Rabada, who is already three figures into the red this innings, is helped out by the man at backward point as his short, loose ball is flashed away by Moeen.

A single brings Broad back on to strike and once again he is like a giraffe on ice as a short ball sends his limbs into overdrive. Poor bloke really has been messed up by that short ball that struck him in August 2014.

South Africa don't have a quality spinner and that hurts them. When he bowled yesterday I thought he was very ordinary. I thought the captaincy also lacked something. England were plundering runs at four an over.

    Ali 81, Broad 24

Might be time to give Morkel a little blow. His sixth over of the morning is decent but lacks the threat of earlier. Broad blocks, bobs and weaves but looks more in control.

Could we argue if SA had completed its 90 overs yesterday, Root might have achieved 200 runs and therefore would have been more relaxed this morning and could still be in?

Broad has 20 and they have all been streaky runs! Inside edge, outside edge. He's played one decent shot, but they all count.

  6. Eng 406-7published at 97 overs

Broad is scoring runs, but very few of them have been intentional. Kagiso Rabada is on and gets one to nip back in but rolls his eyes skyward as the inside edge of Broad's bat sends it spinning past the diving De Kock for four.

A pull to a short ball later in the over doesn't connect but limps almost apologetically to the rope. England are past 400 and this partnership is creeping towards 50.

I don't think they've bowled correctly at Stuart Broad. Since he got hit a few years ago he's been nothing like the player he was. They should be round the wicket into the body

  8. Eng 398-7published at 96 overs

Broad - not a man who enjoys a short ball - is sent into panic-mode as Morkel digs one in. His desperate fend is ugly but at least effective.

No such problems for Moeen, who remaind Bond-like in the cool manner he deals with all situations.

Here is the second wicket to fall this morning, as Dawson's debut gets off to a shocker, two balls after Root's dismissal.

  9. Eng 395-7published at 95 overs

    Broad 14, Moeen 79

We have a minor delay as the umpire has his little scissors out to give the ball a quick short back and sides.

Newly-styled, Philander continues his tussle with Moeen, who connects with one drive but is denied a boundary by the man at cover. It ensures a maiden.

These two are scoring pretty freely, but they are being reminded regularly that they need to keep their discipline. Morkel gets one to rise past the loose stab from Broad.

It has been a fascinating watch so far this morning. First blood to South Africa. Here is how England lost their skipper...

On the subject of left-handed batsmen having more of a flourish, it's to do with the right side of their brain controlling their dominant left side. This right side of the brain is the creative, artful, imaginative side.

Right-handed batsmen are usually the opposite due to the left side of their brain controlling the logical, analytical functions.

Moeen is on the pull. Philander drops short and the left-hander is on it in a flash, lofting propelling the ball over midwicket. Moeen makes it consecutive boundaries with a fine flick off his legs. England biting back.

Broad is expecting the bouncer all the time but he is a dangerous player and is not going to block too many.

Replays show that England - and Broad in particular - got away with one. Philander swung one into the pads and there was a big appeal but the umpire wasn't convinced. It's an error, though, as replays show it was hitting. Vernon was convinced. Lucky boy, Stuart.

Broad rubs salt in the wound by driving Morkel through cover for four and then edges past the empty fourth slip slot for another boundary.

Chris Bamford‏: Brilliant as Root is he doesn't come back the day after scoring big very well. Anyone know his average when not out overnight on 100+?

    Andrew Samson

Joe Root's 190 came off 234 balls, with 27 fours and a six in 376 minutes. It was the highest score by an England captain on his debut and the fourth highest overall. The partnership between Root and Moeen was 177 off 211 balls - a rate of about 5.1 an over.

  20. Eng 372-7published at 91 overs

I think Elgar might want to step forward a couple of paces. For the second time this morning, Moeen edges just short of slip off Philander.

The nicks keep coming, this time from Broad, who is fortunate as the ball bounces between keeper and first slip before skipping away to the boundary.

England are going to have to dig in here.
