    Bairstow 80, Anderson 0

Really lovely work from Bairstow, flicking his wrists on consecutive Rabada deliveries to send the ball either side of the wicket and add another couple to the total. The more you see of Bairstow now, the more infuriating that Broad dismissal is. If he could just have hung in there or a bit longer, not playing any big shots but following Bairstow's lead...

That hand speed from Bairstow - the bottom hand takes over and it's flat and powerful. He's such a dangerous player. Bairstow and Root always seem to score runs.

  3. Eng 330-9published at 104 overs

    Bairstow 71, Anderson 0

Shot! Bairstow gets a delivery onto his pads and he hoists it up and over the field for another four. Now Bairstow goes up and over and it just evades mid-on to go for another boundary! That looked close, given how aerially it went, but he split the field nicely. Plus he gave that such a crack that it would have stung the hands of the fielder. A quick single ensures the Yorkshireman keeps the strike. This is selfless stuff from Bairstow, knowing he needs to get as many runs as he can while shepherding Anderson around.

The drinks come out as the TMS crew tuck into a cake. No-one ever sends us cake. It's hugely upsetting. Morne, after a slurp of water, will resume.

There is rain around but South Africa can't think like that. If they end the day at 250-2, that will be a good day. Their goal will have to be to bat past England, get about 450, with a 120 run lead, and then try and bowl England out.

Broad was touted as an all-rounder, once upon a time. These days, not so much. Full from Rabada, and Bairstow drives it straight back past him for four! That made a real crack of noise as is left the bat. Anderson one again gets two balls to face, short leg lurking, but the first ball slides down the leg side in a rather nonthreatening manner. Anderson blocks the final ball, and gets a round of applause for his troubles as the drinks arrive.

Sports analysis: Sick and tired of Broad throwing away his wicket like a headless chicken with a set batsman at the other end. Selfish and stupid.

Nick Harris: Tired of Broad's predictable lack of desire to stick around at the crease for the cause, it's become almost apathetic

    Morkel 25-5-83-2

Bairstow sees off the first four ball of the over before taking a leisurely single to give Jimmy a bit more blocking practice. The Burnley Lara obliges, hoicking his bat and his hips out of the way as he avoids a Morkel short ball.

I support keeping Bairstow at 7, but it's a waste of talent if 8, 9 and 10 go for expansive drives against South Africa's quicks

As Steph said earlier, Jonny Bairstow is in danger of being stranded. Here he is making his way to his half-century.

Ironically, that chance that de Kock spilled is very similar to the sort of chances Bairstow dropped early on in his career. A low ball, the keeper moving to the side, and it was in and out of the gloves before de Kock knew what was going on. Bairstow steals a single from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.

De Kock has a guilty look on his face, he has spilled a genuine edge. It's his first proper drop, as he didn't go for that one off Root's edge yesterday.

Rabada's eyeing a five-for here. He'll not get it just yet, though - Quinton de Kock has dropped Bairstow! Dearie me. A bottom edge from Bairstow and de Kock, diving low to his right, got both hands to it, and promptly let it drop through.

This is actually pretty feeble from England, folding quickly and in danger of leaving Jonny Bairstow stranded. Bairstow is less than impressed with Stuart Broad's shot. Proper teapot on.

    Bairstow 53, Anderson 0

A near-standing ovation for local lad James Anderson, as he makes his way out. He'll take heart from that, given he's got three slips and a short leg right under his nose as Morkel steams in. Anderson solidly blocks his first ball, earning himself a round of applause in the process, before he promptly plays and misses at the final two balls.

That's a beauty - it was angled across and just nipped back. Broad was looking to cover drive something that was not there to be hit.

    Broad b Morkel 7 (Eng 312-9)

That's gorgeous from Morkel! A delivery that nipped back, completely beating Broad's attempted cover drive, and hitting the top of off stump to send the bails flying. Morne has a sardonic grin on his face. The ball before that, Broad had driven extravagantly at, and ended up sending a thick edge right between slip and gully that raced away for four.

    Rabada 23-7-74-4

Here's Stuart Broad. Talk about picking your fielders - he cracks the ball at spinner Keshav Maharaj, who was struggling with an injury yesterday, and as Maharaj heads off on a slightly stilted chase, Broad and Bairstow run three. There's a slight delay as Jonny Bairstow inside edges the ball into a very painful place, before he walks, rather than runs, to the other end.

It's a good catch but the smartest part of that cricket is that Rabada went back to bowling over the wicket.
