That, in the space of three Morkel deliveries, is a great example of some wonderful seam bowling. The big man scrambled the seam slightly, first getting the ball to nip up the slope to produce a beauty that got Root. Two balls later, he slanted it down the incline to rattle Dawson on the pads. One out and up the slope, one in and down the slope. Two wickets in three balls.

Broad is looking at the pitch as if it scooted a bit low. I do think this pitch will go a bit lower, it happened in the county match on days three and four when Yorkshire played Middlesex.

It's doing a bit. New man Stuart Broad is beaten outside off by a Morkel ball that stays a bit low.

    Well, it's anything but dull.

Yep. Gone. South Africa's morning gets even better. There was bounce and movement to leg but the review shows it was clipping the stumps, so umpire's call and another man has to depart. Not exactly the Lord's Test debut Dawson would have dreamed about.

It is all happening! Liam Dawson is the new man and he is smacked on the pads by Morkel. Up goes the finger. It looked out to me.

A wonderful performance by England's 80th Test captain who came out yesterday with his team in some trouble.

It was a surprise, I don't think the crowd were expecting that, it was a good ball, do you go forward or hang back and in the end he did neither. It hit De Kock quite fast and he had a bit of panic to get the gloves on it. But what a tremendous innings.

    Root c De Kock b Morkel 190 (Eng 367-6)

What a shame. A magnificent innings comes to an end in a tame manner as Root provides a slim nick to a full Morkel ball in the corridor. De Kock catches and England's skipper has to depart.

    Just the start SA wanted.

I saw Joe this morning and he said he'd got back to his room and listened back to our podcast with his Dad and Grandad.

  10. Eng 367-5published at 89 overs

Partnering Morkel this morning is Vernon Philander, the man who did most of the damage in the day one morning session that now feels like a lifetime ago.

Root welcomes him with a back-foot push, played late to beat the field and find the rope.

Moeen is less assured, as Philander finds an edge but fortunately for the left-hander it doesn't carry to slip.

The towering Morne Morkel shakes of some rust with the first over of the day. It's a steady, sedate start that doesn't ruffle any England feathers, regardless of which side of the wicket from which the Proteas giant bowls.

Moeen caps the six with a typically picturesque drive through cover for four. Poetry in motion.

Right then, the players are back out, the sun is shining, the stands are filling up, Joe Root has no doubt dosed up on Lemsip*. Here we go again...

For the inside track on a remarkable first day in Test captaincy for Joe Root, you could do a lot worse than read the piece by our chief sports writer Tom Fordyce.

Tom refers to captaincy as a rollercoaster. Hopefully, we're in for another ascension today, not a plunge.

A dry afternoon to come at Lord's, with the best of the sunshine this morning. A little more in the way of cloud this afternoon, but we should remain dry. It will be another hot afternoon, though not quite as hot as yesterday, with a high of 28 Celsius (82F) expected in just a light westerly breeze. Staying dry and warm into the evening.
