    Hameed 23, Anderson 5

Anderson fends a 90mph short ball down towards the slips in an entirely unconvincing manner, and gets some helpful advice from Kohli, who is looming nearby. Yadav pitches it up and Anderson likes the look of that. It's creamed square of the wicket for a boundary.

Andrew Lewin: Haseeb Hameed: warrior. Such grit and defiance for a 19-year-old.

Richard Pierce: Haseeb Hameed is my kind of batsman. Took me 54 balls to get off mark opening once; a club record, apparently.

Stuart Foster: England batsmen. Educate yourselves and watch Hameed batting. You will learn a thing or two.

A brilliant over from Shami. A fired up fast bowler is such a wonderful sight. Woakes was rattled after taking the blow to the head while Rashid got himself in a horrible position trying to launch the ball down to the boundary. James Anderson gets off the mark to his first ball, which means he'll be facing Umesh Yadav. Three guesses where these deliveries will be pitched...

Even if you have 10 first-class hundreds, when you come across short bowling of the quality of Shami's it's very, very difficult.

    Rashid c Umesh b Shami 0 (Eng 195-9)

This is a fantastic over of fast bowling. Shami banged it in and Rashid tried to hook but he wasn't watching the ball and the second it connected with the bat, it was obvious where it was going. Umesh, down at fine leg, barely had to move.

What a well directed short ball again - Woakes had no clue whatsoever. Virat Kohli's gamble of taking the second new ball has worked and I think the physio may have to attend to Woakes.

Shami's short ball is like Malcolm Marshall's (below) because he's not very tall and it skids at you.

Out. Excellent follow up from Shami. Another short ball, Woakes threw his bat at it but had his head well out of the way. Up it popped and Parthiv wasn't missing out on that. That was an excellent bit of short, fast bowling.

    Eng 195-7published at 83.1 overs

Here's Shami, and he's struck Woakes' helmet with his first ball! That looked dreadful; the new padding at the back of the helmet came flying off. Kohli and Shami came straight over to check that he was okay. The physio is out and Woakes has a grin, albeit a shaky one, on his face.

The way Hameed is batting you have to question why he didn't come in to bat yesterday. He's showing no discomfort whatsoever and it's just the sort of solidity England needed.

Hameed chases a delivery from Umesh that is sliding down leg, and they all go up behind the stumps. Did he get an edge on that? Kohli decides not to review and it looks like it may have brushed Hameed's snazzy cable knit sweater. Hameed rides the bounce of a short ball, pushing it away off the back foot, before getting into that crab-like stance to defend a fuller ball.

Here we go. Umesh Yadav has the shiny cherry in hand and Hameed will face it.

It's a good rearguard action by England. Hameed has been like a pillar and, at the other end, Chris Woakes is looking to get the scoreboard ticking over. He's doing it well at the moment.

Jadeja has had a change of ends, and Woakes angles him away for three. Hameed tries to get in on the attack, coming down the pitch and driving, but a diving Ashwin cuts it off. He gets a round of applause from his captain in thanks.

Ian Smith: All those forward defensive lunges. Young Hameed's left leg must be miles stronger than his right leg.

The fourth umpire, up in the stands, has the new cherry in his hands but Umesh Yadav will continue with the old one for the time being. He's bowled at a decent pace all Test, well up in the high 80s. He sends a bouncer down that Hameed sways under, before jabbing his bat down on a yorker.

Hameed is relishing the fight and he looks so competent against spin bowling - a bit like the young Joe Root four years ago.

Four! From Hameed! From his 111th delivery! Brilliant. Ashwin bowled it a little fuller and Hameed gave it the full slog sweep treatment. He celebrates by driving down the pitch to get off strike, leaving Woakes to pat out the rest of the over. Right, will India take the new ball?

  19. Eng 186-7published at 79 overs

Jadeja hustles through another over, before there's a long chat between Kohli, Ashwin and assorted players about the ball. I assume Kohli's asking about the new ball.
