With the way he is playing Hashim Amla is basically saying to Moeen Ali here, you can bowl that line but I know you are not going to turn it that much.

It has been an accomplished innings from Dean Elgar today. He's got a bit of rough to deal with against Moeen but it playing him well. This one was in the air for a while but in the end it gave him one of his six fours.

    South Africa lead by 205

If there was ever a time England needed Ben Stokes to live up to his 'he makes things happen' tag then this is it.

The South African lead is 203 - England only made 205 in their first innings - as he comes into the attack.

Stokes hits Amla on the pad. Huge appeal from Stokes. The all-rounder wants a review but Root isn't having it. I think the one Stokes persuaded his skipper into taking upstairs in the first innings worked against him there. Replays show it was umpire's call so the right decision from Root.

    South Africa lead by 203

It is all flat. Very flat. The crowd are quiet, Joe Root nips off the field leaving Ben Stokes in charge.

There's a bit of excitement! Amla skips down and whacks Moeen over his head for four.

That's poor from Moeen. He follows up the previous ball with a full toss and Amla gives it what it deserved. Four more.

  5. SA 63-1published at 17 overs

Shot! Elgar has hit some nice strokes but this is probably his best.

He drives back down the ground off Broad and it goes straight, straight enough to go through the legs of Amla at the non-strikers' end, and to the rope.

The lead is building worryingly from an England point of view.

  6. SA 58-1published at 16 overs

    Elgar 32 Amla 14

"Yes Moeen, lovely Mo," says Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps in his broad Bradford accent as the spinner flights one up to Elgar.

Catch! No, no chance. Root has a man on the drive and Elgar's shot was in the air in a while but not within reach of the fielder.

The result, four more to the total.

The England bowlers will get some criticism here for not looking threatening as South Africa's but the attack are tired. When you have only had three of four hours with your feet up it's tough to come out and do it again. I feel for England's bowlers. England look down and out and defeated now, there is not a lot of energy there. They need to be positive and believe they can bowl South Africa out for under 200. And they can!

    Elgar 28 Amla 14

First sign of spin and - thankfully for Liam Dawson's 'mentions' on Twitter I'd say - it is Moeen Ali into the attack.

  9. SA 53-1published at 15 overs

South Africa lead by 183 runs

Runs are flowing again. Two boundaries in the last over, two more in this. The first is a nice clip through mid-wicket but Elgar the second a squirt through the slips.

The second boundary results in Broad demanding a third man. Skipper Root obliges.

Amla, like Elgar in the previous over, does a good job of making sure the ball doesn't carry to slip. His soft hands not only preserve his wicket but allow him to pick up four.

Four more! This pitch is a lot slower than the first innings and as a result Amla isn't hurried on the pull like previously and thumps the ball to the rope.

  11. SA 37-1published at 13 overs

    South Africa lead by 167

Stuart Broad takes the first over after drinks. South Africa happy to keep milking singles and rotating the strike with 14 overs left in the day.

The England fast bowler finds the edge of Dean Elgar's bat with the final ball of the over but the South African opener plays it with soft hands. Joe Root with a smart bit of fielding to save four runs in the cordon.

    Graeme Smith
Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

Mark Wood has looked a little flat so far. He has spent a lot of time in the field. It will be interesting to see how Joe Root goes with his tactics now. There is so much time left in the match so he has to look to bowl South Africa out. He will need catchers in place but at the same time he needs to keep an eye on the runs.

  13. SA 33-1published at 12 overs

    South Africa lead by 163

It is all very straight up and down for Wood. He gets his first look at Amla after Elgar nicks a single but the South African calmly plays him straight back down the ground to mid off.

VB: If Jimmy Anderson hadn't had his wilderness years he'd be miles ahead of Glenn McGrath by now. Majestic bowling every single time.

Chris Bevan‏: Absolute garbage. If I was Jimmy I'd be fuming!!! Bowlers did their job, batting selection is suspect, Geoffrey spot on.

Chris in Leigh: England getting a lot of stick for that batting performance and yes it wasn't great but would much rather us carry on with this attacking style rather than the England of old style! It Isn't going to come off every time but when it does we will bat teams out of the game!

  15. SA 32-1published at 11 overs

A third maiden in a row for England. They need wickets but at least the South African lead isn't rising too quickly. The run rate is just 2.90 runs an over and has dropped since the wicket of Kuhn.

As I mentioned Joe Root's early time in change of the DRS decision have not been the best.

Thankfully for England this one to Heino Kuhn didn't matter as James Anderson had him out shortly after.

    Elgar 16 Amla 4

Wood nudges 88mph in his next over and bangs a few in to Elgar but this pitch is slow and the batsman isn't threatened.

Who can be the man to bowl South Africa out? Jimmy Anderson is about to start his sixth over so I think he might be out of the attack soon.

    Elgar 16 Amla 4

There's a bit of an issue with one of the foot holes just to the left of the umpire as Anderson runs in. It is filled with saw dust and every time Jimmy comes into his delivery stride a puff of dust is kicked up.

I'm telling you about saw dust because not much happened in that over. Amla blocks out a maiden.

Not the best of starts for Wood as he concedes a similar boundary with Elgar driving through the covers.

10 runs from the over and no increase in the pace of the first ball.
