Here's Mark Wood into the attack. I'm going to keep a keen eye on his pace in this spell. The Durham man hasn't got up to the 90mph+ of the limited overs matches earlier in the year but England need a sharp spell here.

First ball is 86mph and is driven by Elgar for four.

James Anderson has made the batsmen come forward far more in this spell than in the whole of South Africa's first innings. When you are committed on the front foot it's hard to pull out of the shot. The key to batting here is to play it late. Wait, wait and just wait. Stuart Broad hasn't done anything with the ball so he's been taken off. You need to do something with the new ball.

    South Africa lead by 152

Anderson does indeed bang one in to Amla and the South African doesn't seem too troubled and pulls for four, despite the best efforts of Mark Wood in the deep.

I'm not going to argue with England's all-time leading wicket taker but is that really his game? I'll just point out that there is only two slips to the new batsman.

It was a good catch by Joe Root. The crowd are on their feet and cheering and it has given England a bit of a lift after that batting display. That was a classic James Anderson dismissal. The batsman pushing at it, and a hint of away swing.

Hashim Amla is the big wicket here now - England will try to upset him with some of the short stuff. England should really try to bowl him out first, though.

    Kuhn c Root b Anderson 8 (SA 18-1)

England get the early wicket they desperately needed. Much like this morning (doesn't that seem a long time ago) it's classic Anderson getting a right hander caught at second slip with a little bit of movement.

The captain completes the catch. There's plenty of frustration in the celebration from both he and Jimmy.

  6. SA 18-1published at 6 overs

All credit to Anderson and Broad they're still beating the bat when they must want to sit in the corner and say to the batsmen "go on, you have a go".

Broad moves one away to Elgar and the South Africa wafts and misses.

Elgar should really be leaving those deliveries in all honesty.

Alex: Awful display from England. Need bowlers to dig them out (again), then produce an amazing batting performance, all so unlikely.

George Gray: Big lessons as a captain for Root to learn from here, brilliant batting, just inexperience as captain so far.

Derry Bannister: Awful performance, Stokes has been oddly average all Test while Dawson has to go. I have tickets for day four....

  8. SA 16-0published at 5 overs

    Kuhn 8 Elgar 4

The clouds have lifted and Jimmy is bowling the wobble seam deliveries suggesting he's looking for seam rather than swing.

That's a jaffa. Anderson gets one to nip off the pitch and beat the outside edge of Kuhn's bat.

The bowler looks to the heavens.

  9. Umpire review - Not outpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

Heino Kuhn is batting a long way out of his crease and he's hit just above the knee roll meaning the ball carries comfortably over the stumps.

England's reviews in this match have been shocking.

  10. Umpire reviewpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 15 July 2017

Anderson hits Kuhn on the pads. Decent appeal but the umpire says no. England take it upstairs. I can't say I am confident this one will be overturned.

Some better cricket going on behind the stand than when England batted.

Don't miss that, Dean. The opener plays right across his front pad as Broad bowls from around the wicket. Elgar picks up a couple though. Two hounds are facing a fox in the crowd. Have they given up on England?

The talk by Joe Root now has to be about bowling South Africa out for 150 odd. Even then the chase is 280 which they couldn't get near in the first innings. Full marks to South Africa who have outplayed England. The conditions may favour Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander but South Africa's batting has been better. You don't mind being beaten by the better team, but England won't be doing that. There were some shocking England dismissals.

Dean Elgar gets himself off the mark with a couple off Anderson. He'll be after a decent score after just six in the first innings and falling to a poor dismissal.

They were rubbish! Absolute tripe. They played a batsmen less and an extra spinner - and look it's the seamers doing the damage. There's players who got themselves in. Get a microphone out and take it round the public and ask them what they think about England's batting. In four hours they have lost the game. It's poor. Disappointing and disheartening if you are an England supporter.

Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad are bowling on the field but Geoffrey Boycott is coming in off his long run on England's batting...

  17. SA 5-0published at 2 overs

England have no time for moral victories in this terrible situation but Stuart Broad has just got one over Heino Kuhn.

The batsman gets a little giddy and goes hard at a full ball from the England bowler and only connects with fresh air.

Broad starts with a maiden but England need to find the edge every time on ones like that.

14 wickets have fallen today. How many more will we see this evening? The most recent was Chris Morris dismissing Mark Wood which brought an end to the England first innings.

Geoffrey Boycott is just about to come into the commentary box and talk about England's collapse.... Just to warn everyone it's going to get quite tasty in the next half hour. The rest of the team here might need some cotton wool for their ears. He has a red sweater on and his face will probably be the same colour at the end of his stint!

  20. SA 5-0published at 1 over

    South Africa lead by 135

Anderson straightens up his line for the rest of the over and Kuhn pays him the respect he deserves. He blocks four deliveries before pushing for a single into the covers.

Five from the first over. That'll settle the South African nerves.
