Peaky: If I were a neutral I would say the first day and a half of this Test has been the best Test cricket in a while.

Anderson takes four wickets from end bearing his name

Good bowling from Anderson, the ball cutting back and rising from back of a length. It has gone a bit flat at Old Trafford, I think this is the daily post-lunch lull, it will soon pick up.
Bavuma with his second scoring shot of the innings, steering it out past point for two. A huge appeal from Jimmy for an lbw, it nipped back but hit Kuhn pretty high on the pad. Root not interested in a review, doesn't even make eye contact with his bowler.

Outside the indoor centre is a red tent, where Dr Stuart is examining people for heart valve disease. Yesterday 62 people were checked and two told to see their GP as soon as possible. I got the check. I'm OK...
The tall figure of Toby Roland-Jones runs in with his long strides. An uneventful over with Kuhn dabbing and leaving. The second maiden of this innings.
England in search of their third wicket. How important will that extra batsman be for South Africa?

This is a good day to test a bowler - no zip, it looks pretty placid, Amla looks set and then you've snaffled him down the leg side.
Driven straight by Kuhn, Anderson gets down low, manages to get a hand on it but the South Africa pair run through for two. Bavuma plays an extravagant leave which is far too close to the ball.
Three from the over. Anderson's figures are 7-1-18-1.

Jonny Bairstow has got 100 today - that was his 100th dismissal as England wicketkeeper.
In comes Bavuma and he's off the mark courtesy of a thick edge for four. The dream start to Toby Roland-Jones' Test career continues.
I must say, I enjoyed Tuffers' gag (14:10 entry) ... I have one, about a herb and a fish. But this isn't the thyme or the plaice.

Amla looked in a hungry mood, just like England have seen him in the past. You don't bowl for those. That was a poor ball, just tickling down the leg side, and it should have ended up at the boundary. Toby Roland-Jones is having the start to Test cricket that you dream of.
Amla c Bairstow b Roland-Jones 30 (SA 47-2)
England make their first bowling change of the match and Toby Roland-Jones strikes. A poor shot from Amla. TBJ goes too far down leg and Amla easily clips it off the pads for four, Toby does it again, in what is a worse ball, and Amla guides it straight into the hands of Bairstow.

A false start from Anderson as he pulls out of his run up. I saw him do that at Old Trafford in the Roses County Championship match earlier this season, where he ended up injuring his groin. No such damage here though, fear not.
A better over from Jimmy, adding some pressure on Kuhn, who bottom edges one onto the turf and then looks awkward playing at a ball that keeps low outside off.

The crowd have got into that slightly restless mode, where the cricket hasn't quite gripped them. There's an enormous beer snake being held aloft at the back of one of the stands.
A sweet straight drive from Amla finds the boundary rope (or foam), as Broad overpitches. Root brings in an extra cover and this time Amla plays off his toes and finds the gap. Back-to-back boundaries.
We've spoken about the importance of Jennings reaching a big score in this match, the same can be said for Kuhn. He has scores of 1, 9, 34, 8, 15 and 11 so far, and an unbeaten 14 in this innings.

I'm not sure what's happened. It's gone a bit flat out there for England. They were full of buzz before lunch.
Kuhn 14, Amla 16
There doesn't seem to be the same swing as there was before lunch, as Anderson continues from his own End. He does get one to nip in to Kuhn, who lets it go by and then engages in some nervous-looking gardening. There are shouts of 'catch it' as Kuhn plays one up in the air through point but it goes wide of the fielder.

Amla is not the player from two years ago. He used to get out to the ball and he's stopped doing that. He'll get some runs because he was once was a top class player but he's not the force he was.
We saw the 100m heats at the Athletic World Champs last night, and Jonny Bairstow may have taken some inspiration from it. Amla edges wide of the slip cordon and the England keeper outruns his team-mates and sprints to the wide third man boundary, saving a run in the process.
Kuhn with another thick edge, adds four more to the South Africa total.
The beauty of fancy dress at the cricket is that it gives us lots to talk about. The chaps dressed as post boxes have been the talk of the day. They are sipping their refreshments through the gap. There will be some soggy letters at close of play.

Hashim Amla is looking a bit ominious here. He's not been in the runs this series. You sense he's got a few in the locker.
Anderson, bowling wide of the wicket, angles the ball in to Amla, who is happy to leave the first two then bisects the field with a cover drive for four. A controlled slice. Amla, now on the back foot, pierces the field in the same region, but this time it's only three.
Seven from the over, Anderson looks a bit grumpy.
