Something I heard [former West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman] Courtney Browne say about spinners is 'don't try and spin the ball in your first over, just try to get your line'. Nothing wrong with bowling six sliders.

An excellent throw from the sub, after a fumble in the deep, knocks down the stumps. Joe Root was safely home, though. Root then pulls Devendra Bishoo into the deep and it looks set for a boundary before a nice flick from Kieran Powell stops the ball going for a boundary. That's the 50 partnership up between this pair, from 65 balls.

West Indies have made a lot of errors with catches. When you make those sort of mistakes and bowl loose deliveries, you'll get punished.

    Hales 30, Root 25

Carlos Brathwaite continues and his first delivery is a loose, floaty bit of nothing that Alex Hales helps on its way to the boundary. Hales grimaces in frustration as he smacks a fullish delivery straight to the fielder, before he nabs a single with a quick dart down the track.

It's a shame because that's the only part of the ground without the advertising hoardings. It's always dangerous when you slip in your spikes.

Evin Lewis is on his feet, being attended to by the physio. He looks to be walking OK but he's cradling his arm. It looked as though his knee had given way but it may have been his arm that took the impact as he fell onto the concrete. He's holding his left arm as he walks off.

That doesn't look good for Evin Lewis. He went charging down to the boundary to that final shot from Joe Root and flicked it back over. He went sliding over the rope, onto the concrete behind, and it looks as though he's injured his knee. He looks in serious pain.

Devendra Bishoo continues, spinning the ball from hand to hand. There's a hint of turn for the leggie and Joe Root gets beaten by a nice one. That's a stonking shot though from Root, a lovely sweep that Root places nicely and gets a boundary for his troubles. Another nicely placed push brings him two runs, but Evin Lewis looks to have done himself a serious injury, diving on the boundary.

I think West Indies Cricket Board has got to give these guys good contracts so they can say no to the IPL, Big Bash and these T20 leagues. They need to concentrate on international cricket.

    Root 16, Hales 24

A double change, with Carlos Brathwaite coming on at the opposite end. Joe Root adjusts his gloves as he gets beaten before he dances, tippy-toe style, down the pitch. Brathwaite sees him coming, bangs the ball in and Root ends up pulling it, unconvincingly, away for a single. Things have quietened down since the opening overs.

England, with all their resources, these guys are phenomenally fit. They are almost like Olympic athletes. West Indies have got to aspire to that.

    Root 14, Hales 23

It's taken me an embarrassingly long time to work out that pun in Joe Root's Twitter handle. Anyway, time for a bit of spin, with Devendra Bishoo on to twirl his arm. Root's changed his bat, to see if that will help his rhythm. This time it's Alex Hales who goes fishing outside the off-stump, just avoiding getting the outside edge. That's rubbish, though, from Bishoo. Short, wide, whacked away for four. A gift.

Four! That's nice from Alex Hales, a proper pull to a too-short delivery from Alzarri Joseph, and it's away for a boundary. Ashley Nurse meanwhile is kicking his heels into the turf, avoiding Jason Holder's gaze. The West Indies captain is not in the best of spirits. His side's catching hasn't been great throughout the series.

Jason Holder doesn't have a lot of pace but tries to make sure he bowls the right line and length. It's like the South African Vernon Philander, who is so accurate.

  16. Eng 45-1published at 11 overs

England trade a couple of singles and Alex Hales will face the next over, giving Joe Root a chance to settle down and think things through from the opposite end.

A very difficult chance. Well bowled by Jason Holder. It all comes down to the line and length.

  18. dropped catch

Root dropped again - on 12published at 10.4 overs

    Eng 44-1

Joe Root is rehearsing some really nice looking shots, and then not playing any of them. A bottom edge goes flying past the keeper and away to the boundary. Jason Holder has his hands on his hips, and that's a drop! Again! A lovely bit of bowling from Holder, drawing Root forward, and the ball flies off the edge towards Ashley Nurse in the gully. Nurse gets his fingertips to it but he can't hold on, and the ball hits the turf.

    Joseph 5-0-23-1

Joe Root rehearses the perfect pull shot, then comes dancing down the wicket to replicate it and ends up inside-edging it into the turf. Not the prettiest shot he's ever played. That's much better though, a lovely drive that bounces past Kieran Powell and away through the covers for a boundary. That should settle him down.
