Anderson runs over to Bairstow and the two chuck their arms around each other as England wander off the field. Amla keeps his helmet on as he and Kuhn, who runs a frustrated hand through his hair, head off for some food.

  2. SA 12-1published at 4 overs

    Kuhn 4, Amla 6

A near run out as Hashim Amla drops the ball, takes off in a stilted sort of way and Westley's shy at the stumps misses. Broad responds with a tempter outside off that Kuhn swings at, and just about avoids edging onto his stumps. Kuhn tries a weird sort of cut, no real power behind it, the batsman caught in two minds, and Broad gives him a volley of advice. Kuhn survives, though, and that'll be lunch.

    Anderson 2-0-5-1

One of our 5 live colleagues, James Wickham, has asked if that's the first time someone has taken a Test wicket from their own end before. Anyone? Perfect again from Anderson, the ball seaming past the outside edge as Heino Kuhn presses forward. A stray onto the pads gives Kuhn something to work with though, as the batsman clips the ball off his pads and away through mid-wicket for four. Anderson, in response, squares him up, Kuhn throwing his body out of the way as Baistow takes the ball at chest height.

Anderson is getting ready to charge in from his own end again - here's how that first wicket fell.

  6. SA 7-1published at 2 overs

Amla holds his bat at hip level, moving into that crouched stance to flick Stuart Broad off his toes and pick up a couple. This is a much quieter over, although Broad is finding a bit of swing, getting the ball to move into Amla as he defends.

I still fancy England to win. If we get some rain, we could get a draw, but if we get enough overs in, I fancy England in a low-scoring game. We have had four pitches in this series that have given the bowlers a chance to get into the game. We've had a real contest between bat and ball.

  8. SA 3-1published at 1 over

Here's Hashim Amla, who was probably thinking about what he was going to have for lunch a few minutes ago. Amla gets off the mark sharpish, clipping off his hips for a single, before Kuhn wafts at a delivery that swings, and keeps on swinging. The final ball is played edgily and drops just short of Ben Stokes in the slips. What an opening over!

It's out, no need to bother looking back at the screen. It's a cracker. The beauty of cricket is that Elgar scored 100 in the last Test match and then 0 in this one. It doesn't half bring you back down to earth.

Elgar lbw Anderson 0 (SA 2-1)

OUT! What a start! That is sterling stuff from Anderson. It was the inswinger and Elgar played all around it. The ball thudded into his front pad and that's out. It's just out. Elgar looks briefly at his team-mate for support but Kuhn shakes his head. Don't bother, mate.

Ooh! Yorker from Anderson first up, Dean Elgar presses forward - and the ball just squeezes past the outside edge! It looked as though Elgar might have got a tickle on it and Bairstow couldn't cling on behind the stumps, but the replay shows it was just the bat hitting the ground. Two byes go zipping through Bairstow - can't be easy, having to come back out after being dismissed for 99 and then keeping, but that's the lot of a professional cricketer.

Jim Chapman: Take a bow, Jonny Bairstow! In the context of the match that was a world-class innings. Potentially match-winning!

Tim Spalding: One of the best and most absorbing innings I've seen in a long time. Incredible, Jonny Bairstow.

England huddle on the outfield as Dean Elgar and Heino Kuhn make their way to the middle. It'll be James Anderson to open the bowling from the James Anderson End, and he gets a huge cheer as it's announced over the tannoy.

England have ended their first innings on 362 all out. Here's how it ended, Bairstow trapped for 99. He's the first England batsman to fall for 99 since Kevin Pietersen was dismissed against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2010.

England haven't played great, but South Africa have bowled nicely. The odd ball is zipping around, but I'd say this is a par score. That's been the story of the series, the team batting first is getting that par score.

Bairstow's rescued what would have been a very disappointing morning for England. Moeen and Broad came and went and it was left to Bairstow to marshal the strike and stop Anderson from reverse sweeping his way back off the field.

Fantastic innings, wonderful. It did serious damage to the South Africa psychology. About 45 minutes ago, their opening batsmen were beginning to think about playing on this pitch, getting themselves mentally ready. Now they've had to stand on the boundary and see Bairstow whacking it all over the place.

There's an odd contrast between that Bairstow dismissal and the Moeen Ali hat-trick in the last Test. Then, the crowd waited for the review to confirm the joy they already knew. Here, there was hope, but not much of it. When the decision came, it was greeted by silence, followed by applause for a lovely knock.

Ignoring the dismissal, that was magnificent from Bairstow. The way he played with Anderson, keeping the runs ticking along and being utterly selfless in the way he played. He was helped by some genuinely awful captaincy from South Africa - the field placings were bizarre and Bairstow was given licence to manoeuvre the strike. Still, he's kept South Africa out there for longer than they'd have liked.
