India, from the minute they lost the toss, have produced the style of cricket we expected before the series began. It was skillful bowing on the first day, then their tail hung in to play with maturity. There has been some indifferent strokes from England and some high-quality spin bowling from India.

While applauding and not wishing to change Haseeb's approach, he needs to find a couple of pressure-relieving safe run scoring shots. Cook at his best has the cut and turn off his hips. Boycott had back-foot square drive and on-drive. They felt safe playing them but it also kept the scoreboard ticking over. Otherwise there is a danger that Haseeb will bat long periods but get out with few on the board. Obviously this is a difficult situation but perhaps something to work on.

It's not been dramatic or flamboyant - India have just worn England down. They are closing in...

Hameed ruins my appreciation of his blocking by playing a deft little glide down to third man for a couple. That was well placed, pushed between the two men lurking close to the bat. Ashwin keeps it full, Hameed sees out the rest of the over, and that will be lunch.

This is the time where Hameed has to go up in the gears if his finger will allow it. There are 13 overs until the second new ball. England can't draw, so he has to get them some sort of lead.

Jadeja has looked the most threatening of the bowlers today. He's got a real knack of mixing up his speeds to throw the batsmen. Hameed continues his defense. Just one more over before lunch.

A quick look at the dressing room shows a thoughtful looking Cook, chin in hand, staring out at the pitch. He's treated to the sight of Hameed's immaculate forward defensive. Woakes meets him in the middle for a natter as the over finishes.

Root's class really shone through in that innings, because it wasn't easy. There's a gulf in class between Root and a number of the other batsmen.

Chris Woakes, who has nine first-class centuries, has joined Hameed at the crease. He's in Jadeja's sights and he gets right forward to smother the spin.

Root has pushed at one that spins and Rahane has taken a great catch. It's just a little lapse in concentration. There was a gap on the point boundary and he was trying to push the ball there for a single. Jadeja is such a threat to the right-handers.

Root's gone! That's a supreme catch from Ajinkya Rahane at slip. Root pushed forward and the ball took the edge and flew to Rahane, who stuck out a hand and clung on. Root is gutted as he begins his slow walk from the field. He's done a good job - he faced 179 balls, the majority of which came when his teammates were falling around him.

Ashwin is looking thoroughly annoyed that Hameed isn't trying to drive him to midwicket or edge him behind. It's a good contest. Root, meanwhile, just takes the odd single to keep the score ticking over and try and stop the spinners from settling into a rhythm.

Pravin Kumar: It's not over until it's over, I've a feeling Hameed and Root are going to cling on for a while, anything above 150 would be tricky

Plenty of noise coming from the crowd, enjoying the tunes coming from the trombonist, who is sporting a superb hair/beard combination. Back on the field, Hameed isn't giving anything away, and neither is Jayant. He is the very definition of solid in defence.

Root does get to face Ashwin and nearly gets himself caught in the process. He goes to sweep again but a top edge balloons up and over the keeper, running away for four runs. Ashwin looks less than impressed and mixes up his lines, trying to get the ball to drift into both batsmen.

Simon Dancer: Root is a class act. I have been watching England since the mid 60s and I think he is the best English batter I have seen.

There's a group of schoolkids having a whale of a time in the stands, waving four and six cards, which is a little optimistic when Hameed is on strike. He continues his defense before Kohli spreads the field and lets Hameed take the single from the last ball. Presumably the idea is to frustrate Root by keeping him off strike.

I thought Hameed would have his hand coming off the bat on a regular basis, but he seems to be absolutely fine. It makes the decision to bat him this low all the more bizarre. It's a bit of a mystery.

Shot. Root gets down and sweeps Ashwin for a boundary, the ball rolling through a diving square leg. Root's still pushing for runs. He takes the first one at full Red Bull speed before turning to take the second, but Shami's arm is strong and cuts him off. I like this. It's a quiet sort of aggression.
