That ball pitched 10 inches outside off stump and the slope keeps on taking it.

Yep. Something didn't quite look right there.

It was close but ball tracking shows the ball to be going just over leg stump.

    The South African skipper survives.

I think it could be umpire's call.

    Broad hits Elgar's pads.

    Big appeal. Given!

Elgar is not impressed. That looked high and leggy to me.

    Target 331

Cheers for that Steph. You've set my tummy off now.

Obviously Quinton de Kock hasn't come out to open and it doesn't look like he'll see him up the order any time soon as he's on the South African balcony in his training gear not whites and pads.

The TV coverage is having a look at Anderson's follow through. He's nudging the danger area with his spikes. Good news for Moeen Ali as long as the umpires don't have a word.

There's a chap to the left of me who really must be applauded. He has arrived with a cheese platter, a selection of chutneys, crackers, all balanced on a tray that lies on his knee. That is excellent Test match preparation.

It all looks alright when they play two or three out of the middle of the bat but it kind of belies what is in the pitch. They have played nicely so far, nice and straight, and that's what you have to do to get in.

    Target 331

South Africa will need to make the second-highest successful fourth innings run chase at Lord's to win this match, only behind that famous 344-1 by the West Indies in 1984.

Positive start from South Africa. Kuhn looks to drive again and gets a thick outside edge for four before letting the rest of the over pass by comfortably.

Why are South Africa batting? Because Jonny Bairstow let his back foot slide just a little too far.

England to win, no doubt. Someone would have to play an extraordinary, fantastic innings because they've got to get through the new ball before we get to spin. I don't think they'll get near 330 but it's sport, you never know.

    Target 331

Just two slips and a gully for Anderson as he starts us off bowling to Heino Kuhn who made one before nicking off to first slip in the first innings.

A pretty conventional field from new skipper Joe Root.

Anderson beats Kuhn once before the debutante gets nicely forward to push three into the covers.

    South Africa need 331

Dean Elgar and Heino Kuhn march out but there is a delay as the England bowlers are unhappy with the new cherry they've picked.

    Out comes another box full.

Jimmy Anderson has a feel of them all before settling for one.

    Here we go.

  12. South Africa need 331 to winpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

Who are going to be the key men for England here?

I assume Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad will start us off but surely Moeen Ali is the main man on this turning wicket?

This'll be a good test for Joe Root's captaincy too. A lead of 330 will allow for relatively attacking fields but no captain wants to lose a game from here.

Bairstow's 51 was the seventh score between 50 and 59 in this match and that ties the record for scores in that sequence in a match.

It's possible this game could finish tonight if we get the extra half hour and a little torrent of wickets.

  16. Postpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Well Mr Fizz.

I think four and a half sessions is an awfully long time to bat out in the fourth innings for a draw.

There is also the few that if a batsman just sits back and defends on this pitch then eventually he'll get a delivery with his name on it.

Could we see a change in the South African batting order? De Kock to move up a couple of places perhaps?

Mr Fizz‏: Can someone tell me why a draw is not possible? Why wouldn't SA just defend their wickets tomorrow if the target is too high?

  18. England all out for 233published at 14:33 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

After a terrible morning that was an excellent little session for England.

They added 51 in quick time with Bairstow making 51 and Mark Wood a very handy 28 before he was bowled by Rabada.

I thought that was stupid batting, you can't beat eight men on the boundary regularly. He's played really well but I reckon that's a bit of a brain fade.

It's a good job that Bairstow was confirmed as out. He, Anderson and the South Africa team were halfway to the pavilion when the decision came.
