans as a clipped boundary brings Root to his 25th Test half-century. A highly impressive effort. Shunted up the order, he's stuck at his task admirably while others have fallen around him.
