Haseeb Hameed's fifty came off 147 balls in 163 minutes with five fours and a six. He went from 23 to 50 off 18 balls.

  2. Eng 235-9published at 90 overs

    Hameed 58, Anderson 5

What were you doing when you were 19? Not saving a Test match for your country, I'd wager. I was at uni, living in a room that I can generously describe as "cosy." Shami returns, and Hameed runs a slower ball through third man for another boundary. He jogs a single from the fifth ball, leaving Anderson just one ball to cope with. It's great to see.

Marc Gridley: A hopeless cause but this lad Hameed has shown some incredible fight and bottle. We have finally found Cook's partner.

Paul Mackereth: Mentally & technically brilliant innings from Hameed.

Vanhunks: Ah, this boy Hameed... he is the real deal.

A fantastic, battling innings from Hameed. His composure is so impressive, especially given that he's nursing a finger injury.

Considering he has only taken two paracetamol, Hameed is playing some strong shots. He's the positive out of this game for England.

Haseeb Hameed has got to his 50 with a six. A SIX. This is brilliant stuff from the 19-year-old. He knows he has to take the spinners on now, protecting Anderson while upping England's lead. Again, he's down on one knee, slogging Ashwin away into the stands. He gets applause from the Indian fielders too.

Henry Morris: So Hameed is a year older than me. I'm currently battling a Monday student night hangover and he's battling to save a Test?

  8. Eng 221-9published at 88 overs

    Hameed 44, Anderson 5

Hameed likes using the sweep to the spinners, swishing Jadeja away for another boundary. He knocks some of the protection off his gloves in the process. Jadeja fumes at Murali Vijay as he fires the ball in to the wrong end, allowing Hameed and Anderson to run two and stop Anderson spacing the spinner.

If Haseeb Hameed can get another 50, then they might have a chance. He's shown a huge amount of character today, especially with that little finger. But it's a real concern that England can't consistently produce batting performances.

Spin returns, courtesy of Ashwin, and Hameed edges his first ball down to the boundary. Kohli has the field set invitingly for the single but Hameed's having none of it. He's going to slog, instead. That's brilliant. On one knee, heaved away for another boundary. It might have just damaged his finger slightly as he takes his glove off and struggles to get it back on. It hasn't injured him enough to stop him offering Anderson a little bit of advice of how to block the final delivery, which he does.

India's seamers have been fantastic on this tour so far. Yadav has some real pace and Shami is a skiddy type of bowler, difficult to score runs off.

Haseeb Hameed has found out that Test cricket is a different ball game altogether. It's a great opportunity for boys to become men and I believe if he had opened the batting, he would have shown that he is becoming a man very, very quickly.

After all that, it's time for drinks. What a spell with the new ball from Mohammed Shami.

Hameed hit an absolutely glorious boundary before that daft review, taking on the short ball and swinging it away to fine leg. There's a bit of drama as Hameed tries to keep the strike from the final ball, and Shami, fielding the ball, momentarily gets in Anderson's way. The return hits the stumps but Anderson was well in, albeit miffed by Shami getting in front of him.

Hameed has missed that by a good distance. That's just fresh air. I'm not sure what Kohli thought they'd heard, but that's not out.

Have India got the baby Boycott caught behind? Kohli thinks so, Shami is less sure, but Kohli is the man in charge of the T sign.

Umesh Yadav's got a good yorker and he should bowl it because it's clear that Anderson is expecting the short ball.
