  1. Eng 184-7published at 78 overs

    Lead by 50

Hameed has now brought up a century of balls faced. He's on 16. Top blocking. Ashwin's finding a touch more bounce, especially with the quicker delivery. Hameed lets a bouncier ball fly up past his off stump, where it's taken with a flourish by Parthiv.

I don't think the England dressing room is going to be excited, but they have a lead and it has expanded since lunch.

  3. Eng 183-7published at 77 overs

I don't think England have lost their nerve. This isn't really exposing anything we didn't already know about this team - a brittle top order relying on the middle order to bail them out, for example. This goes back to the first day, and not making the most of the toss. Jadeja fires through a maiden to Hameed, who greets him with that familiar foward defensive.

Matt Southcombe: It all started so well in the 1st test. Have they totally lost their nerve?

  5. Eng 183-7published at 76 overs

    Hameed 16, Woakes 25

A bit of relay fielding goes wrong on the boundary edge, the first fielder accidentally tossing the ball over his mate's head, allowing Woakes to run two. Kohli is looking ponderous. His mind will be on the new ball, which you'd assume he will take and let Shami have a burst. That's rubbish from Ashwin, short, dragged down and Woakes hammers it away for four.

If you're just waking up, you will have missed a Pakistan batting collapse that topped anything even England could manage.

They became the first side to lose nine wickets in the final session of a Test as the Kiwis completed a 2-0 series win in Hamilton.

The tourists slumped from 131-0 to 230 all out inside 25 overs en route to a 138-run defeat in the second Test.

It was New Zealand's first series win over Pakistan since 1985 - and lifted England into second in the International Cricket Council rankings.

  7. Eng 175-7published at 75 overs

    Lead by 41

Far be it from me to ruin your Tuesday morning, Ben, especially at this hour. But it is a balmy 22 degrees in Mohali. It'll take one amazing rain dance to change that. Hameed is, I think, offering Woakes batting advice in between overs, which is brilliant. He does seem to have slotted nicely into the England set-up. Woakes takes his advice and knocks a shorter Jadeja delivery away for two.

Ben: Just woken up. Before I look at the score, can someone confirm it is raining in Mohali?

  9. Eng 172-7published at 74 overs

Ashwin gets Woakes playing across his pad and the ball pops up, teasing short leg, but the man under the lid can't get there in time. Woakes then goes on the charge but Ashwin isn't having it. He bowls a little fuller and Woakes retreats.

Assuming India don't lose this game, this will be their 16th unbeaten game in a row, their second longest in history. They went 17 Tests without losing from 1985 to 1987. It will also be their 17th Test in a row without defeat at home.

  11. Eng 171-7published at 73 overs

    Hameed 15, Woakes 14

That's pretty stuff from Woakes, a drive that runs through the fielder's legs and races along outfield for another boundary. He does have some excellent looking shots in his locker. Another quick single keeps the strike rotating. I hate the cliche but presumably the plan is to let these two play their natural game; Woakes showing off his strokeplay while Hameed stays on the defensive.

So Hameed had three nets yesterday, went for an x-ray, had throwdowns this morning from Steven Finn, and now he's out in the middle. He's looking solid, too, working a single before Woakes hammers an Ashwin short ball away from four. There's not as many around the bat for Ashwin as there is for Jadeja, which lets Woakes work another few runs away.

  14. Eng 156-7published at 71 overs

    Hameed 13, Woakes 1

Jadeja, the most threatening of the bowlers today, continues to Woakes. Three men around the bat, every ball accompanied with shouts of "bowled!" from behind the stumps. Woakes gets forward, using the middle of the bat to knock the ball away. A maiden.

Hameed has hidden any discomfort he's had. He was dropped once but his defence has been impeccable. He has shown a great deal of composure for a 19-year-old - and he is learning all the time. He's just soaking up info for future reference. It's bleak for England but there's always something to be gained from playing well.

Out come Hameed and Woakes, jogging past the India huddle. They've got 10 overs until the new ball, a slender lead of 22 in their pockets.

Three wickets have gone down this morning, including the big scalp of Joe Root. Haseeb Hameed came out at number eight and has stuck to what he knows best - blocking. He's run well between the wickets, putting on 45 with Root, and he's dealt with a short ball attack from India's pace bowlers nicely. However India have winkled England out with accuracy and pressure. This all goes back to the performance on the first day.
